Are Older Macs Lower Than Low End?

Are Older Macs Lower Than Low End? 03/15/2003 12:30 AM

I think that older Macs still have value, just a different kind of value. Rather than being put to use as workhorses, we will see them retired as collector's items. (Low End Mac via MyAppleMenu)

Processor upgrade gives older PCI-based

Processor upgrade gives older PCI-based
Power Macs 1GHz speeds
01/06/2005 12:23 PM
PowerLogix and Other World Computing (OWC) today announced the PowerForce 750GX G3 processor upgrade for original PCI-based Apple Power Macintosh computers. The 1.0 Gigahertz (GHz) PCI 750GX is the latest addition to the PowerForce G3 processor line. It operates at 1GHz and includes 1.0 Megabytes (MB) of L2 cache, also running at 1GHz. The PowerForce 750GX utilizes the 20x bus multiplier of the IBM PowerPC 750GX processor to allow older PCI-based Power Macs to reach 1GHz speeds. "The PowerForce 750GX allows older Power Macs to operate at modern CPU (central processing unit) speeds, extending the life of these machines at minimal expense," said Larry O'Connor, president of OWC. "And not only can users of the original PCI-based Macs now work faster and more effectively than ever, since the card is compatible with Mac OS 8.6 and higher, they'll also have the added benefit of using the operating system of their choice. This includes Mac OS X, which is simply phenomenal, especially when used with OWC's XPostFacto." The PowerForce 750GX is compatible with the 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500 and 9600 models, as well as select Power Computing and Umax clones. It alsos include a built-in fan sink to provide necessary CPU cooling, fail-safe protection circuitry (in case the card is not fully plugged into the motherboard CPU slot), CPU Director software for adjusting speeds on the fly and compatibility with add-on PCI cards.

F
rom Derrick Jensen's A Language Older Than Words:

There are times the lies get to me, times I weary of battering myself against the obstacles of denial, hatred, fear-inducing stupidity, and greed, times I want to curl up and fall into the problem, let it sweep me away as it so obviously sweeps away so many others. I remember a spring day a few years ago, a spring day much like this one, only a little more sun, and warmer. I sat on this same couch and looked out this same window at the same ponderosa pine.

I was frightened, and lonely. Frightened of a future that looks dark, and darker with each passing species, and lonely because for every person actively trying to shut down the timber industry, stop abuse, or otherwise bring about a sustainable and sane way of living, there are thousands who are helping along this not-so-slow train to oblivion. I began to cry.

The tears stopped soon enough. I realized we are not so outnumbered. We are not outnumbered at all. I looked closely, and saw one blade of wild grass, and another. I saw the sun reflecting bright off the needles of pine trees, and I heard the hum of flies. I saw ants walking single file through the dust, and a spider crawling toward the corner of the ceiling. I knew in that moment, as I've known ever since, that it is no longer possible to be lonely, that every creature on earth is pulling in the direction of life -- every grasshopper, every struggling salmon, every unhatched chick, every cell of every blue whale -- and it is only our own fear that sets us apart...

Ours is a politics, economics and religion of occupation, not of inhabitation, and as such the methods by which we are formed and governed have no legitimacy save that sprouting from the end of a cannon, from a can of pepper spray, from the rapist's penis, from the travesty of modern education, from the instilled dread of a distant hell and the false promise of a future techtopia, from the chains that bind children to beds and looms and from the everyday fear of starvation -- as well as an internalized notion of what constitutes social success or failure -- that binds us to wage slavery. The responsibility for holding destructive institutions, systems and culture accountable falls on each of us. We are the governors as well as the governed...

If someone were to ask me what to do about the problems facing the world today I would say: Listen. If you listen carefully enough you will in time know exactly what to do.

Kailee Is Older than Yahoo

Kailee Is Older than Yahoo 03/14/2005 06:23 PM

Yahoo is celebrating its 10th birthday and as a result, an yone with a Yahoo account can get a free scoop of Baskin Robbins ice cream today only. An interesting discussion ensued this morning when I was printing out the coupons and noting to Brent we'd be going for free ice cream tonight.

Brent: "So Yahoo is only 10 years old? I thought it was more like 20."
Jenny: "No, it's almost as old as you are." (Brent is nine years old.)
Brent: "Wow. So there was no Yahoo before I was born?"
Jenny: "That's right. Before you were born, there wasn't really an internet or the web or email. There was a very basic form for people in the military and at universities, but there were no web sites to visit and no web games to play."
Brent: "So Runescape didn't exist?"
Jenny: "Nope. You're older than Runescape."
Brent: "So computers were worthless ten years ago?"

Revert to an Older Mac OS X Version 04/18/2005 12:02 AM
Is the latest 10.3.9 update causing you some problems? More than likely, it's because you haven't been keeping up with your routine maintenance. Of course, it could just be a bad update too. Either way, reverting back to an older version of Mac OS X is easy, but time consuming. Read this week's Power User Monday.

I always find video and data restoration stories very interesting. I have been converting a significant number of home movies to digital media. A process that is time consuming. Never the less once they are all converted I will be able to burn DVD's and also keep a hard-drive with all photo's, video's etc in the safety deposit box and one here at the house.

I have been very pro-active in ensuring our digital life is not destroyed when a hard-drive decides to die. [USA Today]

Is music on your older CD's any good 08/08/2004 09:05 PM

Apparently CD's over time are becoming unplayable. This makes me cringe as I have nearly 1000 CD's, and this means I am going to have to start copying the raw tracks to hard-drives. Let's see what that is going to cost me. 1000 x 650,000,000 bytes = 650,000,000,000 bytes Unless I did the math wrong this is going to hurt. [BBC]

EU: A limit recognized?

EU: A limit recognized? 07/27/2004 09:36 AM
Stefan Bechtold writes that the EU Commission (ok, a staff report) has decided that copyright terms for recordings in Europe should not be increased beyond the current term (50 years after publication), despite the growing pressure of recording labels to increase the term to "save" (as they put it) some of the most important Rock from entering the public domain. The story is getting press in Europe. (Independent, BBC< /a>). This is an extremely important development in this battle. For once, a government-related entity has recognized the truth (or at least, not had its recognition crushed). I've already been talking to archives that are working on the idea of releasing all the recordings they can when they pass into the public domain on January 1, as a way of demonstrating the value of a wide range of work becoming available, unencumbered, for widespread use. Here in the U.S., we'll be able to celebrate the same in, um, 2019. Till then, for your listening pleasure, an oldie (first posted here last July): a 1937 radio program from the Columbia Workshop about creative works passing from the "copyright lane" into the "public domain".

Previously we reported on speculation that Google may be hitting a size limit: standard C coding uses 32-bits of storage for numbers, which means that Google might be running out of numbers to identify new documents with. Adding further credence to this theory is the fact that Google has finally added more pages to their results, but only by using a separate supplemental index. I can't think of any good reasons to do this except to get around the size restriction....

Next Windows to Limit USB Key, iPod Use

Next Windows to Limit USB Key, iPod Use 09/09/2004 09:00 AM

CNet is reporting that Microsoft's upcoming Longhorn version of Windows will have tools designed to help businesses prevent the use of USB keys, iPods, or any other mass storage device that can be connected to work computers, all in the interest of protecting company data. Sounds like a cluster to me, but if iron-fisted sysadmins really feel like they need to lock down USB ports, an operating system-level tool is probably better than nothing. That being said, this is, at best, just a small part of an overall security solution.

It still sounds like a case of "OMG FLOPPY DRIVES?!?!" The data still leaves the company inside the minds of the employees, too. What is Microsoft doing to prevent data loss via the brain, huh? Clearly, there is a serious security hole there. My advice is free booze after 3:30.
