US Army wants "wise" G.I.s

US Army wants "wise" G.I.s 06/02/2004 12:10 PM
Spotted on Noah Schachtman's DefenseTech blog today:
Soldiers of today need to new "skill sets. to function effectively under high-stress and other emotionally-laden circumstances," the Army says. "These conditions are sometimes associated with interpersonal transactions but may also emerge as reactions to fast-paced, high-demand events and situations." The best way to determine whether a grunt has these skill sets or not: gauge his "emotional intelligence," or EI. It's made up of four abilities, according to the Army: "the perception, management, expression, and utilization of emotion."

The military is asking companies for ideas on how to put together a new, "comprehensive personnel management and training system" that would assess and build "an individual's ability to recognize, express, react and manage emotions associated with these interpersonal events and emotionally-laden circumstances."

Similarly, the Army would like to find leaders "who possess the wisdom to extend their expertise and values beyond service interests." But right now, it doesn't have an efficient way to find out who's wise and who's not.

US Army Spying on Civilians?

US Army Spying on Civilians? 01/27/2004 08:49 AM
Two days ago, a video taken off the infrared sight system on a US Army OH-58D Kiowa was posted to a BitTorrent site which features various military videos. What is disturbing about the video is its subject—a couple making love in the back seat of a convertible—and not just because our 'brave men in uniform' are using multimillion dollar aircraft to play peeping Tom. No. They're spying. On what could possibly be US civilians, on US soil. Which is illegal.

Army Unveils New Uniforms

Army Unveils New Uniforms 06/15/2004 05:25 AM

vert.uniform.ap.jpg imageThe Army unveiled their new uniform, with a new camouflage sporting a green, tan, and gray mixture (based on a similar Marine Corps design) that is meant to work in all environments, from the concrete jungle to the forest jungle to the, uhm, sand jungle. Replacing many of the buttons with zippers and Velcro for easy access (including lots of new pockets for gear and gizmos), the new uniforms are looser and more able to integrate with the increasing amount of body armor being worn by soldiers in ongoing campaigns. This is the first major update to the uniform since 1981, when the Army declared all soldiers must wear pants in combat.

Let's hear it for the al-Mahdi Army!!

Let's hear it for the al-Mahdi Army!! 04/09/2004 03:55 PM
I was watching the news last night, and among the usual vagueness of "insurgents" and "attacks on coalition forces" was some footage of a march by the al-Mahdi Militia. This is apparently some group of supporters of the Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. The footage itself was pretty impressive: thousands of men marchin in black, pressed military uniforms. They were apparently unarmed, but the march took them through streets lined with buildings on which they had placed their own snipers, and past a reviewing stand of Shi'ite clerics.

Iraq's Old Army May Be Recalled (AP) 07/11/2004 01:18 PM
AP - Iraq's new leader wants to call some of its old army back to duty to help restore peace in his war-torn land. Disbanding that defeated force 13 months ago was a mistake made in Washington, says a U.S. Army colonel who held a pivotal role in Baghdad at the time.

DARPA Wants BigDog for the Army

DARPA Wants BigDog for the Army 03/14/2005 06:03 PM
A recent Guardian Unlimited article describes the latest test results of a four legged robot being built by Boston Dynamics under a DARPA contract. The company claims the internal combustion-powered, biomemetic (or biodynotic as they call) robot, named BigDog, will be able to carry a single soldier's gear where ever the soldier goes. The company says the prototype can carry up to 50kg and climb 30 degree slopes. The first military versions will be expensive but once mass-produced, a consumer version would be much cheaper, perhaps priced "similar to a car". The company is still not releasing photos of the robot but a Wired article from last year includes some drawings.

Swiss Army iPod

Swiss Army iPod 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
Apple are currently marketing some clever add-ons for the iPod. Belkin have produced a clever media reader, called the er.. Belkin Media Reader. The device allows you to transfer files from memory cards to your iPod. At 90 it's priced a bit steep, but if you're out and about taking lots of high res digital snaps, you'd easily spend more on a couple of 256MB memory cards. Other interesting add-ons include the Belkin Voice Recorder and the Belkin FireWire Battery. I also have it on good word that Griffi n Technology's iFM will be shipping at the end of the month. It's a bummer that the iTrip is not available in the UK, but I'm looking forward to having a good quality FM radio with the iPod.

I think we can all accept a few more pot holes in our roads and a few less meals on the table if we get explodo robot circuses.
