George Santayana wrote in 1905, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Nearly 100 years later, independent software vendors should heed his aphorism. Too many ISVs create software as though it will exist in a vacuum, humming along doing its thing without the need to interface with other enterprise applications. It was this type of thinking that created the enterprise application integration industry.

Helping Users Protect Themselves

Helping Users Protect Themselves 07/25/2004 08:43 PM

Some soundbites rom The weakest security link?  It's you, a recent News.com article:

People are the weakest link.

Education is the first line of defense.

People are still not thinking before opening an (e-mail) attachment.

The big problem with educating employees on security issues is being able to track whether you're getting through to people.

Everyone knows about viruses, for example, but half the people don't have antivirus software.

While I agree that people are the weakest security link and even the world's strongest lock is useless if not used, I don't think that training employees about security and tracking security policy compliance is enough to fix the problem.

What's the missing ingredient?

Helping users protect themselves.

Just as training drivers all about driving hazards is useless if the driver is a blind, users can't protect themselves if they are not fully aware of what is going on around them.  Was there any suspicoius activities involving my account since last time I signed-in?  Is there someone accessing my online bank account at the same time I am?

If a hacker broke into your computer remotely and used it to send phishing e-mails or spams, how would you know?  Unexpected blinking network connection lights?  Something is wrong when it's easier to keep track of friends logging into their computers than strangers logging into our computers.

Unfortunately, most designers of today's security products see the user only as an input device: I'll give you access to these if you give me this and that.  This mindset encourages people to be more concerned about lossing access than gaining protection.  This is why people reuse passwords and write them down in easy to find places.

Security companies need to start thinking more about helping users protect themselves by providing more information about what is going on and letting them play an active role in security.  If something suspicious is going on, don't let the information sit until probability crosses some security policy thresholds.  Inform the user rightaway.  Remember that, to the user, no news is good news so they'll think what they are doing is all right unless they are warned away from dangerous edges.

There are ways to inform the user without getting in their way too much or making them paranoid.  For example, if an e-mail message has executable or unknown file attachements, mark it visibly as potentionally dangerous.  Hyperlinks should always clearly present the destination URL to the user instead of hiding it behind a possibly bogus text.

Thanks For Helping Fix Our Software --
We Won't Sue You This Time
04/06/2005 09:36 PM
A security company discovered some vulnerabilities in some Sybase code a couple weeks ago and handed them over to the company -- who did a good job of patching the problem relatively quickly. Then, things started to get messy, as the security company got ready to explain what the vulnerabilities were, leading Sybase to threaten to sue them. That's some thank you for finding the security hole. After a public backlash, Sybase has called off its legal dogs and issued an odd announcement "thanking" the company they were thinking about suing just a day before. It's amazing that this sort of thing keeps coming up. While this case had a bit of a twist, in that the bug was already patched, it's still all about a company trying to hide where its vulnerabilities are, rather than owning up to them. Security holes happen. Everyone knows that. The real question is how a company deals with them -- and that goes beyond just how quickly they patch the holes, but how they treat those who are helping them fix their software by finding the holes in the first place.

EFF helping produce anonymizing software

EFF helping produce anonymizing software 12/27/2004 10:38 AM
Cory Doctorow: I have the coolest job: my employer, EFF, is now officially doing development on Tor, an anonymizing network tool that lets people use the Internet without being snooped upon:
Your traffic is safer when you use Tor, because communications are bounced around a distributed network of servers, called onion routers. Instead of taking a direct route from source to destination, data packets on the Tor network take a random pathway through several servers that cover your tracks so no observer at any single point can tell where the data came from or where it's going. This makes it hard for recipients, observers, and even the onion routers themselves to figure out who and where you are. Tor's technology aims to provide Internet users with protection against "traffic analysis," a form of network surveillance that threatens personal anonymity and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security.

Traffic analysis is used every day by companies, governments, and individuals that want to keep track of where people and organizations go and what they do on the Internet. Instead of looking at the content of your communications, traffic analysis tracks where your data goes and when, as well as how big it is. For example, online advertising company Doubleclick uses traffic analysis to record what web pages you've visited, and can build a profile of your interests from that. A pharmaceutical company could use traffic analysis to monitor when the research wing of a competitor visits its website, and track what pages or products that interest the competitor. IBM hosts a searchable patent index, and it could keep a list of every query your company makes. A stalker could use traffic analysis to learn whether you're in a certain Internet cafe.

Donations to EFF are tax-deductible -- you've got a week left to knock some bucks off your tax bill and do some good for the whole Internet! Link

Tell me again how Bush's War on Iraq is

Tell me again how Bush's War on Iraq is
helping the war on terrorism?
04/09/2004 04:01 PM
AP reported today: The Abdel-Aziz al-Samarrai mosque was hit by U.S. aircraft that launched a Hellfire missile at its minaret and dropped a 500-pound bomb on a wall surrounding the compound. The U.S. military said insurgents were using the mosque for a military fire base. Iraqi witnesses estimated 40 people were killed as they gathered for afternoon prayers. I wonder what this is going to look like on the TV screens on houses throughout the Middle East, as Al-Jazeera sends the images out of the Christian Crusader occupation troops in Iraq bombing mosques and killing worshippers. Just imagine what the reaction would be if Americans saw TV coverage of Canadian Baptist churches being bombed by the Saudi air force. I assume that the American military is correct, and that Iraqi resistance members were using the mosque for a military fire base. It doesn't matter. The so-called war on terrorism is in large part a war for hearts and minds, and with images like this being engraved upon the hearts and minds of Arab youth, we are losing that war, as everyone who knew anything about the area (including Bush senior) predicted would happen if we occupied Iraq. And more people, including American boys and girls in uniform, continue to die for Bush's lies. AP says: Since Sunday, 35 Americans, two other coalition soldiers and more than 230 Iraqis have been killed in fighting. The Iraqi figure did not include those killed at the mosque. Since the war began, at least 630 U.S. service members have died. Update 2 hours later: With a little bit of searching, you can see what the Arab world is seeing, such as this series (warning: extremely graphic) of what they describe as the pictures of Iraqi children killed in the siege of Falluja....

Mostly on hiatus until November 2,
helping Get Out The Vote
12/17/2004 06:40 PM
I have taken a temporary position as a project manager for a small company that sponsored some innovative open-source software that I worked on a bit as a volunteer. The company contracts with a number of large partisan and non-partisan membership organizations to host (and adapt the software they've built) for the organizations' Get Out The Vote efforts between now and November 2. Talk about a fixed deadline. It's crazed, and it pays considerably less than I made starting as a software project manager 15 years ago, but it is work of the heart, well worth doing. It is too late to do much about the voting machines this election cycle, but at least we can try and get everybody out to vote. I've lived in several countries where governments were not chosen by elections, and I take our right to elect our representatives very seriously, and hope you will to. If you need an emotional demonstration of the reason to vote, click the graphic at the right and watch the powerful short movie. It is our country, and we get to decide who its leaders are. I don't care if you agree with my political opinions or if you think that George Bush is the greatest thing since sliced bologna. Please exercise your right and duty to educate yourself on the issues and candidates and to vote on November 2. As you might guess, I'll be working a bit more than 40 hours a week between now and November 2, averaging about 16 hours a day so far this week, so I suspect I won't be doing much writing here, or reading blogs elsewhere, although I may post the odd comment here or there. I hope to see you at the polls on November 2....
