Nokia 6230 Review

Nokia 6230 Review 04/23/2004 08:15 AM

Mobileburn follows up on their original Nokia 6230 preview with an in-depth review of the new Series 40 phone, most notable for its 65K color screen (most older Nokias have still been stuck with so-so 4K color screens). While they aren't impressed with the physical styling (and absolutely loathe the...

Popular Nokia 6230 Handset Goes Missing 08/05/2004 10:52 AM

nokia-6230.jpg imageFinally Nokia releases a phone that everyone wants, then bungle the supply chain so that all the retailers go out of stock. The 6230, the new(ish) candy bar phone with a nice 65k-color screen, radio, and MP3 player is nowhere to be found in London, and no one is quite sure when it will be back in retail again.

If you've got a 6230 that you aren't terribly fond of, perhaps this would be a good time to introduce you to my friend, eBay.

Nokia N-Gage QD Review

Nokia N-Gage QD Review 06/11/2004 09:40 AM

ngage06-lrg.jpg imageWe've all given Nokia a break with the launch of the N-Gage QD. I mean, they fixed Sidetalkin', added a longer-lasting battery, they dropped extraneous features like stereo sound ... wait, whaa happan? Digital Lifestyles has the first of a three-part review up, focusing on the hardware of the QD and while it seems like a perfectly capable Series 60 phone (much like the first N-Gage), I just don't know what in the hell Nokia is doing anymore. The way to gaming console success probably isn't to make a device that people might sort of be interested in if it's free.

Nokia 6600 review

Nokia 6600 review 12/03/2003 08:36 PM
BoingBoing pal R. Emory Lundberg just reviewed the apparently ubergruven Nokia 6600:
[The] all-in-one organizer, information manager, and mobile communicator that you may have been waiting for. If the Nokia 3650 was too playful for your lifestyle, you should consider this handset as a way to communicate, organize, and lighten the load in your pocket. Generally I prefer separate devices. I really like the Palm Tungsten T3 (review) and find it a very capable tool. But there are times when I just want my schedule and contacts with me, and don't need to work on Office documents on the go, and the Nokia 6600 has quickly become my handset of choice.

Nokia Mediamaster review

Nokia Mediamaster review 09/18/2004 07:30 AM
I've been an owner of a digital television (DVB-C) box for a while now. My chosen model was the Nokia Mediamaster 260C, which I bought as soon as it got out.

While the idea of a 80 GB hard drive recorder is good, the Navibar UI looks cool, and the box looks nice, that's pretty much the extent of the good things about it. Let me explain:

First of all, this is an expensive box, considering that it only has a single tuner (making it impossible to tape one channel, and watch another). And the fact that it is cable only tends to hamper its moveability (you have to buy a new one if you move to a place with only terrestrial or satellite digital tv). It's really only for first adopters. Also, for an expensive box the construction is rather shabby - the power button on the device itself feels as if it was breaking off. And the remote feels wrong - some of the buttons (like the "opt", which is used for getting a pop-up menu) are located in inconvenient positions for frequent usage. The navigation key doesn't really work, either (my words are failing: what's "tunnoton" in English?) And the fan is LOUD.

A far bigger problem is the unstability. If I leave the box on for a weekend, it has almost certainly crashed when I get back. And you can't download firmware updates, because my cable company does not officially support this box. And the Nokia support site is not helpful either, because you are supposed to download the updates over the digital tv network.

Those I could still live with, being an early adopter and all - you know, first generation problems and so forth.

But what really kills the whole thing for me is the usability. You know, sometimes you just notice that usability studies were done with engineers, and "regular people" have problems with the UI. But this one - I am an engineer, and I have *serious* problems with it. So it makes me wonder, was this thing tested at all before market?

First of all - you cannot go through the program guide and say "record this program". Nope. You just have to scribble the date, time and channel down, and then return back to the top level and go to the programming menu. This box does not support the "SI" data (which allows the program to be recorded even if it was late or changed slots), but then again, neither do the cable channels in Finland (I think). So the UI resembles an old VCR in that sense. You even have to add an extra ten minutes or so, so that you get the whole program.

This, of course, makes the entire "record this program weekly" -feature near-useless. At least in Finland, programs keep shifting schedules weekly (by five-ten minutes), so it is almost impossible to record a particular program correctly for more than a month. And in most cases, the programs I want to record are in the middle of the night, which slot is particularly subject to programming changes. This is, of course, mostly a problem with the networks. But hey, they don't want me to watch the programs, fine.

I have so many usability gripes with this machine (like the fact that the EPG is damn unusable, or that the menus - aside from the Navibar - look so horribly, horribly crappy, as if the designer had only a Commodore-64 - or that the playback stops if you use the menus, and you have to go back to the taped program listing and select the program again if you want to resume watching, so I will concentrate on the two major fuck-ups.

The Timer menu does not show the week day. It does not show it while you're programming, or while you're viewing. This makes it a hard cognitive task to figure out which program is which. Let's say that you want to tape a program next Wednesday (because programs tend to repeat on a weekly basis): You actually have to find out today's date, and then figure out which day is next We

Another Nokia 6820 Review

Another Nokia 6820 Review 05/31/2004 06:59 AM

nokia_6820.jpg imageThe Register has a belated review of the Nokia 6820, the non-traditional Series 40 flip-phone with the built-in QWERTY keyboard, but it's worth linking to as El Reg always has interesting things to say. And interesting things to link, I might add, like this Series 40 SSH client (SSH clients are pretty much a platform prerequisite for me, needed or not). The phone, as before, is a hit-or-miss device (and does not, as the picture might suggest, occasionally launch itself majestically into flight), with plenty to recommend it (namely, the form factor) but lots to dissuade most buyers, like wonky Java support. The 6820 prompts a couple of questions from The Register that I've asked myself: where is the Series 60 phone with this form factor, and how soon will it be before all phones come with QWERTY keyboards?

MobileBurn takes a closer look the 6230, one of those new cellphones Nokia announced last week. Weighing in at 97 grams and just 20mm thick, the 6230 is plenty small considering all the features it has: an integrated VGA quality digital camera which can record video clips, a 65,000 color display, Bluetooth, and an MMC expansion card slot. NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

headset_gps_nkoi.jpg imageAnd last but not least (if you're reading from the bottom up; otherwise, welcome to the Nokia posts!) are these two new peripherals from Nokia, a new Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W headset with a 6 hour talk time, and this Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W that also connects to your phone or PDA via Bluetooth (the GPS may not actually be new - it seems sort of familiar - but I don't exactly recall hearing about it before). The GPS unit uses the same battery and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing charge to go along with it.

The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't scheduled until Q1 2005.

Nokia is targeting developing nations with these models and they look well enough to suit their purpose as part of a plan to eventually offer mobile service for just $5 a month. They both feature talk times of over 5 hours and the Nokia 1600 has a 65k color screen while the Nokia 1110 uses a sunlight-friendly inverted black and white display. They're expected to retail for $105 and $85, respectively, and will be available later this year.
