Trash Talk Getting Life and Purpose 04/09/2004 04:00 PM
Well, the web's a funny place, isn't it? Just the other day, I posted my random idea about a trash talk virus for Mac OS X. You know, virus is probably the wrong word. It's more of an ad-hoc network entertainment application. But that's not the point. Anyway, within a matter of a day or so it got some interesting traction. First off, Ross suggested that it be used to help track down the folks who screw up wireless networks...

Mac OS X Virus Idea: Mac Trash Talk

Mac OS X Virus Idea: Mac Trash Talk 04/09/2004 04:00 PM
I've had this idea for a while and have only told one person so far. That means it's probably time to solicit feedback (or groans) from a larger audience on it. The intent is not to build a virus, but merely to think about what an amusing virus on the Mac might do--one that takes special advantage of the Mac OS X platform. It started out, like many ideas do, as the result of some idle brain time. For no...

Sunbeams, Trash Talk Edition

Sunbeams, Trash Talk Edition 06/21/2004 08:24 PM
Yow, DME cranked up the numbers at Planet Sun, so I got kind of buried when I went by there this morning; he’s got some interesting stats. Let’s open with a nasty political joke (the best kind). New today, a couple of Javaphone geeks speak up: Jeff Solof on the ultracoolness of Voice Connect and Hinkmond Wong on wireless snitching. For a side trip into philosophy, M. Mortazavi talks up Dreyfus’ On the Internet and makes it sound like a must-read. Finally, I hate it when life online veers into nastiness about personalities and politics and that kind of stuff, but hey, engineers are competitive, and I have no problem with a little my-tech-is-better-than-yours; so in this corner we have Eric Schrock seriously dissing Linux troubleshooting capabilities. I’m sure there’ll be someone in the other corner before too long.

The Incivility of Political Discourse in American Politics has reached unprecedented heights according to the August PQ Index (Political-sensitivity Quotient) released by The Global Language Monitor (www.LanguageMonitor.com). The PQ Index is a proprietary algorithm that tracks politically sensitive words and phrases in the media and on the Internet. Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Girlie Men,' Vice President Cheney's use of vulgarity, President Bush and Senator Kerry both being characterized as 'Liars!', Mrs. Kerry's rude directive to a reporter, and RFK, Jr's 'Fascist America' proposition highlight Top 10 for August. Off to Berlin

Off to Berlin 12/25/2004 04:49 PM

I'll off to Berlin in a few hours. I'm going to the 21st Chaos Communication Congress. I will be speaking about the Stat e of Emergent Democracy. (I am working on my talking points on my wiki.) I usually print out the conference schedule in case the immigration officer wants to know what I am going to be doing in their country, but I noticed that the schedule has stuff like: Lockpicking, Bluetooth Hacking, GameCube Hacking, Hidden Data in Internet Published Documents, Practical Mac OS X Insecurity, SAP R/3 Protocol Reverse Engineering... Maybe I won't carry a printout of this schedule after all. There is a How to Survive page on the wiki about how to lock down your computer for use on the network at the conference. Very good advice for anyone going to any conference with an open LAN, but a bit ominous when you are going to be a conference attended by a lot of serious hackers. I have tried feebly to prepare, but please be nice to me.

It looks like there will be a whole platoon of Wikipedians and some Croquet folks too. Lots of people I haven't seen for awhile as well. Looking forward to seeing everyone. See you soon on the other side.

ECHO Conference Berlin 04/21/2004 02:28 PM
I delivered a talk on Creative Commons's international efforts yesterday at the conference of European Cultural Heritage Online. The conference took place in the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, Germany. ECHO is an EU-funded collaborative research endeavour that provides support for scientific and cultural institutions in Europe that enrich cultural heritage through new technologies. Some of these partners (such as a state library in Lower Saxony specializing in Leibniz manuscripts dating from the 17th century or an online museum on the Fontana di Trevi) have articulated a strong interest in using the CC licences for making their collections digitally available. Thanks again to the Max Planck Institute for inviting us.

It was brought to my attention today that Yahoo is copyrighting the RSS feeds for those that are setting up Yahoo 360 accounts. Some are already refusing to use the service because in a sense Yahoo now owns your content.

This may be a oversight on Yahoo's part and I hope it is, I will probaly use their service anyway but probably not the blog portion and give them some time to answer these issues. [Yahoo 360 Copyrights Personal RSS Feeds]

Talking to Yahoo

Talking to Yahoo 04/14/2005 02:33 AM

I had a good talk yesterday with Jeff Weiner, Senior VP of Search and Marketplace over at Yahoo! I shouldn’t pass on what Jeff said; anyhow if he wants to talk to the world, he has a blog. But I can talk about what I said: first, Y! should be watching the Atom protocol work like a hawk, because they have two choices: either they try to beat everyone else out there and build the world’s greatest authoring tool, or they get behind a standardized protocol and let the cellphone guys and PDA people and let everyone compete to do it. Second, we were talking about improving search in general; near as I can tell, there isn’t a huge quality gap between Y!, Google, and MSN, and it’s hard to believe that any of them can sustainably get much ahead of the rest. On the other hand, I think Y! has a good chance to take on Google in the advertising space, both AdSense and AdWords, and maybe win. They know a whole lot of stuff about a whole lot of people; for example, they know my stock-market portfolio and what weather forecasts and maps I look up; they probably have more information about more individuals than anyone else in the business. On behalf of all those advertising sellers and buyers: it would sure be nice to see some competition. Maybe even some transparency.

The Wizards of OS conference coming on June 13 in Berlin will feature some very good speakers on copyright and copywrong, including my co-worker Wendy Seltzer.
Copyright law has become one of the most important and controversial drivers of the Information Society. The Internet has made every user a publisher, but copyright rules governing their activities are often determined by opaque international bodies that decide rules with little public input.

Join us in Berlin to debate where copyright should be going to ensure that authors, musicians, film-makers and the public will all benefit. Engage wih leading international thinkers from across Europe and the United States. Meet colleagues who are working to make sure all members of society benefit from copyright.

Attendance is free.
