We Need To Regulate TiVos Now?
We Need To Regulate TiVos Now?
01/05/2004 05:30 PMWhat is it with uncreative business model suggestions today? First we
had Lester Thurow saying the music industry has
no
business model without copyright enforcement and now (found over
at
New Media Musings) is this story that an analyst at Sanford
Bernstein actually thinks that
TiVo and TiVo-like
devices should be regulated - to
force people to watch
commercials. He claims that this is the "only way" to save the
broadcast TV industry. Yes, and the only way to save the horse and
buggy industry is to force people to walk in front of automobiles
waving a lantern (as was the
law
in some places). It makes sense for the entrenched interests -
but makes little sense for consumers. What happens instead, is that
old business models become obsolete, and new ones come in and take
their place. That's business.

People Line Up For Free TiVos
12/19/2004 03:47 PMAs
expec
ted , thousands of people
showed up TiVo
headquarters to get their free TiVo today. The company had 2,000
to give out, and about 2,500 people showed up. The remaining 500
received $50 off coupons... that expire tonight. Of course, none of
these people got free service, so TiVo might want to pay attention to
how many of those now go sign up for service and start to do the math
about how many more service users they would have if they simply gave
the boxes away, rather than clinging to their efforts to recoup the
expense of the box.

Let the whining begin!
05/14/2004 12:13 PMThough I suppose it's well past that time. SixApart announced the new
licensing scheme for Movable Type 3.0. I'd figured something was
coming down the pike reasonably soon--given their setup there wasn't
any way they could sustain their development and actually have people
eat. And, while the new prices seem more than a touch high, well...
hell, it's their code, they can do what they want with it. The part I
haven't been looking forward to isn't the cost, but rather the
inevitable whining. Boy, has there been whining. Most of it has been
"Oh, this software which I have...

Tax - Let the bureaucracy begin'
Various departments of Japan’s government are toying with the
idea of a Wi-Fi tax. As insane as this sounds, their government
believes that this makes sense because other wireless device
manufacturers as well as users pay for spectrum licenses. With this in
mind, the logic follows that the Wi-Fi equipment makers should also be
taxed as well….

05/17/2004 10:38 AMI spent a chunk of this weekend working on the Pie-thon conversion

whether it's as a record of success or abject failure, so we just
won't go there right now :) I figure I ought to note down what's going
on--it's not like it'll make much difference one way or the other with
the contest, so there's no harm as I see it. There's also a new

End the FCC, begin innovation
06/07/2004 02:14 PMI try not to fall for Declan's grandstanding, but his piece on why the FCC should
die is spot on.
What it means is returning to bottom-up law rather than
the top-down process that has characterized telecommunications for the
last 80 years.
Maybe it's the programmer in me talking but I think the Internet
and unlicensed wifi spectrum show that unregulated spaces produce the
most innovation and create new markets for technology and information.
In many ways, the FCC has spent the last few decades slowing
technology progress and most recently is now in the censorship game,
which doesn't make any sense at all.
