S.D. Library Web Site Controversy

S.D. Library Web Site Controversy 07/13/2004 03:44 PM

S.D. governor pulls plug on part of library Web site: Our governor, Mike Rounds, ordered some links removed from the youth section of the South Dakota State Library Web site this week because they linked to "inappropriate content." The governor's office isn't identifying the links, but sources say they were links to Planned Parenthood.

It's not censorship, Rounds said, because people can still see the content by going directly to the sites. Others will have to wait until state officials decide whether the sites are appropriate to be linked from a state page, he said.

People are upset.

"The governor is not the master father of the state of South Dakota," said Judith Krug, director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom. "At least I don't think he was elected on that basis."

I saw a group of people protesting outside the public library in downtown Sioux Falls yesterday. At the time, I didn't know what they were asking people to honk for. I didn't honk, just in case the signs read, "Honk if you're an eff-ing moron." That's happened to me once before.

Stargate fan-site operator busted under

07/26/2004 03:50 PM
The creator of an SG-1 fansite has been charged by the FBI with criminal copyright infringment, the result of an investigation that involved a USA PATRIOT Act warrant against the site's ISP to gather intelligence. The Feebs confiscated and then destroyed his personal computers, returning their remains months later. All this comes after several of the show's cast and creators have made a special point of saying how much they liked the site. The site owner lives in Ohio, but has been charged in LA and needs money to get to the coast and defend himself; they're raising money through t-shirt sales and could use your help.
Adam was first tipped off about the investigation when the FBI raided his and his fiancee's apartment in May of 2002 and seized thousands of dollars worth of computer equipment. Adam later received a copy of the affidavit filed in support of the search warrant, and was shocked to discover that this document, prepared by the FBI, contained significant amounts of erroneous and misleading information. For example, two social security numbers were listed for Adam, one of which is not his. References were made to a cease and desist letter sent by the MPAA to an email address that did not exist. His online friendship with other Stargate fans across the globe was portrayed as an international conspiracy against the MPAA. And perhaps most disturbing of all, it was later revealed that the FBI invoked a provision of the USA Patriot Act to obtain financial records from his ISP. The FBI's abuse of its powers did not stop there. When they seized Adam's computer equipment, he was given written documentation stating that it would be returned within 60 days. The equipment that they did return did not arrive until more than 8 months later, and only then after much prodding from his lawyer. Much of it was damaged beyond repair - one laptop had a shattered LCD screen, an empty tape backup drive was ripped apart for no apparent reason, his fiancee's iBook was badly damaged when it was pried apart with a screwdriver. The FBI's computer crimes staff is either incompetent (at least when it comes to Macintosh computer equipment) or else they just don't give a damn.

States Move Forward With Pointless
Anti-Competitive Dating Site Law

States Move Forward With Pointless
Anti-Competitive Dating Site Law
03/28/2005 06:33 PM
Last month, there was a story about how some online dating site that claims to do background checks on its members (though, they don't actually check to make sure the person is who they say they are) was trying to get state politicians to pass laws requiring such checks or force other dating or social networking sites to put a huge notice saying: "WARNING: WE HAVE NOT CONDUCTED A FELONY-CONVICTION SEARCH OR FBI SEARCH ON THIS INDIVIDUAL." This law is obviously completely pointless other than to try to make life difficult for the competition of this one tiny dot com dating site. However, it appears that a number of clueless politicians are buying it, and just such a law is moving forward in a number of states, with Michigan leading the way. What's amusing (though, in other ways, scary) is the rationale one of the Michigan sponsors is giving: "There are inherent dangers in the whole area of the Internet. Something needs to be done." This seems like a fairly typic al political response. Something isn't perfect, so a law must be passed -- even if it will have no impact and (if anything) likely make the situation worse, not better. Of course, for the dating site that is pushing all of these laws, it's only going to backfire on them if the law passes -- because then those other sites will start doing background checks, and this site will lose its one tiny, pointless differentiating factor. You have to wonder if they pushed for the legislation with the belief that there was no way it would pass -- but they were likely to get some press out of it. Now what will they do if it actually does pass?
