Why blacklists are a bad idea

Why blacklists are a bad idea

Why blacklists are a bad idea 03/15/2003 12:07 PM

I received a notification from our mailserver today that e-mails to one of our subscribers bounced because our server was in a "spam blacklist". We never send spam--I receive plenty of it and hate it enough--so I set out to investigate how this was possible. As it turns out, the server's ...

Open Relays and Spam Blacklists

Open Relays and Spam Blacklists 07/08/2004 02:22 PM

My business mail server got blacklisted the other day. We started getting consistent bounces from a couple of clients that referenced some odd site. A little poking around revealed that our mail server had been inexplicably identified as an open relay and was on a spam blacklist that the clients of this ISP subscribed to.

This, then, is a primer on open relays and spam blacklists for those that don't know what they are, and who may fall prey to the same problem we did.

Here's a site that's trying to "use up" the Republican's virtual space by reloading "several Republican websites" automatically every 60 seconds. See, if we all leave the protest page up in our browser, we'll show them Republican bastards ... well, I'm really not sure what we'll show them. I'm confused enough about this that I am only reluctantly posting the protest page's url: http://users.drew.edu/clotito/protest_rnc.htm. Maybe you can explain to me if this page is: 1. A sincere but misguided attempt to make a point no one understands through a protest that no one will notice 2. A devious attempt to...

Idea a Day - Where Ideas are Free
http://www.idea-a-day.com/

Idea a Day will publish an original idea every day for the rest of time. The ideas published will be free of copyright, however valuable they may be. They are there to be read, to be enjoyed, to be exploited. Whatever. The project represents a completely fresh approach to the handling of ideas and intellectual property. This is not a get rich quick scheme. There are no plans to float, no advertisers or sponsors lined up. idea-a-day.com exists because it can. Because it will be fascinating to see what happens when these ideas are made available to the world.

The national oil reserve should be converted into an instrument of market stabilization.  Currently, the US maintains reserves in place for times of war or severe supply disruption.  The US reserves should be refocused to become a service that sells oil to make up for any political/guerrilla induced production shortfalls.  This would require a much larger reserve (1 billion barrels is a target).  If Iraqi guerrillas reduce Iraq's production by 1 m barrels, the US should sell oil to make up the shortfall.  If Venezuela stops production due to political turmoil, replace their 2.5 m barrels a day.  The net benefit to the world from this over the last month?  ~$2-3 billion.

DRUMS, a new P2P idea 05/06/2004 01:03 PM

Scott Matthews, of turnstyle web mp3 player fame, has launched a new project called DRUMS. It's slighty inspired by Creative Commons and the goal is to create a P2P network that is fair to both copyright owners and folks seeking content. If you have something to add to his proposal, pop on over and drop Scott a line.

Apart from being smaller, it's styling is even better than the original iPod,... (370 words)

ObjectSpaces: What's the big idea? 03/06/2004 02:03 AM
Should your data become objects or your objects become data? That’s the debate. If you build apps focused around objects and just want those suckers persisted then you want your objects to become data. If you’ve got a database and you are building apps around that data using an object-oriented language you probably want your data to become objects. Which is more prevalent, I don’t know, probably the latter.

Dean's bad idea

Dean's bad idea 01/26/2004 12:40 PM
Declan reports on a bad idea put forward by Dean 15 months before he announced his run for the presidency (and six months after 9/11): Requiring users to insert an identity card — presented as an upgrade of today's drivers license — into a computer in order to log on. Apparently, the campaign is not responding to questions about this. It's certainly not an idea I've heard bruited about by the campaign, but I'm certainly not privy to every bruiting. Redmond Idea Factory just ran out of Gas

Redmond Idea Factory just ran out of Gas 07/21/2004 12:38 PM

Dana Blankenhorn raps it out....

Microsoft is out of ideas. (I liked this cartoon of Chairman Bill, from Hawaiian cartoonist John Pritchett.)

Microsoft spent the last year exploring lots of big business ideas. I even pitched Always-On to some Microsoft executives. In the end the company decided it had no worthwhile idea, so it's giving its profit back to shareholders.

Microsoft brings in $1 billion worth of free cash every month, and has set a $75 billion pay-out plan, including $30 billion in share buybacks. This is all in an effort to raise its stagnant stock price.

The result will be a higher price, but I guarantee you it will also mean a lower price-earnings ratio. Microsoft has decided to become a widows-and-orphans stock because it can't see any worthwhile way to invest its profits.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Because if Microsoft, with all the money in the world, can't thnk of anything better to do with its money than give it away, what does that say for the rest of us? What does it say for the technology business climate?

[Moore's Lore]

Sad - but true. It's up to US to prove Dana wrong!

One Small Idea At A Time

One Small Idea At A Time 08/02/2004 01:39 PM
While everyone is always looking for the "next big thing," companies are often making substantial improvements in how they do business by focusing on the small everyday improvements that come from employees. The article isn't talking about the traditional "employee suggestion box," but a more involved process that has employees feeling more free to suggest changes and brainstorm in the workplace. While most people realize that employee suggestions can be valuable, they don't necessarily build them into the culture of the company. The article notes that for all the talk about coming up with major changes, almost all of the major changes are pretty quickly copied by competitors. Smaller, incremental changes, however are more difficult to keep up with. As an example, they use the story of a furniture seller, who decided to equip all delivery staff with camera phones, to let them photograph any damage (or lack of damage, in case they're accused of damage later). Since then, employees have chipped in with even more useful ways to use those same camera phones, including getting advice from staff back at headquarters about tricky deliveries and for marketing purposes (to remember what someone bought). Meanwhile, we're still being told that camera phones are useless or should be banned? Given a chance to make use of them, employees are finding ways to make them ever more useful.
