Microsoft aims to lead smartphone market
within three years
06/24/2005 07:25 PM
The chief of Microsoft's mobile and embedded division is promising something that seems counterintuitive: a complex suite of features in a smart phone that's cheap and easy to use and in so doing take the lead in the smartphone market within three years. To date, Microsoft is well known for delivering on the first item, but not necessarily the second two, which is why some users have shunned Microsoft's mobile version of Windows and preferred operating systems from the likes of PalmSource Inc. and Symbian Ltd.

Lite-On IT aims for 10-15% of the global
DVD recorder market
07/30/2004 05:16 AM
Lite-On IT expects to claim 10%-15% of the global market for DVD recorders in 2005, up from an estimated 8.3% this year, company president Danny Liao indicated. Lite-On IT has been developing DVD recorder technology since 2000, and the company is optimistic about the market since DVD recorders, unlike DVD players, have a high technology threshold, preventing low-priced competition from China, Liao pointed out.

Lite-On IT DVD recorders are sold in the retail channel in the US and Europe. The number of Costco outlets selling the company’s DVD recorders in the US has grown from six to about 400. The company’s Europe channel includes Dixons in the UK and Casino in France, Liao noted. In addition, Lite-On IT is making efforts to secure OEM/ODM orders from international brands, Liao added.

ABIT Aims to Redefine Mainboard Market 08/10/2004 06:40 AM
ABIT, one of the leading makers of mainboards aimed at hardware enthusiasts, overclockers and gamers, said Monday it would launch a new series of mainboards that would change the way people treat mainboards later during the week. One of the world’s top manufacturer of mainboards and graphics cards is pretty tight-lipped on its new lineup of products named after a famous gamer. What is known about the new Fatal1ty series is that the mainboard company did its best to offer an ultimate platform solution for gamers.

“We do not disclose much information about the new Fatal1ty family of mainboards, but based on the obtainable information I can assume that the Fatal1ty mainboards will be totally different from what you expect from ABIT or any other makers around,” an ABIT’s spokesperson told X-bit labs. ABIT’s officials declined to comment about peculiarities of Fatal1ty mainboards, but said the new series will differ by design and feature-set from currently available high-end offerings.

year
07/07/2004 09:40 AM
Microsoft Corp. customers have heard the vendor profess that its software allows them to "do more with less," but now it's Microsoft employees' turn: The company is cutting back on benefits. Microsoft plans to save nearly US$1 billion through efficiency improvements and cost-cutting in its 2005 fiscal year, Microsoft Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Steve Ballmer said in his annual strategy e-mail message to employees on Tuesday. The company's new fiscal year started on July 1. Over the past three years, expenses at Microsoft have grown faster than revenue. "This is obviously not a trend we can continue," Ballmer wrote. The company's plan to save money includes better coordinated marketing, which should save hundreds of millions of dollars, according to Ballmer.
