Verizon to Expand EV-DO

Verizon to Expand EV-DO 09/23/2004 01:03 PM
Verizon Wireless said it will introduce its 3G service to 11 markets starting next week: In what appears to be a direct hit against Wi-Fi, Verizon also said it would launch its EV-DO service in 20 airports around the country. A recent report from TeleAnalytics showed that the use of Wi-Fi in airports has grown by more than 350 percent in a six-month period. It appears that Verizon is looking to capture a bit of that demand for wireless Internet access. However, its service still costs $80 a month while most Wi-Fi access charges are significantly less....

Ferry Wi-Fi to Expand

Ferry Wi-Fi to Expand 08/27/2004 01:31 PM
The trial deployment of Wi-Fi networks covering Puget Sound ferry routes will be expanded: The initial deployment covered one route, which Glenn trialed and covered for the New York Times. This fall, a couple of popular routes out of Seattle will get the service. The networks include a switch and APs from Chantry Networks. The ferry system expects to charge for the service and they can likely expect a good number of customers. Glenn reported that the boats that will initially have the service carry 12 million passenger trips per year. One of the routes, Seattle to Bremerton, is a 60 minute passage. Commuters who make the trip each day will likely be willing to pay to be productive during their two hours on the boat every day....

Google Looking to Expand? 09/03/2002 01:39 PM
SV Business Journal: Google eyes larger space. "Google Inc. has signed a letter of intent to occupy 190,000 square feet of office space in Mountain View with the possibility of expanding to 300,000 square feet in the future, according to industry sources. It is the largest proposed lease this year in Silicon Valley [...]" When I visited Google it was extremely crowded, so I'm not surprised they're picking up more space while it's cheap. Reuters: Google Hires CFO, Key Post for Growth. "The company hired George Reyes, 48, a former financial officer at Sun Microsystems Inc. At Sun, Reyes worked next to Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt, who was then the chief technology officer." These stories taken together, it does sound like somethings up over there....

Roaming Poised to Expand

Roaming Poised to Expand 11/06/2003 12:46 AM
The Wall Street Journal says T-Mobile near signing a roaming agreement (link good for 7 days): The article reports that roaming is starting to become an inevitability. I'm curious whether T-Mobile envisions a model in which there is fee settlement across networks, or it's free roaming. The TeliaSonera model cited in the article involves one bill, one account, but usage fees outside of the home network range of Finland and Sweden and certain TeliaSonera-operated hotspots in other Scandinavian countries. I stand by my prediction: within a year, all U.S. networks will have substantial inter-network roaming agreements that will allow unlimited usage by subscribers for $30 per month or less. The marginal but vital additional value of Wi-Fi will enhance cellular and landline businesses, and possibly that of wired ISPs, but it won't have the standalone value that some misguided souls believe it does today....
