Bruce Schneier explains why the Witty
Worm is a scary piece of malware
06/08/2004 05:02 PMBruce Schneier of Counterpane
Security explains why the Witty Worm is so awful.
Witty was very well written. It was less
than 700 bytes long. It used a random-number generator to spread
itself, avoiding many of the problems that plagued previous worms. It
spread by sending itself to random IP addresses with random
destination ports, a trick that made it easier to sneak through
firewalls. It was -- and this is a very big deal -- bug-free. This
strongly implies that the worm was tested before release.
Witty was exceptionally nasty. It was the first
widespread worm that destroyed the hosts it infected. And it did so
cleverly. Its malicious payload, erasing data on random accessible
drives in random 64KB chunks, caused immediate damage without
significantly slowing the worm's spread.

Booble Explains Meaning Of Parody To
Google Lawyers
01/28/2004 03:38 PMAs we
predict
ed last week when the so-called "porn search engine" Booble
launched last week, it didn't take long for Google's lawyers to swing
into action and insist that Booble hand over the domain. Booble has
the full letter on their
site, and with it, their response, explaining to Google's lawyers
the meaning (and legal protections) associated with a parody. They
also knock Google for suggesting that Booble somehow "tarnishes"
Google's image, but does it in a way you might not expect: "Entering
the terms "porn" and "sex" in the Google search engine return
98,400,000 hits and 269,000,000 hits, respectively, while entering
these same terms in the Booble adult search engine return 268 hits and
291 hits, respectively. Therefore, the Google mark - which has a
longstanding association with pornographic terms and material - is
obviously not tarnished." Also, Booble appears to have edited their
"we're not Google" disclaimer to add: "(for starters, we have a sense
of humor)."

Family Of Man Who Came Up With Googol
Demanding A Piece Of Google
05/16/2004 04:34 PMStunning. Someone should write a book about the amazing things people
(who don't work at Google) have done in their attempts to cash in on
the insane amount of greed that seems to grip people when it comes to
the upcoming Google IPO. There's already been a scam of someone
selling
fake pre-IPO Google shares who convinced a number of Wall Street
insiders and big company execs to shell out. Now, however, we have
the descendants of the man who came up with the term "googol" (on
which Google
based their
name) claiming that
Google is
unfairly profiting off of their intellectual property. No,
seriously. They haven't yet taken legal action, but are trying to
persuade Google that they deserve pre-IPO shares in the company. They
make it out as if this is them being
nice - and suggesting that
it's Google's
ethical obligation to give them shares, or they
may need to sue. It shouldn't be at all surprising to find out that
the descendant leading this charge is a Silicon Valley "compensation
specialist." She complains that she wrote the company in 1988 (I
assume this is a typo, as the company was founded in 1998) and they
didn't write back - which she attributes to them either being busy or
arrogant. I think it's fair to attribute this latest move by
this family to
greed.
