Jetsonian relic: the Ready Lady Chair

Jetsonian relic: the Ready Lady Chair

Jetsonian relic: the Ready Lady Chair 04/23/2004 05:39 PM

ladychairDan sez: "This chair is straight out of a "house of the future" cartoon. It is upholstered in a silky beige vinyl and has a Velcro sealed back flap that opens to reveal a fold-out ironing board, an iron, and a GE hair dryer (the kind with the bag that you put over your head - and the bag is connected by a plastic tube to the hair dryer). There is a label on the inside of the back flap identifying the chair as being a "Ready Lady Chair" made by Castro Convertibles." Link

Remember that "Bond Age Beanbag chair" with chains, blog ged here yesterday? Oh, of course you do, pumpkin. Anyway, crafty BoingBoing reader Adam tips us off to the fact that the manufacturer's website includes a very poorly designed CMS feature that allows you to pass whatever text you fancy along to the image caption. Let's break this down. Here is the URL that links to details on the "Bond Age" beanbag chair from Jucci.com's homepage:

WL-16 Biped Wheel Chair Chair

WL-16 Biped Wheel Chair Chair 12/02/2003 12:25 AM
NewScientist says that Japanese researchers have created the first two legged walking robot that can carry a person It's probably not correct to call it a wheel chair. The bipedal (two legged) chair called the WL-16 can walk smoothly even if the person in the chair shifts. The WL-16 has 12 actuators for going forward, backward, or side to side. The researchers hope to make the robot someday go up and down stairs (safely). This could be the new thing in (for lack of a better term) wheel chairs. However, if it were to step on your foot with it's big flat feet, you might tend to disagree.

Chair Fix

Chair Fix 06/18/2004 08:01 AM

chairfix.jpg image

Oh, this is lovely, for real. I have a dirty secret. I recently discovered Ikea, and as someone who has lived their life spending the bulk of their money on gadgets and software, it was pleasing to know that I could purchase crappy pressboard furniture that actually looked sort of stylish, if only for a week or two before it starts to flake away. So this Chair Fix is like Ikea but even better, because it not only is made of relatively sturdy plywood (I'm so hard to impress, aren't I?), but it can be assembled without that little hex wrench -- no screws, just a few whacks with a mallet. Plus you can paint the board to your liking before popping out the pieces, and then have a matching piece of artwork for your chair.

New Jakarta Chair

New Jakarta Chair 02/19/2004 10:16 AM

Apache TomcatYesterday, the Apache Software Foundation's Board of Directors appointed Geir Magnusson Jr. as the new chair of the Jakarta Project Management Committee.  I will remain on the PMC as well as the board.

Apache AntI was appointed as the chair just under three years ago after having served as the release manager for both Ant and Tomcat.  For the past year, I have been actively seeking a replacement.  The reason is simple: while at first, I had an itch that needed scratching and I sought to make a number of good things happen, over time those itches were scratched and my role evolved into one of stopping bad things from happening (project members misbehaving, addressing criticisms from within the foundation, etc.).  Focusing exclusively on defense is not a sustainable model: there also need to be a focus on building.

JavaIn addition to Geir and my world views being very much aligned, Geir is also the ASF's representative to the JSPA's SE/EE Executive Committee.

Robotic walking chair

Robotic walking chair 12/03/2003 03:50 PM
Japanese researchers at Waseda University and manufacturer Tmsuk have built a prototype two-legged robotic walking chair which can carry a person and walk up and down stairs. Sort of reminds us of the iBot 3000, that motorized wheelchair invented by Dean Kamen (i.e. Mr. Segway) that can also climb up and down stairs. Though without the wheels, obviously. Anyway, a working model of the WL-16 could hit the market within a few years. Read [Via The Red Ferret Journal]...

Lady and the Tramp

Lady and the Tramp 02/17/2004 12:04 AM
Disneyland was quite a spot for Valentine's Day lovers on Saturday. I must say, however, that California Adventure was... about as exciting as Nebraska. We didn't get to ride the only ride worth riding because the line was too long - and the line for "gourmet" coffee was even longer. Still, I had a great time with my sweetheart. Jack Skellington memorabilia was all around (thanks to the Haunted Mansion redux), so I had to empty my wallet before leaving. $80 of it went to two jackets that would help keep our underdressed bodies warm in the evening hours. And since LEGO had an Imagination Center in Downtown Disney, I was also able to get a Darth Vader figurine to aid in the completion of my freshly-formed (out of the package) collection. Next year, perhaps I'll pick a slightly more secluded place to share time with that certain someone?...
