Email Personality Checker

Email Personality Checker 11/03/2003 03:36 PM
I use Eudora as my email client which has the amusing (if mostly useless) feature of noticing if I'm using any bad words, and warning me that I might be "flaming" someone (it also notes if incoming mail appears to be burning hot as well). Basically, if you put in a curse, it notices it. This is a slightly different take on the ever-popular spell-checker and grammar-checker offerings. We've already seen some other variations on the technology, such as the "Bullfi ghter" application that would help you cut buzzwords out of your documents. Now, however, a researcher in the UK is apparently working on something of a "personality checker" for your email. You first indicate what sort of personality you want to display ("why, I'm sort of morbid today, let's make my emails dark") and then it will watch what you write and suggest alternatives to more properly convey the proper tone. Consider it your very own personality coach. Apparently, we feel the need to automate even our own personality these days. Since studies have shown that spell checkers make good spellers worse, does that mean this new tool will give us less personality?

Does Your Software Need A Personality
Test?
11/12/2003 01:35 PM
There are all different theories in designing software, but I've never heard of trying to give an application the famous Myers-Briggs personality test to design its user interface. However, that's what an anti-spam software company has done. They looked over the various Myers-Briggs personality profiles to find the personality that most matched "spam stopping" and chose "ESTJ" or the "Guardian Supervisor", and then made user interface choices based on what sort of person that was likely to portray. It's certainly a different approach, and it will be interesting to see how effective (if at all) it is. It sounds like some of the design choices they made (e.g., no help menu) may sound good on paper, but will confuse users (no matter what their personality type) who are just used to applications working in a specific way. Users expect a certain comfort level, even in new applications, so that the learning curve isn't too much of a hurdle for them to deal with.

Windows types and universal types

Windows types and universal types 11/03/2003 08:59 AM
Dare Obasanjo differentiates the WinFS data model from the structures definable in W3C XML Schema as follows:
The WinFS schema language and W3C XML Schema do two fundamentally different things; W3C XML Schema is a way for describing the structure and contents of an XML document while a WinFS schema describes types and relationships of items stored in WinFS. [Dare Obasanjo]
As I see it, there are two major classes of XSD-governed XML documents. Both are well-supported by Microsoft and by other players. First, in the realm of Web services, we have SOAP messages wrapped in WSDL interfaces. Over the past two years, thanks in large part to Microsoft efforts which I've lauded, there's been a shift from an RPC-oriented style of SOAP messaging to the document-oriented style that better suits the coarse-grained, asynchronous, message-driven architectural pattern. XSD is how we define the datatypes and structures in those messages. ...

Body types

Body types 08/16/2004 08:19 PM

Back when I used to compete in some bike events as a teen, I remember that the sport tended to favor shorter than average men, and even at the local level, the majority of top guys fell into a pretty small range of body size and type. At the state and national level, the distribution was even smaller, with almost every competitor being about 5' 6".

It's kind of fun to watch the olympics and notice that on a global stage, the distributions seem to fall the same way, with each sport favoring a certain body type and seemingly 90% or more of the contestants looking just about the same. The women's beach volleyball is where it seems most obvious. You see tall, thin, tan women that look as if they all just stepped off a beach in Southern California. Then you see that they're from China, or Japan, or Switzerland, as well as the US. Men's and Women's gymnastics, swimming, and diving all seem to favor a pretty narrow body type as well. Anyone that's ever watched college women's softball knows there's a body type for that sport as well, and it's also easy to see the teams around the world fall into it.

Every sport favors genetics to some extent, but I've always discounted them and held that anyone of any shape could rise towards the top if they trained hard enough. But at the absolute upper reaches of a sport, falling outside the norm becomes a liability and when the margin of error grows thin, you're going to fall behind the best.

I've always been an idealist that believed anyone could become president of the US, a pro baseball player, or the next Bill Gates, but when it comes to global competitve sports, it seems like winning the genetic lottery is almost always required if you really want to be the absolute best.

Two types of features

Two types of features 07/03/2004 03:24 PM

At every WWDC, with each OS upgrade, Apple offers two new types of features to developers.

I’ll use last year’s WWDC as an example (since I can’t talk about this year’s WWDC).

One one hand there are features like SearchKit, which make it easy to add searching to your application. This is an example of an on-the-side feature. You can add it to your application, but it doesn’t affect much of the main body of your code. It doesn’t fundamentally change how you write Cocoa apps.

The best thing about features like this is that I can use them and just have them not show up if you’re using an older OS (Jaguar).

On the other hand there are new features that change how you write apps. Cocoa bindings is an example. This technology allows you to do delete a bunch of user interface code: it makes it easier to bind your user interface to your data and preferences. But this technology goes to the heart of your application. There’s no putting it on the side (as with searching).

So at WWDC I found myself looking at each feature and figuring out if it’s an on-the-side or in-the-heart-of-the-app feature. While I’m grateful for all the cool on-the-side features I can use, I look at the in-the-heart features and dream about them. Someday...

The common wisdom is that you support the current operating system minus one. Right now that means Panther and Jaguar. When Tiger ships, it will be Tiger and Panther.

But what that means is that two years after learning about Cocoa bindings I’d finally be able to use the technology.

So what I wonder is, is the common wisdom wrong? Given all the major new technologies in each OS release, would another rule—a six-month rule, perhaps—make more sense? (Support the current OS plus whatever was current six months ago.)

The obvious benefit is better software. The drawback is that there are people still using operating systems more than six months old.

I’m just thinking out loud here. Feedback is welcome.
