The OVAL Definition Interpreter tests a system for vulnerabilites described using the XML- based Open Vulnerability Assessment Language. The interpreter is a host-based tool that can test vulnerabilities inaccessible to network-based tools, and can often test vulnerabilities more accurately than a network-based tool.
Changes:
The XML schemas were updated to version 4.0, tightening integration between vulnerability, results, and system configuration schemas.

Video Game TV Shows

Video Game TV Shows 12/17/2003 02:29 PM
Now that video games are becoming more like professional sports it should be no surprise that a whole bunch of television programs involving video gaming are set to hit the tube. There have been a few such shows that have come on in the last year or so, but now they're going to be everywhere. It seems to be part of the battle of TV execs to combat the fact that more and more people are playing video games rather than watching TV. So, they figure they'll just throw up some programming that involves video games and hope it works.

Alias: The Video Game

Alias: The Video Game 04/15/2004 07:38 PM

'Alias' takes on the gaming world: I'm not a big gamer, but this could temp me to start.

The main character — agile, clever and impossibly beautiful superspy Sydney Bristow (played by the agile, clever and impossibly beautiful actress Jennifer Garner) — could easily hold her own with the gallery from "Mortal Kombat."

Add in the fact that "Alias" and its epic, sometimes shocking sometimes schmaltzy storylines can be as engrossing as "Metal Gear Solid," one can convincingly argue that "Alias" is really just a video game that happens to come on your TV every Sunday night.

Apparently Marshall plays a prominent role. As it should be.

If IKEA was a video game

If IKEA was a video game 01/25/2004 12:51 PM
Treating spousally mandated IKEA visits as a video-game seems like a pretty good coping strategy, especially when you've got a walk-through to crib from. This is a screamingly funny piece from The Morning News.
You start this world armed only with a UNIVERSAL FURNITURE-ASSEMBLY ALLEN WRENCH. This is the weakest weapon in IKEA: You will have to hit a person 16 times with it to kill them. So your primary goal in this level is to find more lethal means of dispatching your enemies.

As you enter the SHOWROOM, perform a rolling dodge to the left. Grab a free PAPER TAPE MEASURE and a handful of IKEA EMBLAZONED GOLF PENCILS from the kiosk near the entryway. The PENCILS serve quite well as ranged weapons, but it will take some time to master their use. Before venturing further in the world, stand at the kiosk and practice hurling GOLF PENCILS at patrons as they enter the SHOWROOM. Remember: Hitting the eyes does triple damage.

The Video Game That Broke Apart China

The Video Game That Broke Apart China 05/28/2004 03:20 PM
Who said video games can't change the world? That seems to be the fear of the Chinese government, who has banned the video game "Hearts of Iron" for (they claim) "distorting history and damaging China's sovereignty and territorial integrity." To be honest, I don't know enough about the video game in question or the specific complaints concerning Chinese history to understand what their specific problems are (and the article is somewhat vague), but, honestly, who could possibly feel threatened that the events in a historical video game could damage a nation's sovereignty? If one little video game can damage both the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a nation, you have to wonder how strong those things are in the first place.

Nutcase wants to sue because he has same
name as video game character
03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Cory Doctorow: A guy who has the same name as a character in a Blair Witch video game is making crazy lawsuit threats against a gamer news-site because when you google his name, you get information about the game -- and he's sad because people think he's a nutcase!
My name is Robert MacNichol and this name is coming up on the Blair Witch Vol. II site at:

http://gr.bolt.com/games/codes/pc/blairwitch_vol2_coffin_walk.htm

I'd like some explination as to how this happened. I want my name off your public domain and diconnected with anything relating to your business. Please advise Rob...

Thank you. I'm wondering if my name shows up on some NAMBLA site---which I won't even click on out of curiosity. I got a couple of lawyers--I know--looking into it now. Usually they say forget it. not yet on this one. You're probably on track when you imply I can shove it if I don't like it. I got a scathing bunch of e-mails calling me a whack job because this popped up when someone typed in my name. Damned embarrasing. I wasn't threatening to sue. I was asking for some solution other than that. If I do. And if I win big--hahahahahahahahaha!--I'll remember you and the site...and your pointer about reality. Someone got rich when they spilled a cup pf coffee in there lap at McDonalds. I ought to be able to get my name off a whack site don't you think? My favorite all time game was River Raid by Atari(?) as I recall. The only other one I like is Pong , oh! and Brick Attac k--on my cell phone. I know a lady who "became" a witch. Blair Witch wadda .... wadda.... I can't even think of the term. The VN thing is me. A Canadian liblosrer? Naw. Helen who? I get your point...never the less wish me luck. I may be paving new ground on the WWW.

Addictions

We've seen plenty of stories about psychologists claiming there was a problem with people being "addicted to video games", but now some actual research is being done, and one psychologist is saying that video games are no more addictive than school or work. That is, unlike alcohol or drugs, there's no chemical dependency issue - it's a self-created addiction. However, plenty of video game players describe themselves as addicted, and that's good enough for many psychologists - who point out that self-described video game addicts often end up having "family conflict and romantic failure as a result of their hobby." Of course, one could claim that the family conflict or romantic failures made the person retreat more into the video game - or even that both the problems and the excessive video gaming were caused by a third factor. However, it's probably just easier for psychologists to bring in new business by claiming video game "addiction" causes all the problems.
