A junior staff member of Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) was recently put on leave for improperly accessing Democratic memos from a shared Senate fileserver. In a statement on the matter, Sen. Hatch said, "I am mortified that this improper, unethical and simply unacceptable breach of confidential files may have occurred on my watch." A Republican staff member who read the memos claims, however, that there was "no hacking, no stealing, and no violation of any Senate rule". It seems clear that the Democrat's IT services in the US Senate need to be more methodical about protecting their party's documents. Nevertheless, modern computer security laws say that it's wrong to access data to which you have no permission, regardless of whether there is protection on the data or not. The fact that the data was accessed from an unsecured shared fileserver which is used by members of the bi-partisan judiciary committee is irrelevant.

RIAA goes after 531 more file sharers

RIAA goes after 531 more file sharers 02/18/2004 10:49 AM
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is continuing its tactic of filing suits against anonymous "John Doe" computer users who the organization accuses of illegally sharing copyright material over peer to peer networks. The association filed lawsuits against 531 unnamed people on Tuesday, claiming that they are offering substantial amounts of copyrighted music files for free. The legal actions were filed in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando and Trenton, New Jersey, the RIAA said.

Music Sharers Move Around

Music Sharers Move Around 03/24/2005 04:47 PM
Here's yet another study that it looks like the press is misinterpreting to turn a small story into a bigger story. CNET is claiming that people who share files online are moving away from online services to trading via their iPods instead. That's a stretch. Beyond the technical difficulty involved in "trading via your iPod," this claim is based on simply the directional trends. The study claims that fewer people are sharing music online, but more are using other means, such as trading via an iPod. However, if you look at the absolute numbers, they're likely to show that such "iPod trading" is a tiny fraction of those who share online. Furthermore, you have to wonder if there's a bias from those surveyed -- since they now know about all the lawsuits, they may be less likely to admit they share music online. About the only thing this study really shows is that people will continue to look for a variety places to get the music they like, and they aren't limited to just one. This means that for every effort the recording industry makes to shut down file sharing offerings, people will just move on to something else.

Will Your Password Need A Password?

Will Your Password Need A Password? 06/01/2004 02:43 AM
If you hadn't realized it already, simple username/password combos are a pretty weak form of security - yet they're pretty much all we have for many important online systems that store our most vital information. While there are other solutions out there, many companies (especially in the US) have been incredibly slow in adopting "two-factor authentication" systems that require a password plus something else - such as a onetime code generated by a device you have to have with you (or built into your computer). The idea, then, is that if your password is revealed, no one else has the device, so it's useless. If they find the device, they don't have your password, so it's useless. However, so far, many users don't value this additional security very much - and the devices still aren't all that cheap. Plus, many companies are worried that users will react negatively to such systems as it may slow down the user experience - causing them to look for other (albeit less secure) alternatives. Then, of course, there's the worry that people will start using such systems that aren't compatible with each other, so you'll need separate devices for every account - which would be much worse than before. Others, such as those in the fingerprint scanning business think a biometric approach makes much more sense - but that leads to all sorts of other questions and issues. Still, as there are more and more cases of fraud and identity theft due to so much weak security, it seems increasingly likely that companies will be forced to adopt more secure methods.

Last year we pointed to a study saying that people would give you their password in exchange for a cheap ballpoint pen, and this year the prize has changed, but the result is the same. A new study shows that all it takes is a chocolate bar and plenty of people will cough up their passwords. Of course, what they don't realize is that whoever was giving out the chocolate bars was the real sucker. A study last month showed that people will cough up all sorts of info if you just ask for it, without giving anything in return.
