You would think that, if someone needed to tell a lie, they'd prefer to do so over email, where they wouldn't let their voice betray them. However, a new study says that people are more likely to lie over the telephone than over email. Amazingly, email-based lies were at the bottom of the list. People told the most lies over the telephone, the second most face-to-face, followed up by instant messages and email last. Maybe that's why people are tryin g to fight parking tickets via the phone. Apparently, there's just something truthful about email. The basic theory by the researcher, though, is that people tell lies by voice because there's no record of what they said - and it can vanish into thin air and be disputed later. They also lie more during live conversations because they're put on the spot and don't have time to think through a good answer. That certainly makes some amount of sense. Of course, the other theory (which I like best) is that the subjects for this study lied in giving their results...

A few months ago we wrote about how one guy predicted that 3G mobile phones would never take off because the camera phone part would make it difficult to lie about where you were. We had no idea that most people used their mobile phones to lie about their location (or that that single factor would damn the entire product category). However, apparently the lying segment of the population is out there, and they've got money to spend, so solutions started cropping up, including a way to put fake image backgrounds into camera phone images to make people think you're somewhere you're not and (even more impressive) fake audio sounds to complete the faux imagery. There are even (apparently) bars that have fake office backdrops for camera phone enabled workers sneaking out for a drink. Douglas Rushkoff is now wondering about all this technological effort put into helping us lie better and wonders if it really shows how technology advancements make us more truthful. All these efforts show that people now need to make much more of an effort to be dishonest, which makes it even clearer (perhaps to themselves as well) how much they are lying. In fact, Rushkoff believes that such enforced honesty should be seen as an opportunity for people, rather than as a reason to avoid the technology altogether.

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/voda_802se.jpg" alt="voda_802se.jpg image" width="398" height="360" class="center"/>Looks like the rumored Sony Ericsson Z1020 has been reborn as the Vodafone 802SE, a tri-band Bluetooth camera with a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera, 262k-color screen, and Memory Stick Duo Pro slots. Honestly, I don't know if it lives up to all the hype, but I know lots of you guys were clamoring for it, so far be it from me to judge it too harshly.

I was told it was up on Sony's Japanese site, but if it was, it looks like it's been pulled to me. (Thanks, Andrew!)

Among today's top stories, a new "Fox News Poll" that says 33% of those surveyed think the media is too easy on Kerry and 42% think the media is too tough on Bush. [Of course, if it were limited to FoxNews coverage, you'd probably see dramatically different numbers in the opposite direction.]

But let's just look at the numbers they've given us. 33% think the media is too easy on Kerry. That means 66% (or 2/3rds) think the media is fair or too tough on Kerry, right? Isn't that the real story?

It's not likely we'll see it over our way, but Japanese carrier has a new Sony Ericsson handset, the A1402S (perhaps that name has a little more zing in Japanese). It looks like fairly standard fare, though, so no need to shed those big crocodile tears like we normally do when Japan gets a new phone with an 80-megapixel videocamera that cleans your teeth and punches your grandma all at once. PhoneMag has a few details, such as they are. One notable thing, though, is that the A1402S comes with a pretty big selection of swappable faceplates. Not groundbreaking, but it makes for a nice picture, at least.

Sony Ericsson has a new phone for Japan's au cellular service, dubbed the "A1402S II." It is, as expected, the successor to the "A1402S." It's a somewhat underwhelming phone, though, so it better be cheap; prices are not yet announced. Although it does of course have the Japanese standard (no jealous; stand proud, America) QVGA (240 x 320) resolution on a 2.3-inch display, the camera is a mere 0.34MP (so take some heart in that failing). A cameraless version of the phone will also be available.

So fine, but why do they get all the pink phones? I clack my claws down each link of my chitinous sensor braids in protest.

Finally! Sony Ericsson finally announces the P910 smartphone -- featured previously here as the "Layla" prototype -- a Symbian OS v7.0-powered update to the very successful P800/P900 phones. Three versions will be released with differing GSM bands to operate in various markets worldwide, as well five different integrated keyboard variants to make thumb typing in different languages easier. In addition, the P910 now has expanded memory (64MB, up from 16MB) and supports Sony's Memory Stick Duo Pro in sizes up to 1GB. The screen has also been bumped from a 65K color screen to a 262K color version.

The Register's Andrew Orlowski reviews the Sony Ericsson K700i and comes away almost totally impressed, with the exception of a horrendous battery life that makes this moderately-powered, fine-screened handset a once-a-day charger. Other than that, though, it's aces. The FM radio works well, the screen is gorgeous, and the K700i's limited web browsing ability is zippy and painless. Well, it's camera is a little lackluster, I guess (it's still just a VGA-quality sensor, despite any claptrap from Sony Ericsson otherwise), but all in all it looks like a solid phone for someone who doesn't mind the daily recharge.
