Compact Flash Linux Project is a Linux distribution designed to run on a compact flash card in read-only mode. It is as small as possible, and currently needs around 14 MB. It includes OpenSSH, quagga, iptables, hostap, madwifi, wireless-tools, pppoe, tcpdump, bridge-utils, and more.
Changes:
New packages include nemesis, grsecurity, and openswan. /proc/sys/net/ipv4/{tcp,udp}_blackhole was added, which behaves like FreeBSD's blackhole sysctls. This version has been tested for a long time, and it compiles with gcc version 2 and version 3. This version is considered stable.

image to Gizmodo JoelNot more than a week after the world saw the first 6.75MB/sec (45x) CompactFlash cards, Green House Corporation introduces their 12MB/sec (80x) cards. (All RAW, all the time, punk.) If you feel like spending nearly $5,400 on a single piece of equipment small enough to be flushed down the toilet, Green House can also fulfill your wildest dreams; the cards go up to 6GB capacities.

wcf54g.jpg imageThere's not much detail, but there really doesn't need to be -- Linksys has announced a CompactFlash card that supports their 'Wireless-G' standard, which if I'm not mistaken is what they call their not-quite-standard implementation of 802.11g. No word on price yet, but I wouldn't expect it to be much more expensive than the Wireless-B versions. Looks like the product number will be 'WCF54G.'

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM
Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the company used them as weapons against free and open source software projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has truly seen the open source light?

SanDisk 512MB CF and SD Cards 05/07/2004 03:02 PM
