Interview with Craig from Craigslist
08/27/2004 01:34 PM
I blogged earlier about the sale of 25%
of the stock of Craigslist to eBay. Out of context, some people might
not understand why this requires explaining or someone with a casual
understanding might think Craig sold out. Here's some more context.
(And no, Craig has not "sold out".)
Craig is a very unique individual and this interview and his site are a testament to
that. In March, on the way to SXSW, I was with a group which had an
airline nightmare at SFO. Craig negotiated with the extremely
unhelpful Mesa Airlines for the whole group of us and was amazingly
effective. I was moved by how he insisted that we were a group and was
not willing to settle for anything that left anyone
behind.

Craig of Craigslist interview
Wired Magazine ran an interview this month with Craig Newmark, the
founder of Craigslist and an all-round mensch:
Google's touchy-feely corporate mantra is "Don't be evil."
What's yours?
Give people a break.
A break from what?
A break from how difficult our lives are. It's like, if you're
walking out of your apartment building and somebody is coming the
other way with an armful of groceries, you hold the door. It feels
good - it's the neighborly thing to do. And our species survives by
cooperating.
What poses the major threat to that survival?
Kleptocrats and sociopathic organizations that have the almighty
dollar as their only goal.

newspapers are getting trounced by online classifieds. The most
dramatic change is not merely that readers and advertisers prefer the
online medium, but that newspapers have abdicated control over

social networking
Hey, there's a lot of buzz about "social networking", software and
sites that connect people for purposes including dating.
Friendster is the best example, though it's easy to question if it
creates a real atmosphere of intimacy. I just don't know; I have a
network of over a million people, without trying at all. With some
"first mover" advantage, they have a good shot at survival.
The Chronicle talks about buzznet, which is a photo blogging
community, just starting, which really seems to connect people.
Maybe any real social networking success will come from sites where
people are doing it primarily from passion, just trying to pay the
bills, who knows?
I'm beginning to feel that success requires organic growth over a
period of years.
I should add that I know these guys, worked with them a long time
ago, '95, and feel that they really do have good motivations.
The Chron article, really good, is here.

Commentary from CEDX's Craig Plunkett
01/22/2004 02:13 AMCraig Plunkett responds to the Edge Consult hotspot report: In a trial
of introducing more voices to Wi-Fi Networking News, we're publishing
a response to our recent coverage of the Edge Consult report on Wi-Fi
from Craig Plunkett. Craig is the founder and head of CEDX
Corporation, a network services and installation firm that has also
rolled out hotspots in the Manhattan and New York area. Craig writes:
It would be interesting to see who commissioned the Edge Consult
report. Sounds like a European GSM carrier that doesn't have a Wi-Fi
strategy. With only having access to the report's table of contents, I
think their conclusions are way off base. The Cellular carriers still
have to provide backhaul, and for that, RBOCs [regional Bell operating
carriers, or the Baby Bells] and MSOs [cable multi-system operators]
rule in the U.S. I don't know about Europe; that's probably still the
PTTs [state-owned phone monopolies]. Plus, venues that have cell
towers that carry massive voice volume receive big-time rents for
these, on the order of US$10,000/month/carrier if you have a location
on a major highway. Will venue owners expect this level of
compensation for carrier hotspots? You obviously have to deploy more
hotspots in different locations than the cell antennas are currently
located, so you can't leverage the existing real estate, T-1s or fiber
to towers, unless you use 3G backhaul from the hotspot, and we know
that story. The report also seems very Eurocentric. As far as the fee
or free model, it's not an actual study if it uses made-up data! I can
do a study, too, that says fee-based profits are higher than free and
publish it if I make up my own numbers. I don't really mind the
conclusion of the report, because it discourages competition from
other fee-based providers. Hey, the market's going to do what it
wants, whatever my opinion is, but let's not have made up numbers
sound like facts. What needs to be done is to get a hold of some
numbers from a chain under the same brand where access is free in some
locations, paid in some, and there's no access in others, all in the
same geographical area. You also need to collect data from the users
of the spots, on whether they're here just for the Wi-Fi, whether
they'd pay for it or not, and at the places with no coverage,...

Sesame Street's greatest moments
Sesame Street's greatest moments
04/07/2005 09:52 AMCory Doctorow:
25 Of My Favorite Sesame Street Memories is a lovely, lavishly
illustrated essay that's pretty much what is says on the label:
wistful funny essays about 25 great moments in Sesame Street history.
Guy Smiley has a huge & rather odd resume. Among the shows he's hosted
are one in which a baby has to pick out its grandmother among an old
lady and a mustachioed man & dog with wigs on, one in which all the
correct answers are "Triangle," & the "Here Is Your Life" series of
reunion specials. Anyone & anything, from an oak tree to Forgetful
Jones had their own "Here Is Your Life" special, but my favorite was
the one for Sneaker, an old, worn out, red Chuck Taylor lost in the
back of a closet until the day Guy Smiley decided he deserved a
tribute. Sneaker was visited by his designer, his shoemaker, his owner
(represented by her bare feet & legs rolled up like she's expecting a
flood in her closet), & his left counterpart (who was bought by a
sculptor & bronzed as part of an abstract statue).
In the end, Sneaker found himself lonely after reliving his memories,
& wasn't looking forward to an eternity at the back of the closet.
That's when Oscar shows up & offers to add Righty to his rotten
sneaker collection... but not before he receives a complimentary
memory book & official Guy Smiley ankle bracelet!
Sneaker makes the list mostly because gutting the soles of my old
Chucks & gluing two halves of a ping pong ball onto the tongue is on
my eternal to-do list.

In 1932, there were an estimated 150 pinball-machine

churned out more than 100,000 machines annually.
