Brain Rewards Us for Laughing: Study By Merritt McKinney

Researchers report that humor seems to activate brain networks that are involved in rewards. Humor is no laughing matter, according to Dr. Allan L. Reiss of Stanford University in California, who led the research. "Humor has significant ramifications for our psychological and physical health," he told Reuters Health. Our sense of humor, he said, "often dictates if, how and with whom we establish friendships and even long-lasting romantic relationships." Humor is also a "universal coping mechanism" for dealing with stress, Reiss added.

‘Tis the season to cash in those rebates

‘Tis the season to cash in those rebates 12/27/2004 03:21 PM
As the dust begins to settle on all the shiny new gadgets purchased this holiday season, the time has come to dig out the paperwork and apply for one of the many rebates being offered by more and more companies to lure customers to their products. The use of rebates is at an all-time high, especially when it comes to computer and consumer electronics purchases, finds The NPD Group's recent report, Rebates: A Consumer Perspective. Almost a third of consumers surveyed (32 percent) purchased a technology product that offered a rebate during the past six months. A closer look at those consumers' responses shows more than 25 percent of computer hardware product purchases included a rebate and 8.5 percent of respondents used a rebate to buy a consumer electronics product. The clear benefit of rebates in consumers' minds is the price reduction offered. More than half of those surveyed said rebates "made the product more affordable than expected." Rebates also spurred consumers to buy products sooner than they expected (21 percent), to buy more expensive products than they would have without a rebate offer (17 percent) and to purchase brands they would not have without a rebate offer (9 percent). While rebates are very popular, the NPD study indicates the redemption process is still a source of frustration for many consumers. The most common reason for dissatisfaction was "prefer instant cash" (35 percent). Another 25 percent said rebates are "too much work for the money" and 17 percent said they forgot to mail in or go online to redeem their rebates before the expiration deadlines. Additionally, 15 percent said it was difficult to know what to do to redeem rebates and 13 percent said they didn't have enough time to complete and submit the forms necessary to redeem their rebates.

Picking a horse for this big race

Picking a horse for this big race 01/27/2004 04:45 AM

I've spent the past couple months reviewing all the presidental candidates, looking for the one with the right combination of passion, hope, and a plan for our future. I've taken a long look at Dean, Clark, and Edwards, but they don't quite hit the mark for me personally.

After months of research, reading their issue statements online, and watching a good deal of CSPAN, I've finally come up with my pick for the next president of the United States in 2004:

Ronnie James Dio

There are dozens of good reasons, but to sum up: Dio's tough on the issues, isn't afraid to speak his mind, still knows how to rock after all these years, can shake the "angry guy" image pretty easily, and overall I think the next four years will kick so much ass with Dio in charge that he's my pick in '04.

I urge New Hampshire voters that might still be on the fence to think about Dio, if not for me, not for yourself, but for America. Go Dio Go!!!

The Unix Horse Race

The Unix Horse Race 06/17/2005 04:38 PM

The big OpenSolaris launch is today; there’s a huge crowd of bloggers giving you the deep technical poop, so I’ll stick to sports metaphors. I don’t know what the word “Unix” means legally, but if it’s got a real fork(), it’s Unix to me; that includes GNU/Linux and the BSDs and Solaris. Which is to say, they’re more alike than they are different, and they’re all pretty good. Nobody cares much about the history now; it’s about fast, reliable, and cheap, and that’s as it should be. If you look at the core engineering teams for Linux and Solaris, neither of them is dramatically bigger than the other, so I think the race is pretty fair. My personal take? At the moment Solaris is ahead in scaling and observability and production management. The good Linux distros are ahead in installing and packaging (“In the Beginning there was nothing. So God said apt-get install light”) and user interface. Is there a downside? The BSDs might get crowded out in all the excitement, and that would be sad. Aside from that, it’s gonna be fun to watch. And the people who are lined up to bet are waving real money, lots of it.

The Horse Race Syndrome

The Horse Race Syndrome 01/17/2004 10:47 PM
Some day, we could just cover the issues. Nah, that would take away our role as arbiters, and we couldn't allow that to happen, right?

Retailers' love affair with mail-in rebates may be coming to an end. In response to customer complaints, Best Buy Co. Inc., the world's largest electronics retailer, promised Friday to eliminate mail-in rebates within two years. Best Buy's rivals, including Circuit City Stores and CompUSA, are expected to follow suit.

"Our customers are telling us they just hate the process," said Ron Boire, executive vice president and general merchandise manager at Best Buy. But it wasn't immediately clear Friday whether Best Buy would pass on the eliminated rebates in the form of lower prices, though several industry watchers said they expect the company to do so.
