Music licensing and American Idol

Music licensing and American Idol 05/26/2004 03:25 PM

The New York Times published an article about how the music industry influences song choice on American Idol today. I've long suspected that contestant song choice was limited to what the show could afford to pay in licensing costs ahead of time, since the choices of songs to cover seem limited. A producer of the show is quoted heavily stating that many songs are off-limits due to audience preferences and style, but does let slip that any songs by Michael Jackson, The Beatles, and Shania Twain are completely off-limits to the show. That's disappointing, since MJ and the Beatles are cultural icons, both selling one of the top ten music albums of all time.

Historically, there's always been some legal leeway to allow for cover songs, though as this musician found out, the process can be a lengthy one to get the rights to everything you want to record.

MP3.com Execs To Continue Licensing
Music

MP3.com Execs To Continue Licensing
Music
01/06/2004 02:34 PM
While Vivendi Universal sold off the MP3.com domain name to CNET, they didn't sell much else of the business. Now, some former MP3.com execs have picked up some of the other MP3.com assets to continue an offering that was started in 2002 to license music online for use in places like offices and retail environments. It lets subscribers put in their own advertisements or announcements as well. So, the next time you're walking through the department store listening to the muzak that's playing, realize it may be coming from MP3s. Of course, now that MP3.com destroyed their database of songs, I wonder what music they're licensing out. The article claims the company also bought the licenses to a number of songs, but it sounds like they'll have to create a brand new database to use them. They also say they're going to sign deals with major labels to offer their music as well.

The Jobs Uniform

The Jobs Uniform 10/28/2003 11:06 PM
The Austin American-Statesman takes a gander at the Steve Jobs's uniform of black mock turtleneck, jeans, sans belt.
"What he wears says a great deal about the way he feels and thinks about computers," says Ruth Rubinstein, a professor of sociology at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, who discussed Jobs' famed outfit in her 2000 book "Dress Codes: Meanings and Messages in American Culture" (Westview Press). "He believes the computer can really revolutionize the world and his philosophy is all about democracy and sharing."
...
"It's kind of clerical work for him. . . . I think the outfit is very much a clerical outfit. He's not doing it for show."
Quite cute-in-an-"E! Exclusive"-sort-of-way.
