The National Institute on Aging (NIA), one of the 27 Institutes and Centers of the National Institutes of Health, leads a broad scientific effort to understand the nature of aging and to extend the healthy, active years of life. In 1974, Congress granted authority to form the National Institute on Aging to provide leadership in aging research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs relevant to aging and older people. Subsequent amendments to this legislation designated the NIA as the primary Federal agency on Alzheimer’s disease research. NIA sponsors research on aging through extramural and intramural programs. The extramural program funds research and training at universities, hospitals, medical centers, and other public and private organizations nationwide. The intramural program conducts basic and clinical research in Baltimore, MD and on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. This has been added to Elder Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

USGS National Map Viewer 12/25/2003 12:48 AM
If Mapquest just isn't cutting the mustard, or you feel compelled over the holidays to take your geekery to new and mysterious depths, the National Map Viewer from the U.S. Geological Survey is your new best friend. The dynamic interface lets you layer roads, topos, and satellite imagery on top of one another at your whim. And if you're really hardcore, make your own app by downloading and mining the Census Bureau's TIGE R database.
Note: Map viewer and interface may not be friendly to all browsers; this is a common limitation of government websites.

Dutch National Archives

Dutch National Archives 04/14/2004 01:08 PM

500,000 pictures taken between 1880 and 1990 are now in a searchable Dutch National Archive Image Bank. If you speak enough Dutch to navigate the site, there's quite a lot of history here. It looks like current Dutch copyright laws are similar to the US, lasting until a creator's death + 70 years, so it's tough to tell how much of the archive is free for reuse. Still, it's cool to see another country take their archives online for everyone to see. [thanks prolific]
