Circuits: The Last Goodbye

Circuits: The Last Goodbye 03/24/2005 02:53 PM

circuits_hat.jpgI had intended to write some short note about the passing of the New York Times' Circuits section, now set to be dismantled and set to work throughout the paper like nerdy orphans. I was going to write about my sadness at its departure, so quickly after a crowed-about redesign, but before it had a chance to grow into the accessible but technical resource it had the potential to become.

Instead, here is a picture of David Pogue crawling through his backyard in a fur cap from an indeterminate animal source. If that was good enough for his last piece in the Circuits section, then it's good enough for my last mention of them. If you need a shoulder to cry on, Circuits writers, I'm here for you, hatless.

Circuits Discovers USB

Circuits Discovers USB 06/10/2004 11:38 AM

10USB.cover.jpg imageReading The Times' Circuits section invariably causes a single metallic tear to vent from my society-integration hardware, wetting my dome. Sometimes it's from the cognitive trauma of trying to parse whether or not they're even talking about technology anymore or just repurposing old articles from the Steamer Tramp Watch column or something, but sometimes -- rare, precious times -- I get misty as I watch them discover something for the first time, as a retarded child waking from a coma would marvel at a flower, or toilet paper, fawning over and cuddling and gleefully showing the new technology to us. This week's blissful bursting into awareness? Motherfucking USB. Awwww. (Thanks to the Circuits team's case worker, Jeff.)

Circuits Discovers Shuffle

Circuits Discovers Shuffle 08/27/2004 01:48 PM

26ipod.cover.jpg imageHoly shit.

I can only imagine the scene at the New York Times a few days ago, as a team of Circuits section editors gathered around a table in a room lit by only a single lamp, shining down at the stupefying gadget known as... iPod.

Beads of sweat gathered on the brows and backfat of each one as they gazed unflinchingly at the white devil, unable to unlock its hermetic secrets; a group of men and women - elevated masters of the occult tradition of tech journalism - their minds broken and laid bare on the tiny aluminum altar that Apple had raised in their midst.

An intern slammed open the door, his silhouette framed by the light from the rest of the Gray Lady's offices, pushing a wave of nauseating synchronicity with the iPod's famous ad campaign into the room.

"Sirs, I've got dozens of great leads about technology being used during the upcoming Republican National..." He was silenced by an upturned palm from the Arch-Editor.

"You fool," gasped the AE, as he fell to one knee, black fluid running from his ears, "Have you not heard? This iPod can play music... at random."

A new book, "Google Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips and Tools," by Tara Calishain and Rael Dornfest (O'Reilly & Associates), is the latest resource in a growing industry to help people become better online searchers. Although a large part of the book is intended for programmers who adapt Google's search services for their own Web sites, there is much in it for everyday users.

Magic Ink Grows Metal Circuits

Magic Ink Grows Metal Circuits 07/06/2004 08:29 AM

metal_tank203b.jpg imageUK Firm QinetiQ is using a new technique to grow circuits that, besides being relatively cheap, is also relatively friendly to the environment. In the process a flexible surface, like plastic, is printed with a special ink, then soaked in an electroless chemical solution, causing the metal to grow on the ink. While they won't be growing silicon microprocessors any time soon, QinetiQ plans to primarily focus on producing large batches of RFID tags, although other technologies, like Frequency Selective Surfaces, which can bounce some radio waves and let other through. The real question is, as usual, when can we use this process at home?

Eye Dazzling Laser 01/04/2005 11:12 AM

super_daz.jpg imageFirst, I should say: I'm sorry about shining those laser pointers at the jets. I just thought they'd crash or something—I didn't realize people would get all freaked out. I promise never to do it again, but as my influence over military spending is patchy at best (my line iteming of R&D for a carbon-fiber "Super Bong" actually made it pretty far up the chain, but was nixed for being potentially "too 'Peace on Earthy'"), I can't promise that the military won't develop laser blasting pulses designed to blind and disorient both mechanical and meat-based targets. In fact, they already have.

Shocking Laser Tag 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

laser_shockers.jpgThe most interactive laser tag systems to date simply vibrate when shot, but stop short of inflicting any real pain. Herein lies their fatal flaw, and Gadget Shop has set out to fix this error with their Shocking Guns—a laser tag set that shocks the user when shot by an opponent. It offers two degrees of shock power and "may interfere with electrical devices such as pacemakers," if that weren't already obvious. Each $45 kit comes with two guns and two breastplates, as well as the six AAA batteries required for them.

DIY CO2 Laser CNC Table

DIY CO2 Laser CNC Table 03/19/2005 02:54 AM
Owen White bought a Coherent G100 100 Watt CO2 laser on eBay and decided to create his own CNC table. He chronicled his construction project in his blog. He is now using his DIY CNC table to cut all sorts of things. Owen writes, "Your readers might be interested in the documentation on the computer controlled circuitry to run the CNC table and laser. For circuit prototyping I used some conventional off-the-shelf electronics packages to design the circuits, then mapped the net diagrams from the circuit software to locations on a wire-wrap board using some perl code. This simplified the process of staring at a circuit and deciding where wire-wrap connections should be made. Prototype PCBs were also made. I used AVR microcontrollers for a couple functions."

green-laser-pointer2.jpg imageI'm not positive, but I'm fairly sure that the team at GadgetMadness violated at least two or three chapters of the PATRIOT ACT in the process of reviewing the Green Laser Pointer II from ThinkGeek. I mean, isn't it illegal to use lasers to point at things outside? Isn't it illegal to use lasers for fun? John Ashcroft would roll over in his oil-anointed grave if he knew someone had illuminated a water tower with a green laser from a distance of 1.24 miles away, then provided a video of their terrorist act. Whatever you do, please do not read this review, purchase a Green Laser Pointer II from ThinkGeek yourself, then beat and film their distance record. We have to give up some laser liberty to protect our laser freedoms, people.

Well now, a couple of weeks ago I received a press release from NZXT again, this time announcing their new line of Nemesis PC cases. When I saw the first product photo's I figured something like 'man, this thing is going to be a huge hit'. A well designed and highly styled PC case with 120mm silent LED colored fans, active heat/thermal monitoring and LCD display. it's buffed with more features like Aluminum chassis, the front LED colored 'Eye' can be set to 7 different colors, great paint job, front panel for USB 2.0, Microphone, FireWire and last but not least it has 9 drive bays (2 3.5").
