Mozilla-Based Browsers Are Gaining

Mozilla-Based Browsers Are Gaining 07/01/2004 10:49 AM

Are the Browser Wars Back? - How Mozilla's Firefox trumps Internet Explorer: This is a good article from Slate that rings true — Mozilla and Firefox are surging in the market right now. More and more, people are switching.

You've probably been told to dump Internet Explorer for a Mozilla browser before, by the same propeller-head geek who wants you to delete Windows from your hard drive and install Linux. You've ignored him, and good for you. [...]

But six years later, the surviving members of the Mozilla insurgency are staging a comeback. [...] all-conquering Internet Explorer has been stuck in the mud for the past year, as Microsoft stopped delivering new versions.

Joe and I were leaving my building two nights ago, and we overheard a conversation between two lawyers out front. I know both of them, and I can tell you that neither is a shining example of technical aptitude, yet we heard one of them tell the other "...your problem is that you're still using Internet Explorer...you should be using that Mozilla..."

This week I have to head over to my in-laws for the sixth or seventh time this year to cleanse their machine of all the unbelievable crud that IE allows to get in there. This time, they switch to Mozilla or I'm not coming back.

I don't mean to sound elitist and geeky, but if you're still using IE...why? (I am SO going to regret writing that...)

Google, the search engine company, won a federal court battle against Geico, the insurance company, today that allows the search engine to sell online advertisements tied to keywords that are also trademarked company names. Geico claimed that Google should not be allowed to display advertisements for rival insurance companies when the Geico name is used as a search keyword. U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema disagreed.

Gecko Feet might hold the key to inventing a self-cleaning adhesive. The super-sticky feet of geckos allow them to adhere to almost any surface. But even though geckos never groom their feet, they don't lose their sticking power over time. Why? Turns out they're self-cleaning. . Scientists hope to be able to use this knowledge to create new, better kinds of dry tape and adhesives, like "duct tape that never loses its stick or bandages that come off without sticky residue or an 'ouch.'" Research info is here, along with some gecko pics.

IE6 SP1 Small Image Loading Bug

IE6 SP1 Small Image Loading Bug 01/07/2004 04:37 PM

Ever since I installed IE6 SP1, I started seeing web pages with missing images.  Usually missing images were small in size but used multiple times in a page like the XML icon you see in my blogroll.  Well, I am seeing it now somewhat consistently after changing blog software.  I used to see it with permalink icon and day icon which is why I removed them yesterday.  Looks like I'll have to replace the XML icon with text.  Urgh.

Update:

I replaced the XML feed icon with CSS-based text anchor as Richard Soderberg suggested.  I did reduced the font size to 6px and adjusted the border colors because larger version was causing too much distraction.  It's still distracting but this will do until I replace the blogroll with something that takes up less space.  Thanks Richard.

09/03/2004 12:22 PM
The <a href="http://fastmac.com/products/processors/tl_imac.php" target="_blank">iMac Tray-Load G4/466MHz upgrade</a> from <a href="http://fastmac.com" target="_blank">FastMac</a> has a Motorola 450MHz G4 7400 processor running at 466MHz, an upgraded 1 MB backside cache, an AltiVec Velocity Engine and a 1 year limited (defect and workmanship) warranty. Though only beginning to sell its products under the FastMac name to consumers in 2003, the company has been creating and selling upgrade products for Macintosh computers since 1998. The upgraded machine was a Grape 333 MHz iMac with a recently upgraded 80 GB hard drive. Installing the FastMac processor upgrade is fairly straight-forward when following FastMac's provided instructions. After removing the cables it is advised that the computer be left for five minutes in order for the components to cool. Following the five minute wait, the next step was to remove the screws at the top of the logic board/mass storage chassis. That step was followed by disconnecting the audio, RGB, main power and IrDA cables, then removing the logic board/mass storage chassis. Later the processor card top shield was removed, then the heat sink clip and heat sink. The processor card was then removed from the logic board connectors by using the heatsink clip. An important piece of information to note when replacing the processor card is that it is important to firmly seat the processor in the logic board connectors, as the connectors are not located in the center of the board, pressure has to be applied in just the right spot for proper installation. If the processor card is not seated correctly (as I found out after putting all of the parts back together), the iMac will not boot. After the processor removal, the RAM was then transferred from the old card onto the new FastMac card, then the process was reversed. {_pic} The FastMac upgrade performed extremely well. After the processor upgrade, overall performance increased, with speeds nearly doubling that of the original processor. Booting Classic from OS X was about twice as fast, as well as ripping a song from CD, and exporting using Photoshop. Screen redraws were also faster and scrolling was quicker. The $199.95 upgrade might not be worth the price if there are any features offered in a new iMac or eMac that might catch your attention. To sell the old machine (for around $300) and then adding that amount to the money saved for <i>not</i> buying the processor upgrade ($199), would leave the purchaser with only spending an additional $300 to get a new <a href="http://www.apple.com/emac" target="_blank">1.25 GHz eMac</a>; a machine that is significantly better than the old iMac. eMac's offer the same all in one design of the 333 iMac but a new eMac would give an extra 2" of flat-CRT display area, a better resolution, faster processor, a combo drive, FireWire ports and a larger hard drive. Though the FastMac upgrade is an "incredible boost of speed and power, allowing you to enjoy the next generation of Macintosh products without burning a hole in your wallet," a small wallet hole might not be that bad if looking for a significantly better machine. For consumers who may not have the extra cash to spend on a new machine, the FastMac upgrade is a cost-effective way to upgrade a machine and is recommend if more processing power is needed.

Executing JavaScript on page load

Executing JavaScript on page load 05/26/2004 01:27 AM

Peter-Paul Koch recently wrote:

In my opinion, recent advances in JavaScript theory call for the removal of the event handlers that some Web developers-and all WYSIWYG editors-deploy in large masses in their XHTML files, where they don’t belong.

PPK is talking about inline event attributes such as the infamous onclick="" and onmouseover="" which have infested our HTML ever since Netscape introduced JavaScript back in version 2.0 of their browser. The alternative to these handlers is to add event handlers to elements after the document has loaded. PPK has detailed coverage of the various ways of doing this on his QuirksMode site.

In my work with unobtrusive JavaScript, I've found that by far the most common action I take is "registering" a script to be executed once the page has finished loading. There are a number of ways of doing this, which I described in my article E nhancing Structural Markup with JavaScript. Unfortunately, none of them are perfect if you wish to write truly reusable scripts.

For a script (such as my blockquote citations script discussed in the article) to be properly reusable, it needs to behave nicely in the presence of other scripts. This means that assigning a callback function directly to the window.onload handler is out of the question as doing so will over-ride previously assigned callbacks from other scripts. The correct way of adding a handler to an event without over-riding other handlers is to use modern event attachment method, which sadly differ between IE/Windows and other browsers. Scott Andrew's addEvent function handles the differences for you but comes with one major and rarely discussed drawback: it fails silently in IE5/Mac. If you care about the many Mac users still on OS9, you need to support that browser.

Anyway, I believe I've found a solution. Check this out:

function addLoadEvent(func) {
  var oldonload = window.onload;
  if (typeof window.onload != 'function') {
    window.onload = func;
  } else {
    window.onload = function() {
      oldonload();
      func();
    }
  }
}

addLoadEvent(nameOfSomeFunctionToRunOnPageLoad);
addLoadEvent(function() {
  /* more code to run on page load */
});

The addLoadEvent function takes as an argument another function which should be executed once the page has loaded. Unlike assigning directly to window.onload, the function adds the event in such a way that any previously added onload functions will be executed first.

The way this works is relatively simple: if window.onload has not already been assigned a function, the function passed to addLoadEvent is simply assigned to window.onload. If window.onload has already been set, a brand new function is created which first calls the original onload handler, then calls the new handler afterwards.

addLoadEvent has one very important property: it will work even if something has previously been assigned to window.onload without using addLoadEvent itself. This makes it ideal for use in scripts that may be executing along side other scripts that have already been registered to execute once the page has loaded.

I've tested the above code successfully on IE 5, 5.5 and 6 for Windows; IE 5 and Safari for Mac; Opera 7.5 and FireFox on Mac (which should mean it works with those browsers on Windows as well). Opera 6 for Mac failed the test but has poor JavaScript support anyway and is hopefully becoming more and more rare now that Opera 7 has matured.

I've created a test page for the function. I'd be interested to here any bug reports from browsers I haven't covered.

I'm still considering ways in which this technique could be extended to work for generic events rather than just page loads. The challenge there would be to ensure that information about the event itself was passed to the event handlers in a consistent manner. For page load events this isn't an issue as the event object does not contain any valuable information.

Update: I've written the new technique up on my SitePoint blog and incorporated an explanation of closures and how they are used to preserve any previously assigned onload handlers.

Upgrading Firebird to Firefox?

Upgrading Firebird to Firefox? 02/15/2004 05:25 AM
I've been debating about upgrading from Firebird to Firefox, the new Mozilla based browser, but have seen enough problem reports to decide to hold off until after this week's trip to Colorado. Plus, I'm not looking forward to reinstalling all my extensions -- 26 at last count. And the notice on the official Firebird extensions site,During periods of heavy use, the extensions are taken offline to help maintain a healthy, responsive server. Please check back later! For now, please use Extension Room.seems especially clueless. As far as I'm concerned, the whole point of Firebird / Firefox is the extensions. I also don't understand why Ben Goodger and the other developers are so opposed to the Tab Browser Extensions feature set? I understand that they have some problems with how the features are implemented, but to reject including or creating a better extension for some of the most popular features of Firebird / Firefox is nuts. I'd be curious to hear what other Firebird users' upgrade experiences have been....
