Textbooks Hit The Torrents

Textbooks Hit The Torrents 09/07/2004 12:08 PM

Not all web piracy is the sexy stuff, like games and movies. Julis Schorzman notes that one of his college textbooks recently showed up as a BitTorrent.

The book the UW uses to teach Calculus showed up on Suprnova the other day. Here's the link. (Wish we had Bit Torrent around when I was a freshman in college. We had to pay all $140.00 for the [tome]! Spoiled kids!

You'd think someone would have to put a lot of work into pirating a calc book, since they contain so many symbols that an OCR system would have problems with.

Interesting side note: Julis' blog contains a tag (I think) he made up, <liblink>. Firefox reads that as <liblink>, resurrecting that Internet horror of ages past, the blink tag. Odd that such a progressive browser is so eager to enable useless old tags that it even does it where it isn't supposed to.

Free textbooks for Cisco training 06/21/2004 10:31 AM
A Cisco networking instructor got sick of Cisco price-gouging his students for textbooks so he wrote his own and is giving away the electronic edition and selling the print edition through Lulu for $20 -- and he gets a $5 for every copy sold.
Tired of seeing his students pay exorbitant prices for Cisco Systems' high end computer training textbooks, Basham found a way to give the information away for free.

He wrote an 800-page, two-volume manual of numbers, formulas and test tips that can be obtained by anyone who sends him an e-mail.

Laptops and Servers

Laptops and Servers 02/01/2005 09:44 PM
It just dawned on me that in a desk-side box, heat is not a major problem because it’s got a room to cool it off, usually without too many other computers in it. Laptops, however, are like back-room “mainframe” servers in that heat is a big deal. In the one case you’re worried about your users’ gonads and in the other your HVAC budget, but the problem is the same. Right now, the heat budget is a big concern for the guys at Sun who design our biggest servers. It’s no secret that our throughput computing initiative is partly about this: lower clock speeds, more cores, thread-level parallelism. Am I predicting that laptops with SPARC processors will be leaping off the shelves next quarter? I wouldn’t go that far. But I am smelling converging design spaces.
