NeoOffice 1.1 Beta Patch-9 (Java branch)

NeoOffice 1.1 Beta Patch-9 (Java branch) 03/22/2005 03:57 PM
Screenshot NeoOffice is a project that is developing a native Mac OS X port of OpenOffice.org with an Aqua look-and-feel. The Cocoa branch (NeoOffice/C) is no longer under development. The Java/Carbon branch (NeoOffice/J) is under active development and is stable enough for daily use. It provides the foundation upon which the user interface can be redesigned to adhere to the conventions of the Aqua Human Interface Guidelines.
Changes:
This release contains fixes for the text kerning bugs and also contains native menubar performance improvements. In previous patches, it could take up to 10 seconds for the menubar to display a menu in some cases. This patch has reduced that time to only a second or two. This patch also includes a number of other bugfixes.

The Java/Carbon branch (NeoOffice/J) is under active development and is stable enough for daily use. It provides the foundation upon which the user interface can be redesigned to adhere to the conventions of the Aqua Human Interface Guidelines.
Changes:
This release contains a significant new feature: drag-and- drop between Neo/J and other applications. This patch also includes bugfixes for slow text drawing speed, restoring it to pre-Patch-8 levels, and the autocomplete feature, which correctly works with accented characters and no longer overwrites them.

It provides the foundation upon which the user interface can be redesigned to adhere to the conventions of the Aqua Human Interface Guidelines.
Changes:
Neo/J now behaves more like other Mac applications and will not quit when you press the red "close window" button on the last document window. A text copy and paste bug has been fixed. There is better text kerning. Floating windows always stay on top. For full details, see the changelog.

Java SQL Admin Tool 2.0.2 released

Java SQL Admin Tool 2.0.2 released 07/01/2002 08:30 AM
Admin is entirely written in Java. It uses Swing GUI Components and JDBC to connect to databases. It has been succesfully tested with MySQL, InstantDB, Oracle, and PostgreSQL. You can have a tree view of the RDBMS or pick a single instance to have a look at its metadata. It allows you to create, modify, and drop tables and to create indices on a table. The dynamic form makes it easy to enter data into a certain table, and the guided query makes it easy to retrieve data from a table and to export it. Java developers will probably enjoy the code generator doing an OO relational wrapper and a swing GUI for them. You can also export and import data and transport it from one DBMS to another.

java.util.concurrent for Java 1.4

java.util.concurrent for Java 1.4 12/19/2004 03:06 PM

One of the shiniest new feature of Java 5.0 (aka Java 1.5) is a rich set of concurrent programming classes in java.util.concurrent (aka JSR 166), much of which is a direct port of Doug Lea's Concurrent Programming in Java library.  Since I don't have the luxury of using Java 5.0 yet, I've resorted to using Doug's original library which is, for the most part, functionally equivalent to java.util.concurrent but not close enough for comfort, particularly since concurrency code tend to be very sensitive to minor changes.

The good news is that Dawid Kurzyniec backported java.util.concurrent package to run under Java 1.4 and made it available as open source.  Apparently Sun is letting this happen because it's own code is based on Doug's open source library.

There are some shortcomings but nothing much to cry over.  My only complaint is that it doesn't use the java.util.concurrent package name which means I'll have to update the package names later (simple but still change nonetheless).  But that I can see the technical and legal issues preventing that from happening.  I am just glad someone did this.
