JVC's Sub-Optimal Sub-Notebook

JVC's Sub-Optimal Sub-Notebook

JVC's Sub-Optimal Sub-Notebook 04/26/2004 11:34 AM

JVC's new sub-notebook is a cute little bug, with a very handy feature for owners of the JVC GR-HD1 DV camcorder: an integrated HD-TS decoder. Unfortunately, the 1GHz mini-laptop has an oddly-proportioned 1024x600 screen, crippling its usefulness in the sort of day-to-day work for which lightweight sub-notebooks are designed. Read...

jvc_mystery.jpg imageDetails are very slim about JVC's new "product." As a matter of fact, I can go ahead and list everything made public right here for you:

"A new style," "A new look," "4GB," and "MPEG-2."

Though these details could be describing a new type of turkey sandwich, the general consensus thus far is some sort of new palm-sized video camera from the company. More info is scheduled to be announced on September 19th; I personally hope it's a turkey sandwich.

Just like the recently-developed HD DVD/DVD dual-disc format from Toshiba, JVC is showing a new prototype triple-layer Blu-Ray/DVD hybrid that puts a 25GB Blu-Ray layer on top of a coventional two-layer 8.5GB DVD disc. Dual format discs are hoped to ease the transition from DVD to whatever format will win the upcoming standards war (probably Blu-Ray).

JVC's Interlink 7310 mini-laptop 11/19/2003 11:48 AM
DesignTechnica review of JVC's mini-laptop, the Interlink 7310. At just under 2 pounds, the 7310 lays claim to being the smallest Centrino laptop on the market. The 7310 isn't as dimunitive as Sony's lilliputian U101 laptop, but with its squint-inducing 8.9-inch display and cramped keyboard, it is approaching the limits of how small a laptop can get before it becomes impossible to get a sustained amount of work done with it. The 7310 is currently available in Japan, but it appears unlikely that JVC will ever sell the laptop here in the US. Read...

- How can I make my website's structure more navigable?
- How should text be presented within a website?
- How can I effectively use images on my website?
- Are frames ever appropriate?
- How can I design a visually pleasing interface that follows usability principles?
- How can I reduce the major user annoyances on my site?
- How can I make my site more accessible to children?
- How can I make my site more accessible to older adults?
- How can I make sure my site follows general Web conventions?
- How can my website promote customer sales and loyalty?

08/01/2004 03:30 AM
According to a recent study by Current Analysis, unit sales of notebooks equipped with a widescreen 15.4-inch display have steadily continued to climb throughout the first half of 2004. As of June 30, the widescreen market accounted for 48% of all notebooks sold, compared to only 15% in December 2003. The growth represents the highest share yet for the widescreen models since its introduction in the spring of 2003 and demonstrates widescreen systems are selling in greater numbers than its traditional square counterparts. JVC's Mystery Hard Drive Camcorders
Revealed: They're Hard Drive Camcorders
09/14/2004 11:18 AM

jvc_hdd_cams.jpg imageOops, I almost forgot about these new cameras announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500, though).

Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.

walmartnotebook.jpg imageAs a back-to-school special, this $600 ECS-branded notebook from Wal-Mart isn't half bad - 14-inch screen, Athlon XP-M 1600+, Wi-Fi (b), and DVD-ROM. Add a little extra memory to boost up the 128MB stock setup and you've got yourself a pretty decent little machine for browsing porn and downloading term papers. Plus it comes with a legal copy of XP Home, so you'll only have to go to jail for five years when you blow that away and install XP Pro (don't quote me on the legal specifics).

The future of the notebook?

The future of the notebook? 04/12/2005 05:21 PM
From technological and design point of view, the notebook has never ceased to be a source of surprises. From futuristic colors to ultra high tech designs and ultra shock resistant cases the notebook has tried them all. In the last time, it looks like the searches have stopped and that there are two trends that dominate the notebook industry. The first one considers the notebook the replacement of the desktop and consequently the producers fit their computers with the latest 3D graphic chipsets and a lot of multimedia options at the expense of battery life and weight.

The followers of the second trend consider that mobility has to be the key feature of the notebooks, and therefore a weight bigger than 1.5 kilograms is regarded as blasphemy. It doesn’t matter that such a notebook is starting to look like a keyboard that has a LCD attached to it and that producers are giving up on every component that can add to the weight of the notebook: optical devices, supplementary batteries, or high capacity hard disks; the components are still available but only in the form of docks.

The Birth of the Notebook

The Birth of the Notebook 03/22/2005 04:59 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Chris Null has written a great article about the early history of portable PCs for Mobile PC magazine.
Images Features Birthofnotebook Osbourne Inspired by the IBM 5100 and Xerox's Notetaker -- a 48-pound machine with a keyboard that folded over the display -- Osborne's eponymous computer was cobbled together from the cheapest parts he could find. The Osborne 1 hit the market at $1,795, with dual floppy drives and a 5-inch CRT. Flip the keyboard over the front, latch it on, and your 24.5-pound computer was ready to go wherever you needed it. Osborne had amazing success with the product, but it was fatally crushed by the birth of Compaq in 1983, which copied the Osborne carefully while adding one killer feature: IBM compatibility.

Link

UPDATE: Stefan says: "I actually worked on an Osborne in the early '80s. The college SF club had one. We used it to lay out the schedule and generate individually numbered tickets for our SF convention. I recall using the included BASIC to create a program that would generate a Superbowl betting grid.

"One of the big selling points for the Osborne was the software. The company pioneered the concept of bundling. In addition to the CP/M operating system, you got WordStar, a spreadsheet, a flat-file database program and so on. It even had a nice app for reading and writing PC-format disks.

"The computer itself was, frankly, a piece of shit. The monitor was 52 columns wide; when your typing reached the end of a line the display shifted left. It was terribly susceptible to static shock. You learned to save your work every few minutes in dry weather, because resets and lockups were a regular occurrence."

flybook-A33i-S.jpg imageLooks like the Computex internet cock-up has sussed itself out long enough for The Register to file this report profiling an eminently internetted sub-notebook from Taiwanese vendor Dialogue, branded the 'Flybook.' Not only does the Transmeta Crusoe-powered laptop sport WiFi (802.11b sadly) and optional Bluetooth, but there's even a built-in tri-band GPRS modem, as well. The 1024 x 600 8.9-inch screen would be "ideal for DVD playback if there was a built-in optical drive" notes The Reg's Tony Smith, but in a sub-notebook this size an external drive is fairly standard. The Flybook even has a touch-sensitive screen that can be flipped about like a Tablet PC, although it runs regular Windows XP. Looks like a great little notebook, and although there is no pricing information as of yet, you'll be able to pick up one in black, white, silver, red, or blue as soon as they find a Western vendor.

Dialogue Flybook Profiled 06/23/2004 03:55 PM

handtops_com-news-18-4.jpg imageIt's funny -- not 'haha' but 'heh' -- how over the last couple of months the FlipStartHQ has transmogrified into Handtops.com. Mostly, by my estimation, because the FlipStart is taking so damn long to come out. Still, if they weren't doing such a good job, we wouldn't keep linking them, and this profile of the Dialogue FlyBook, the super-connected ultra-portable laptop that probably presses the upper boundary between 'palmtop' and 'laptop' is as good as we've come to expect, without a ton of new information, necessarily, but a nice overview of the laptop that aims to make sure its users stay connected, hell or high water, or at least Bluetooth or GPRS (or WiFi or Modem or Ethernet).

Dialogue Flybook Reviewed 07/14/2004 03:18 PM

news-fb-5.jpg imageIf an ultra-portable laptop/tablet with a SIM card slot -- yes, like those found normally in GSM mobile phones -- makes your gadget dork fluff up a bit, you might want to check out this review of the Dialogue Flybook -- the first English review I've seen. Besides being tiny, the best thing about the Flybook is its extra connectivity. Not only does it have the standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but it also has GSM/GPRS capabilities (hence the SIM card) so that you can, in lieu of any other, faster connection, hop on your cellular carrier's GSM network and get internet wherever you are.

The Flybook technically isn't a handtop, but it's not too hefty, either, as you can see in the picture. It does look bigger than a DVD case, though -- no matter what Handtops.com says.

(He should learn to do it in a sentence or three like me.) HP Compaq (HP's Compaq? HP Compaq's) new nx9110 is a solidly built, well performing widescreen laptop that can be had for a perfectly reasonable price considering what you get (around £1200; it's UK-only I believe). And as much as I might want to give him hell about it, Gordon does have a point -- there's not much that differentiates laptops these days besides 3D capabilities (speaking of which, the nx9110 has pretty poor polygon pushing power).
