User Mode Linux expert wanted

User Mode Linux expert wanted 04/23/2004 02:53 PM

While we try fitting everything into Combust, we've been considering using UML on perl.org to make it easier to host sites or projects where Other People needs to be able to login with ssh or do other silly things like that. I spent most of a weekend tampering with it a while ago and got a Debian system to boot. Yay. Then I setup networking and the kernel on the host box decided to panic. Oops. So, we are looking...

If anyone out there has a KDE box handy, I've got something cool for them to test.  Aim me at fuzzygroup or Yahoo me at fuzzygroup or Jabber me at fuzzygroup @ jabber.com.  And if you have experience with IE CSS problems under OS-X, I've got something interesting to ask you about.  (I'd like to get this fixed before publicly posting the new url).  And, note, that the problem show up after we made the home page html xhtml compliant.  Sigh.

Kernel Mode Linux 2.4.30_001 (For Linux
2.4 branch)

Kernel Mode Linux 2.4.30_001 (For Linux
2.4 branch)
04/05/2005 11:56 AM
Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous, the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static type checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.
Changes:
This version was merged with the 2.4.30 Linux kernel.

Linux out, Mac in, advice wanted

Linux out, Mac in, advice wanted 01/24/2004 10:16 AM
I've grown weary of reinstalling Windows 2000 on my father-in-law's computer, so I reformatted and installed Mandrake 9.2. I've had problems before using Linux as a desktop system (starting around July 10 here), but this time I figured it would work. After all, my problems in the past had to do with trying to get the desktop up to Windows' level of application functionality, but my father-in-law uses his computer only for browsing. So, with just one application to worry about, Linux should provide the stability at which Windows curls its painted lip. Mandrake 9.2 installed like a dream. It...

Torvalds wanted in Linux trademark legal
battle

Torvalds wanted in Linux trademark legal
battle
08/11/2004 07:23 PM
Looks like Linus Torvalds is going back to court, but this time he'll be in an Australian court room. Linux Australia Inc. has asked for the help of Linus Torvalds to once again save Linux from being trademarked for profit.

A company by the name of Linux Australia Pty Ltd applied to trademark itself (in doing so trademark Linux). It wasn't until September 9, 2003 that Linux Australia Inc. received a letter from this company asking for their cooperation. Back in 1996 Linus Torvalds had to face a similar case. William Della Croce registered Linux as a trademark in the U.S.A., and soon afterwards started demanding royalties from U.S. Linux vendors for using its name. Luckily Linus Torvalds won the case, and now Linux is a registered trademark of Linus Torvalds.

I don't have any doubt that this problem in Australia will be resolved. If Linus Torvalds could do it in the USA, then can surely do it in Australia. Still I have to wonder how many times similar instances will popup over the next few years in other countries.
