Dale Fuller, president and CEO of Borland, has been with the company since 1999, when it had temporarily been renamed Inprise. Recently, the company has been touting its ALM (application lifecycle management) strategy and efforts to provide for a unified, manufacturing-like structure for software development projects. InfoWorld Editor-at-Large Paul Krill spoke with Fuller at the BorCon conference in San Jose, Calif., last week about Borland's tools and ALM strategies and issues such as Java vs. .Net, Web services, and outsourcing.

A recent article by Richard Stallman on the subject of the direction of the Free Software community provoked a lot of discussion, in particular on whether he is right to push so strongly his principles of Free Software over and above the pragmatic principles of Open Source. In this article I would like to defend Stallman's vision of software, and its place in community rather than as a consumer product, and re-advocate Stallman's assertion that the right to form a community is more important than the ability to use particular software.

According to the TIOBE Programming Community Index (updated once a month) PHP is not only the most popular module for the Apache Webserver but also one of the most popular programming languages. With the highest "Delta 1 Year" (indicates the changes in ratings for the last 12 months) and "Status A" (denotes mainstream languages), PHP is growing fast, really fast!! Can the open source community beat
software patenters?

Patents and the threat they pose to open source and overall software innovation are a hot topic, but patents may not be a useful weapons against a community that works with, ardently supports, and defends open source with money, time, and expertise.

The Free Software Community After 20
Years: With great but incomplete
success, what now?
01/05/2004 08:34 AM
It was twenty years ago today that I quit my job at MIT to begin developing a free software operating system, GNU. While we have never released a complete GNU system suitable for production use, a variant of the GNU system is now used by tens of millions of people who mostly are not aware it is such. Free software does not mean "gratis"; it means that users are free to run the program, study the source code, change it, and redistribute it either with or without changes, either gratis or for a fee.

Due Process, or No Process: Rule of Law
at Stake
04/20/2004 09:57 AM
Our government insists that it can kidnap a foreign national overseas and hold him forever in a Guantanamo jail, or put him through a military trial and even execute him. Oh, the government has made a few cosmetic concessions to law in its plans for military tribunals. But note that these are unilateral changes and can be withdrawn at any time. Our government also insists that U.S. citizens can be declared enemy combatants and tossed into jail forever, or tried by military tribunals (and maybe executed), without access to a lawyer or the courts. If the court endorses this, it's endorsing despotism.

It lists the inode numbers of all the files, opened by that process.
