People have been saying it for ages, it hasn't changed the short-term thinking of many carriers. Locking mobile phones, both for switching the phone itself to a new carrier and in terms of what applications can go on that phone, is bad for business. The carriers are taking an "operator knows best" strategy to the market, where only they can possibly know what you might want to do with the phone. They're discouraging innovative applications, since only they can approve them. They're discouraging innovative uses, since people can't discover for themselves what the phones may be useful for. They're slowing down adoption by making the phones less useful. The short term thinking, of course, is that they want control. They want control over whether or not you leave them for a competitor, or whether or not you leave their for-fee service and applications for others. However, they're not serving their customers. Customers want open systems. Open systems encourage innovative uses that drive demand. Opening up the phones and opening up the platforms provides carriers with more opportunities to profit, by allowing customers to find even more useful things they can do with the phone. One of these days, maybe the decision makers will get the message. The article linked here talks about a lawsuit to force carriers to open up -- but no matter what the outcome of the lawsuit is, it's in the carriers' own best interests to open up and provide customers with the opportunity to make mobile phones much more useful.

It's more vaporware: cell phone billing for hotspot usage for hotspots that don't exist: Over the last year, four Canadian cellular telephone carriers have made deals for inter-network roaming, issued press releases, and most recently said that Wi-Fi usage could be billed directly to a cell phone account. Of course, the carriers haven't built a single hotspot, and the leading Canadian firm FatPort already offers a variety of billing and roaming options. FatPort has partnerships for bilateral roaming with other networks worldwide, including Surf and Sip. Their locations are resold via iPass, GRIC, and Boingo. They work with Excilan to allow certain cell customers to pay via cell phone for their service already. All this to say that the cell companies in Canada are offering a lot of noise for no results. Their promise to build 500 locations by the end of 2004 might be impeded by the locations and chains already under contract to FatPort and to companies to which FatPort has licensed their technology or for which FatPort is operating networks. The article also incorrectly states that hotspot users have to enter a credit card each time, disregarding the many subscription plans and pre-paid card options offered by FatPort in Canada and other hotspot networks worldwide. I know the Globe and Mail is a major daily newspaper, but this article was written by proxy by the cell carriers who told the reporter exactly what to think--note the paucity of quotes and none from companies outside the partnership. Not long ago, notebook computers were expensive accessories for traveling executives. Now, it's not a surprise to find many choices priced under $1000. A recent check of Web stores found major vendors offering notebooks on the cheap (aka "inexpensive," as the companies that sell them would prefer). IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Dell are all offering portable models for under $750.

Forrester Research analyst Simon Yates isn't surprised. "Notebooks between $800 and $1000 are becoming prevalent," he says, which makes the $750 price not entirely out of line. Yates sees this as "the result of a willingness--or lack thereof--[by consumers] to pay more than $1200 for a PC." If you really hunt for bargains, they can get even better. Last year, Gartner Group analyst Martin Reynolds bought a new notebook for his father that, after rebates, cost less than $500.

I'm a reasonably frequent visitor to my parents' house in Bethesda, Maryland.  Mom and Dad are both Harvard graduates and consequently have little trouble recognize the utter worthlessness of something developed to a large extent at MIT, i.e., the Internet.  There is thus no high-speed Internet connection in their house and their neighbors apparently share the belief that Internet is not worth paying for because there are no wireless networks from which to steal.

Frustrated at having to drive to a friend's or sibling's house every time I wanted to check the weather or email, I signed up for an $80/month Verizon data card.  Washington, D.C. area is one of its flagship service area, promising "typical speeds of 300-500 kbps, capable of reaching speeds up to 2 Mbps".  Getting the PC 5220 card to work at all required a couple of calls to Verizon tech support, which, unlike Vonage and Lingo, involved minimal hold times and knowledgeable staff.  I needed to download a newer version of some software, which, of course, required an Internet connection...

How does it work?  The average throughput on the "broadband" network here in D.C. has been 50-100 kbps at most.  The software shows that at one point this computer achieved a peak rate of 450 kbps but there are long dropout periods when the rate is 0 kbps.  Most distressing, the service only lasts for 10-30 minutes, after which time this supposedly "always-on" service turns you off and you have to manually disconnect and reconnect to get back on.  Sometimes the software is smart enough to notice that you are disconnected and a little box comes up in the bottom right of your screen noting the fact of the disconnection.  Underneath the note are the words "Verizon: We never stop working for you (R)".

On balance the service is somewhat similar in feel to a 56 kbps modem except that you never know if that 3-second wait for a Web page is going to turn into 60 seconds because you've been silently dropped from the network.

Using Windows XP it is sometimes necessary to reboot the machine in order to switch from 802.11b to Verizon or vice versa.

Verizon is announcing plans to spend $1B US in the next two years to develop a wireless broadband network that will offer 300-- 500K speeds at $79.99 a month, starting this summer.

The network, which will use third-generation or "3G" technology provided by Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO), will be fast enough to allow consumers to download video and music as well as send video messages. The high-speed network, called BroadbandAccess, will be available to businesses and individual customers beginning in the summer of 2004.
