The EStone Ripper is an in-dash CD player for your

It's Super Bowl Sunday, the Patriots are once again favored to win the
big game and iTunes fans everywhere are scouring convenience stores
and supermarkets for a 1-in-3 chance to win a free song with their
Pepsi.
Yep, if it wasn't for the 200,000,000 songs sold in the last 12
months, we’d be right back at square 1.
Since the last promotion with Pepsi, the iTunes Music Store has taken
off, adding more than a dozen affiliates and surpassing a daily rate
of more than a million songs a day. There are weekly free tracks,
music videos, digital box sets and NFL broadcasts, all under the same
roof as nearly a million songs.
And, it seems Apple has learned from the mistakes of last year's
promotion, which only yielded 5 million redemptions, a disappointing
dip on the road to that first elusive 100 million songs. For one, the
promotion has added an extra 100,000,000 songs and has been extended
until May 23.
Plus, Apple has sweetened the deal by giving away 1,704 iPods:
When you enter you Code for one free song credit at the iTunes Music
Store on or before 4/30/05, you will automatically receive one entry
into the Sweepstakes. Sweepstakes prize is an Apple iPod mini
(silver-colored case with the Pepsi logo)... Sweepstakes drawings to
take place daily 2/1/05 through 4/11/05, with one final drawing on
5/2/05.
All this, and not a single mention during the Macworld San Francisco
keynote presentation.
Perhaps this time, low-key is best, at least until Pepsi can supply a
stream of orange caps, anyway.
Or maybe subtlety. Over at Yahoo!, Apple has taken out its second ad
this week to advertise the new Pepsi promotion (the first promoted the
iPod shuffle). And the Super Bowl spots are far less controversial
(and far more effective). Other than that, you’d be hard-pressed to
find a mention outside of Apple's site.
The difference is simple: This year's promotion is not about hitting
any goals or spreading the word. It’s simply a way to thank the
millions of faithful iTunes users who have helped make it the most
popular download site in the world.
So enjoy the search, enjoy the commercial and (for the lucky 1,704)
enjoy your iPod minis.
And try not to think of all those dollars that could’ve been used to
promote the Mac mini…
