Companies Don't Have To Go Public

Companies Don't Have To Go Public 04/26/2004 03:41 AM

At the end of last week there was a flurry of articles from people talking about the rumors that Google would announce an IPO this week. We didn't post this because it's the exact same story that people have been running for months about how Google is probably going to need to disclose their financial info by Thursday. That was nothing new at all, but many people misinterpreted it to mean that Google would go public this week. At most, they might file to go public - which is quite different from actually going public. Even if they release the financial information as expected, it doesn't mean they have to go public, and some suspect that they'll stay private a while longer. While it's true that they'd be revealing the same info, there still wouldn't be the same pressure, because no one would be buying and selling their stock. Google seems to like being a private company, and while there's a lot of pressure to go public, that doesn't mean it will happen. One small note in the article was pretty interesting, though. It turns out that Google was actually structured as two separate companies (Google Inc. and Google Technologies) to keep them under the 500 shareholders financial reporting rule for as long as possible. Still, this whole debate brings up another annoying misconception that companies need to go public. While it is common, it is by no means necessary - and there are some very successful large companies that have stayed private and are quite happy in that position. Just like startups don't need to raise venture capital, established companies don't need to go public - and many execs who understand the downsides of being public are avoiding pressures to go the IPO route. Going public does give the company (and its shareholders) some liquidity, but that comes at a pretty steep price.

Chicago's public sculpture can't be

Chicago's public sculpture can't be
photographed by the public
02/07/2005 02:07 AM
Cory Doctorow: Chicago spent $270 million on its Millennium Park, placing a big public sculpture by Anish Kapoor in the middle of it, bought with public money. Woe betide any member of the public who tries to photograph this sculpture, though: it's a copyrighted sculpture and Chicago is spending even more money policing Chicagoans who try to photograph it and make a record of what their tax-dollars bought.

If I were them, I'd ask for my money back. What kind of jerk sculptor sells the city a piece of public art for a public park and then demands that no one take pictures of it? Christ, they should run this guy out of town on a rail and melt the goddamned sculpture down for scrap. Then they should fire the politician who signed a purchase contract that reserved the photographic rights and run him out of town on the same rail. Between the artist's greed and the procurement officer's malfeasance, this is about the vilest display of human venality I've heard of all day.

The copyrights for the enhancements in Millennium Park are owned by the artist who created them. As such, anyone reproducing the works, especially for commercial purposes, needs the permission of that artist.

06/09/2004 04:35 AM
Bridging the distance between the Hollywood film industry and the best new screenwriters across the country, the Nashville Screenwriters Conference announces its first National Screenplay Showdown. After six years of presenting the best writers and filmmakers in the entertainment industry at the Nashville Screenwriters Conference, the organization has teamed up with Ed Rugoff from the prestigious Chesterfield Writer’s Film Project to give aspiring screenwriters an opportunity to take their work west – all the way to Hollywood. The Showdown evaluates screenplays solely on the basis of story-telling ability, meaning that all genres have the same chance of winning. The winning screenplay writers will find themselves in front of the most prestigious literary agencies and management companies in consideration for representation. [PRWEB Jun 9, 2004]

VC Funded Companies Doing Well... But
Will They Keep Doing So?

While the VCs are whining about how much money they have, the companies they've put that money into are apparently helping to drive the economy forward. A new study has shown that venture backed companies have done much better during the downturn than non-venture backed companies, and actually added jobs during the period (well, what else were they going to do with all that VC money?). It's interesting to compare this to a different study that came out today, however, saying that most entrepreneurs aren't planning on hiring many new people over the next few years. You might be able to explain away the discrepancy by saying non-venture backed entrepreneurs are less likely to hire. That would make sense, since many non-VC backed entrepreneurial companies are small businesses that never need to hire many people. Still, the article seems to suggest they're talking about venture backed companies (many of whom are complaining they can't get cash out of VCs) in which case you could still explain away the difference by pointing out it's not a matter of how many companies are adding employees, but how many employees are added in total. If you have one company that adds 10,000 employees and ninety-nine that have only one employee and go out of business, a bunch of jobs are added even if most startups aren't involved.

Best Companies List
http://www.great placetowork.com/best/index.php

Each year, the Great Place to Work® Institute produces various Best Companies lists in the U.S. including Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For"® in America. They use the same selection methodology for the U.S. lists as for their over 20 international lists, including "Best Companies to Work for" lists in all 15 countries of the European Union, Brazil, Korea, and a number of other countries throughout Latin America and Asia. Companies are selected for the Best Companies lists primarily on the basis of their employees' responses to the Great Place to Work® Trust Index®, a proprietary employee survey developed by the Great Place to Work® Institute.
Further information used for selection to the list is provided by completion of the Great Place to Work® Culture Audit©, a two part management questionnaire, also developed by the Great Place to Work® Institute. They take pride in maintaining the highest level of integrity in their evaluation process. Great Place to Work® Institute and its media partners will only publicize information about companies that make the list and, in addition, only publicize positive aspects of each company. This has been added to Employment Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Ross notes that Newsgator got funded recently. There I noticed a trackback from rtwodtwo's posting: I never thought RSS programs would get VC’s cash. What do they think their exit will be? What revenue will this software have? Selling it to the warez loving public? Looking at its download.com count (<2000 downloads) the VC decision to invest looks very very strange. Well, I'm not sure what download.com has to do with this. RSS software isn't at the point yet where...

While he doesn't accuse all high-tech companies of focusing too much time and effort on technology and not enough on information, Eugene Kublanov nonetheless contends that some businesses do treat the "I" in IT with an unhealthy dose of indifference. As vice president of corporate development at neoIT, a San Ramon, Calif.-based firm that helps clients maximize their offshoring returns, Kublanov says that the transferring of information is one thing sometimes forgotten when companies implement technology.

Being Pitched by Technology Companies 08/27/2004 01:52 PM

I get in my inbox on a daily basis a dozen or so pitches from companies looking to have their product pitched. My response always is send me the item and let me keep it and I will write up a review. The software guys are happy to do this, but not the hardware people. I guess we don't have a big enough readership to warrant being given hardware to test.

I am not surprised others are getting the same pitches. I would be interested in seeing if anyone is scoring any cool hardware. After all if I am going to pitch a product you can be sure I have used it and will be giving you all the plus and minuses of the product in question. [Loosewire]
