How Men Are Awesome

Zero Sum/Guerilla Research has some interesting bluetooth statistics (Wait! Come back!) from a survey of 1500 individuals in one of London's central business districts:68% of personalised devices were given 'male' names, with only 20% allocated a 'female' name. Although mobile phone ownership is higher for men than women in the...

Interesting... This neat little program claims it can guess the author's sex by the distribution of words in text. At least it guessed my sex correctly, but it did make the grave mistake of thinking that one of the people on my blogroll (right) is a male, even though I'm pretty sure she's a lady :).

Hooray for stereotypes.

Cygwin: Still Awesome

Cygwin: Still Awesome 09/08/2004 10:51 AM

I opined a few months ago on the beauty and joy of the command line, but I had another experience today that really illustrated the fact that GUI’s aren’t the best tool for everything.

I have both the privilege and burden of dealing with Rational Clearcase for some version control tasks. I recently wrote a large module with a number of new files, and it was time to add it to source control. Clearcase’s GUI has no ‘recursively add all these files’ function, which is one of the many ways in which it strives to suck, and succeeds beyond expectations.

Fortunately, I’ve got Cygwin on my Windows box. First up: get a list of files to check in. I want only my module, and not any of the Frontpage crap that Visual Studio adds to web projects. So, I need a list of all the files in the project, then get rid of any of them that are not in my module’s folder, then get rid of any directories that start with an underscore (the frontpage crap), then save that list to a file.

find . | grep /MyModule | sed /\/_[a-z]/d > list.txt

(Yes, there are plenty of more efficient ways to write this, but it was the first way that came to mind, and it works.)

Now I need to take each of those items and check it in to ClearCase one by one. (Clearcase has an import commandline command that would take them all at once, but I don’t have permission to run it in my environment). No sweat with bash.

for file in `cat list.txt`; do cleartool mkelem $file; done

Awesome. Two commands instead of an hour’s worth of clicking, saving me so much time that I waste it on things like posting to blogs while I wait for the checkin to finish.

You need Cygwin if you are a serious power user of any kind. Learning it will not only make you faster, it will make you more platform independent. Almost all non-Windows platforms that you run across use some variation of this syntax.

Windows takes on multiple roles 07/22/2004 11:08 AM
As IT Week revealed recently, Microsoft is working to make Windows run Linux software, and not before time. Windows and Linux would be much more useful platforms if they could each run software originally written for the other.

Now let's talk about Longhorn. Longhorn is the codename for the next version of Windows, currently slated for delivery in 2008. Though Microsoft has mentioned the possibility of a 3D graphical user interface, and a new database-like file-system, it has actually made no promises about what will be included in Longhorn. Many people note that 2008 is so far away that without an excellent crystal ball, nobody could predict what the update will contain. But one thing I reckon for certain about Longhorn is that it will be able to run Linux software.

Exploring New Roles for Community Technology Centers: Can CTCs Serve as Nonprofit Technical Assistance Providers?
http://www.compumentor.org /ctcstudy/

CompuMentor Report Examines the Capacity of CTCs to Provide Technology Assistance to Nonprofits. Over the past several years, much discussion has taken place in the nonprofit sector and particularly in the community technology movement around the evolving roles of community technology centers (CTC). One idea that has received significant attention is whether CTCs may expand their roles to act as nonprofit technology assistance providers (NTAPs).

With the support of the AOL Time Warner Foundation, CompuMentor took a closer look at this issue and published its findings in the report "Exploring New Roles for Community Technology Centers: Can CTCs Serve as Nonprofit Technical Assistance Providers?" CompuMentor's interest in this subject came from two vantage points. First, as an NTAP we understand there is a very large unmet need in the nonprofit sector for technology support services. Second, as a provider or services and technical assistance to CTCs, we know that sustainability is a huge challenge.

The key findings of the report, conducted by Rem Hoffmann, include:

* Although CTCs are perceived as tech-savvy organizations, they may not have the capacity to function as NTAPs.

* Technology skills are only one of five categories of qualifications necessary to serve as an NTAP. Others are mission congruency, business capabilities, the ability to subsidize the cost of providing service, and position in the community. While a number of CTCs meet some of these qualifications, very few meet all or most of them.

* NTAPs reported that fundraising to subsidize the cost of providing services was critical to succeeding. The report found that it costs much more to provide these services than nonprofits are able to pay, which directly contrasts the perception that CTCs acting as NTAPs can generate earned income to support their other programs.

There appears to be a small subset of CTCs that can offer NTAP services. The paper concludes with a recommendation to conduct further research of new models for NTAPs and CTCs to partner to deliver services to community-based organizations.
