Dino & Sibilla

Dino & Sibilla 09/14/2004 10:50 AM
With our shipwrecked hearts. Ninety years ago Dino Campan a, impoverished and outcast poet self-published his book Canti Orfici (.pdf file) ("Orphic Songs", mastefully transl ated into English by poet Charles Wright). The birth of the book wasn't marred only by Campana's mental illness (soon afterwards, he was committed to a mental institution). Initially, the "Orphic Songs" were submitted for possible publication to the poet/ painter A rdengo Soffici, who promptly lost the manuscript. Campana spent the next six months reconstructing the book from memory. Finally in 1914, with the help of a local printer of religious tracts, he self-published a first edition of around 500, selling only 44. Campana attempted, with marginal success, to sell the remainder of his portion of the run (the printer had taken half the books as partial printing payment) himself at cafes in Florence. He is now remembered as one of Italy's greatest, most imaginative poets (with biographies ,award -winning movies about his troubled life and his dangerous, scandalous love affair with fellow writer Sibilla Aleramo. Cory Doctorow: U Michigan's Natural History Museum is using 3D scanners and fabbers to produce realistic bones to fill in the gaps in their articulated fossil skeletons for a new show:
In the past, scientists and exhibit preparators used a variety of techniques—borrowing bones from another specimen of the same species, size and stage of development, for instance, or manually sculpting a replacement bone, based on measurements and comparisons with the rest of the skeleton.

Now, however, Fisher and his team are using 3-D digitization, modeling and rapid prototyping—technologies that are widely used in manufacturing, especially in the automobile industry—to produce full-scale replicas of the bones they lack.

"In cases where there are paired bones in the body—left and right—but we found only one, we can generate the missing bone by making a digital model of the one we have, reflecting it on the computer and then producing a physical prototype of the reflected model," Fisher said. "Compared to all of the previous approaches, digitizing and rapid prototyping are no more expensive, require much less labor and are certainly more exact, more faithful to the original."

Raptor is a C library providing a set of parsers and serializers for Resource Description Framework (RDF) triples by parsing syntaxes into RDF triples and serializing triples into a syntax. The parsers support RDF/XML, N-Triples, Turtle, XML RSS, and Atom 0.3 via RSS tag soup. The serializers support RDF/XML, N-Triples, and RSS 1.0. Raptor handles RDF/XML as used by RDF applications such as RSS 1.0, FOAF, DOAP, Dublin Core, and OWL. It can use either expat or libxml2 for XML parsing, libcurl when available for URI retrieval, and is portable to many POSIX systems.
Changes:
A new "RDF/XML with abbreviations" serializer was added. Support for RSS 1.1 was added to the RSS tag soup parser. More fixes were made to work around the broken OSX libxml2.

Rescue your teeth with Mexican dentistry

Rescue your teeth with Mexican dentistry 12/21/2003 09:34 PM
Amazing first-person story of a guy who couldn't afford the full set of caps his teeth needed and was looking at a lifetime of dentures, who became a medical tourist to Tijuana and got the work done for a fraction of the cost in Mexico.
I mentally multiplied $715 by 28 and groaned. Either my teeth were about to become the most expensive thing I ever owned, or I was going to lose them and likely have to start wearing dentures at the age of 39...

Once again we found tales of $120 caps, and of an entire industry catering to American medical tourists. In several places along the US-Mexico border, clusters of dentists operate within convenient driving distance so that an inexpensive bus tour from Las Vegas or a trolley ride from San Diego could bring you to where this cheap care was available.

Nowhere did we find a horror story -- indeed, everything we read was very enthusiastic. We did research and began to lay plans.

Inside, my story and practical details for others whose dentists may be about to give them a nasty surprise.

Neuromancer radio play preservation
effort in the teeth of bureacracy
03/19/2005 03:03 AM
Cory Doctorow: A fan of the BBC radio play adaptation of William Gibson's Neuromancer has launched a one-fan preservation and distribution effort. Jody Armstrong has the audio available for download on a web-page, along with some fan-art and a plaintive disclaimer begging someone from the Beeb to return the phone-calls and emails left asking for permission to do so.
I've been trying to locate somebody at the BBC or some information in relation to redistributing this recording to allow those who were not able to hear the play to enjoy it. I have sent a letter, four e-mails via the tortuously confusing BBC Website contacts page and made over a dozen phone calls to various departments. I have left numerous voicemails as a result of these phoen calls. Nobody has responded to the messages, those I spoke too seemed to respond like a dog that had been shown a card trick and no hint as to whether I can redistribute it has been forthcoming.

If, whether it be the BBC itself, those responsibel for the play or William Gibson himself, has a problem with this distribution of the play, please bear in mind 4 things before breaking out the lawyers.

1) The bandwidth, this site and even the pretty pictures you see on this page is mine, an impoverished Gibson fan who wants to do a favour for the other fans. It's out of my pocket, I'm spending my money, be kind...

2) I have made attempts to contact you and have been ignored. True I am probably breaking copyright laws, however I am promoting 'Play of the Week', William Gibson's work and the talented people behind the radioplay.

3) E-Mail me, I'll take it down straight away.
