Friedman quotes a former Swedish prime minister. "Our defining date is now 1989 and yours is 2001," I find this to be true. For most of the 90's, the US struggled to find a new purpose for its power. A few peace-keeping missions, a skirmish in Iraq (the first time), but for the most part, no real global strategy. Europe, on the other hand, has made significant progress with developing the EU, the euro (which no one believed would ever come about so quickly), and a semi-unified policy concerning the rest of the world (GB being the notable exception). The Rise Of Second Degree Spam

The Rise Of Second Degree Spam 11/17/2003 01:57 PM
While the Direct Marketing Association continues to push for a definition of spam that would make only fraudulent emails spam, they seem to be ignoring the fact that most spam is defined simply as "emails I don't want" - whether legitimate or not. And, under that real world definition, more and more spam is coming from so-called "legitimate" sources. People are starting to call this email "second degree spam". It's not unsolicited, because the receiver signed up at one point or another, but the company delivering the marketing messages has done nothing to make those emails relevant - and thus, in the user's eye, they're no different than spam. The marketers seem to be ignoring this because they think it's to their benefit. They're wrong. The more that lazy marketers simply blast people with irrelevant emails just because they think it's okay that someone "opted-in", the less people will pay attention to these emails. If they actually focused on customizing the messages and providing what people wanted without inundating them with useless stuff, they might actually get a good return. Unfortunately, it's easier to be lazy and use a "scorched earth" policy of blasting out as many messages as possible - even if it will only work to destroy email as a marketing mechanism.

A Bachelor's Degree in Disinterest

A Bachelor's Degree in Disinterest 11/22/2002 02:34 PM
I've added Bitworking.org to the Outside Reading, a site I've been to before but found again today while traversing the recommended reading area at DiveIntoMark (which contains many more links to worthy reading). This quote really got my attention: "...I really don't care about people using Netscape 4. As a matter of fact if I could find a sequence of tags that would cause NN4 to do nasty stuff like erase your hard-drive or shoot lightning out of screen when viewing this site I would gleefully add them." I have to agree on principle that if you are using Netscape Navigator version 4 still, you have to get with the times and upgrade to a suitable browser. I understand that some corporations still mandate NN4's use for some unknown reason, and for people in that dilemma, I offer this handy link. I really wanted to attend Web Design World in Boston this week, but a combination of price and the college thing kept me away. I wanted to see Jeffrey Zeldman and peers speek, and spend time participating in what I am interested in. The latter part of that sentence is my main source of grief. My participation in this web design community has really been passive lately; there have been few opportunities at college. My greatest (scholastic) fear is that I will spend four years of undergraduate study writing C++ programs for class and finessing the web in my spare time, when ideally for me these two roles would be reversed. That being said I do have hope for the future. The Interactive Telecommunications Program, a graduate level program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, looks promising for those people interested in online and, more generally, interactive media. If anyone has any experience with this program, send me your thoughts.

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek 09/20/2004 02:53 AM

My wife and I went to a work related party last night which turned out to be pretty boring. So much for the $70.00 spent on tickets. We left early and knew that the sitter was good to go decided to drop in on a friend of hers.

We get to her house and I am admiring her house and see a big Master Degree in Education hanging over her computer. I was surprised to see it actually as we have known her for a while and she had never mentioned it. Anyway to make a long story short she says hey my PC is having problems can you look at it.

You guessed it 2 hours later and much under breath cursing I give up and tell her I need to take it home or we can just pull the restore disk out and start from scratch. I get this deer in the headlights look when I explain that her computer has been hijacked and is infected with nearly every piece of spyware known to man.

1. Virus Definitions 2 years old
2. She had never run Windows Update.
3. Systems is plugged directly into cable modem
4. No Spyware detection software
5. No Firewall

Remember now she has a Masters Degree in Education. She commented I should open a business and fix peoples computers like hers. I guess my 21+ years working with advanced electronics now makes me qualified to fix computers. I suppose I could charge her $750.00 for a days worth of work. All I could do was smile and say drop it by the house and I will get it fixed for you...

All my wife could say when we left was sorry. I hate stupid educated people. Sometimes being a geek sucks.

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek
problems
09/21/2004 06:38 AM

The building I work in does not receive Radio receptions real good. The guys and I in the office like to listen to a particular radio show and we knocked our heads together for a while trying to figure out how to improve the reception. Fixing the reception problem proved to be impossible but we did find a geeks way to fix the problem.

I purchased Replay Radio and set it up at home to record the network stream of the program. It saves the recorded stream in MP3 format every 30 minutes and dumps it in a directory that I have mapped to a FTP server. I have a standard FTP client running on my desktop that downloads the MP3 to my laptop which is connected to the network and we load the MP3 up and listen to the program time delay.

My work does not allow for streaming audio. So to avoid confusion I asked permission to do this via our IT department and promised to keep the file sizes under control. They thought it was cool and gave the thumbs up. It worked out so well that several departments do the same thing and we have 2-3 national talk radio programs to listen to each day. Albeit time delay but it works. [Replay Radio]

" Replay Radio is an incredibly easy way to record radio broadcasts. It's like a "TiVo™ DVR" for the radio. Just pick your favorite radio show, or select a station and a time range, and Replay Radio records it for you. Hundreds of shows and stations are pre-programmed, making recording as easy as point and click."

Spider-Man didn't impress me much. DareDevil seemed too short. The only super thing in Superman III was the computer at the end of the movie. X2 was almost close to okay. I haven't seen LXG yet - and we'll see how wellPunisher fares. I didn't have much hope for Hulk, but... it's about the only one I've been impressed with so far. We found a used 2-DVD set for $10 at Blockbuster the other day - and the package is definitely worth twice that amount. The cinematography is fantastic, the special effects are realistic, and the story is well balanced. Give it a spin if you haven't already. I hear the game is just as good, too....

Israel's nanotech-powered superhero

Israel's nanotech-powered superhero 03/28/2005 01:16 PM
David Pescovitz: Over at the NanoBot, Howard Lovy introduces us to Israel's first "nanotechnology-powered" superhero, The Golem. The superhero stars in a new daily comic strip hosted on Ynetnews.
Golem Howard writes: Golems are clay creatures of Jewish legend brought to "life" by rabbis who can master the correct Kabbalistic incantations. Mary Shelley was said to have been inspired by them when she created Frankenstein. The most famous of these Jewish Frankensteins was the 17th century Golem of Prague, created out of clay and brought to life with one word, "emet" ("truth"), placed on its forehead by Rabbi Jehudah Loew...

Since then, the golem has come to symbolize how the "creations" of man can go horribly wrong. I wonder if this comic's creators are aware that if they are to stay true to the golem legends their superhero must ultimately fail. The moral of the Jewish myth is that it is dangerous for mankind to "play God," or to "alter nature" by giving life to clay...

In this modern version, it's government bureaucracy that goes awry. The first comic begins with Professor Finstein's "Israeli Super Hero Project" about to become the victim of budget cuts. He convinced the government to build it using "these very small appliances," which turned out to be nanobots, of course. What he did not say was that he neded "67 trillion" of them to build a proper super hero. "Oy vey .." exclaims the guy from the Israeli budget office.

Hand-knit superhero costumes as art

Hand-knit superhero costumes as art 06/03/2004 09:03 AM
Sculptor Mark Newport knits life-sized superhero costumes as a form of fabric art. For instance, these Spiderman and Batman pieces, 77 x 27 x 6 inches, $5,500 each. He's got an upcoming show in Seattle, SUPERHERO PANTHEON, from August 5 - 28, 2004. Here's what some fancypants art critic said:
"Newport works in and around an arena which, no matter how hip, still must be considered under the particular jurisdiction of the adolescent male: comics and the comic-book hero. However, he subverts the obvious appeal of violent conflict between forces for good and evil by accenting the decorative aspect of comic work via embroidery... over select faces and details... and through descriptions of a kinder, gentler alternate hero... The artist's use of needle craft, typically considered well within the realm of "women's work," establishes a challenging relationship between the young man implied by these works, the voice of popular culture/media, and a father's voice."
