From Wireless Superstar To... Selling
Mortgages?
07/22/2004 06:27 PM
During the boom years, Aether Systems was supposedly going to change the wireless world. A lot of people never understood what they were trying to do, but it was going to be "big." That sentiment helped drive up the stock and make it worth a few billion dollars at one point. So, where are they now? Investing in mortgages. Seriously. The company has sold off all its wireless pieces. The explanation for why: "We were spending more than we were bringing in." Ah, the old burn rate excuse. Of course, this didn't stop them way back when. Over the years they've been public the company has squandered $2.4 billion. Doesn't exactly explain why you go from wireless communications to selling mortgages.

Top Spam For The Year: Viagra, Mortgages
And Porn
12/31/2003 07:16 PM
Well, what better way to close out the year than a post about spam? AOL has released their list of "top" spam messages from 2003 which represent the subject lines of the spam they found most often in 2003. At the top of the list, of course, is any subject pitching Viagra. Next up are spam for low mortgage rates, and coming in third is the ever popular porn spam. AOL claims they blocked 500 billion spam messages - an average of about 40 per day per user.

Mortgages Stretch Borrowers

Housing Bubble News: Adjustable Rate
Mortgages Stretch Borrowers
05/16/2004 12:21 PM

  • Reuters: Popular ARM loans can misfire for some homebuyers. "Those stretching to get into a home by using that (ARM) as a tool but haven't planned ahead are going to get into trouble," warned Douglas Duncan, chief economist at the Mortgage Bankers Association.
  • So why are Duncan's members enticing borrowers so ardently with ARM-based loans? This is like the credit-card industry, which whines about delinquent consumers but does everything in its power to sign up new customers who will have trouble paying.

    • Roller 1.1.2: still haven't released this minor bug-fix release, maybe later today.

    • Roller 1.2: not a whole lot of progress 1.2 last week, but I did take three full days (1 holiday and 2 vacation days) to work on RSS and Atom in Action and as part of that, I implemented Atom Protocol Draft 04 in Roller's CVS head. The code will be part of 1.2, but will not be enabled.

    • Roller 2.0: made some more progress in Roller 2.0 data model work last week, but not much.

    • Roller@Apache: All accounts appear to be in place. Perhaps we'll make the move to Apache's Subversion repo this week?

    • RSS and Atom in Action: Those two vacation days I took were part of a final push to finish the book. Although I was able to write a useful blog entry on Atom Protocol, I found that it is not yet stable enough to allow me to complete Chapter 8 Publishing with Atom. So, the plan is now to push all the rest of the chapters through production and wrap Chapter 8 just before going to print.
