Paying For Personal Info Online Not
Likely To Get You Very Far
06/03/2004 10:47 AMI'm pretty sure we've seen articles quite similar to this before, but
the NY Times has sent a reporter out to
test out
one of those "find out anything about anyone" online services. As
you might expect, they tried to find out some info on themselves, and
while the writer appears to have spent plenty of money, it doesn't
look like he found out very much. Some of it was quite accurate, but
it was mixed in with so much false data that you would probably have
to already know him (or be him) to know which was true and which was
false. Also, it seems likely that much of the info could be figured
out from other sources for free. The best part was the "background
check" the site he used offered for $45. That told him the names of
(possibly, if they got it right) a few of his neighbors, and that his
wife and his daughter were actually the same person. So, for those of
you worried about others looking you up and digging up your private
info, rest assured that the amount of data they dig up will probably
just as misleading as it is revealing.

Is The Contact Info You Provide Someone
Public Or Private Info?
02/10/2004 05:32 PMI've complained in the past about the
annoyanc
e of Plaxo spam. Lately, the more I've been thinking about Plaxo,
the more it annoys me. Though I've never had anything to do with the
company, and have never responded to a single spam, they now have a
database with my contact info that others gave it. Bambi Francisco
over at CBS Marketwatch has
noticed the same thing with Spoke Software, which she
finds disconcerting. However, I'm wondering about the bigger legal
issues: is the personal info you've given to individuals for business
or personal reasons shareable? Some say that all Spoke is doing is
collecting
public information. However, if the info was given to an
individual, is there a reasonable expectation that the information is
not public at all, but for private use only? I'm not sure what the
answer is, but I wonder how long until there's a lawsuit around this
issue. Personally, like so many other things, I don't think it's
something you can get "back in the box," but these systems do reveal
to me who is freely giving away personal information about me, which
could make me less willing to do business with them in the future.

all.info
12/12/2003 06:45 AMall.infohttp://www.all.info/All.info is a searchable directory of topics focused on web site
credibility. Our directory provides searchers with additional info
provided by the site’s producer. This information helps our
searchers better find and evaluate sites. All.info also runs the
popular search resource center, SearchEngines.com. Since June 2000,
hundreds of thousands of users, search professionals and members of
the media have relied on SearchEngines.com as a collection of
top-quality information about searching.
All.info is the
first search directory to tackle the issue of site credibility in a
scalable system. Aside from a proprietary ranking algorithm, All.info
uses the information provided by web site producers, who know most
about their sites, to help users better find and assess the
credibility of these web sites. When a professor assigns a paper, or
when a manufacturer is looking for unbiased industry information, or a
third-grader is trying to learn more about math, All.info will help
identify which information would be most useful, relevant and

Your Info (Right Or Wrong) Is Not Your
Own
03/23/2005 04:41 PMTwo separate pieces this morning highlight a number of points that
have been popping up on Techdirt quite a bit over the past few weeks.
The first is a summary (once again) of
all of the various private data leaks/hacks/handouts/whatever
that may have put your personal data at risk. To be honest, while
it's getting a lot of attention this month, it's likely that this is
all par for the course. It's just that the press has finally picked
up on it. The article notes that, so far, the only thing Congress has
done is try to make the punishment for identity theft higher -- which
is an after the fact solution, that does little to push companies to
be more secure with
their your data. The article
also notes, again, that none of these data leaks came via the
internet, and there was
nothing any
indivi
dual could have done to stop them. The second story concerns the
fact that
Choic
ePoint has plenty of incorrect data about people -- and no way to
request a change. It turns out (whooooops!)
that's
against the law. Of course, given their apparent inability to
protect your data, perhaps it's
good that they can't get your
data correct. Maybe people should start
purposely putting
errors into these reports so they can track who's leaking the data.

New x-ray fluorescence fingerprint
detection
03/22/2005 04:59 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory have devised a new method
to detect the chemical residue left behind by your fingertips. They
used micro-X-ray fluorescence (MXRF) to reveal the sodium, potassium,
chlorine, and other elements excreted in sweat and deposited in a
fingerprint pattern. From Los Alamos News:
The technique has several advantages over traditional fingerprint
detection methods that involve treating the suspect area with powders,
liquids, or vapors in order to add color to the fingerprint so that it
can be easily seen and photographed. Using this technique, known as
contrast enhancement, it is sometimes difficult to detect fingerprints
present on certain substances, such as multicolored backgrounds,
fibrous papers and textiles, wood, leather, plastic, adhesives and
human skin.
Since MXRF is noninvasive, a fingerprint analyzed by the method is
left pristine for examination by other methods like DNA extraction.
