06/25/2004 02:00 AM
Zagreb, Croatia (PRWEB) June 15, 2004 -- For the last two decades computer telephony was telephony boards based business. It is the time for changes, or at least that is what folks at Uniqall do think about it. Few days ago Uniqall made available for free download the first public beta of its flagship Gridborg 1.0 software that is supposed to displace expensive telephony boards from theirs well entrenched positions within computer telephony solutions. Court Rules Evel Knievel Is A Pimp;

Court Rules Evel Knievel Is A Pimp;
Knievel Rules Judges Are Bimbos
01/04/2005 08:20 PM
Really not quite sure what to make of this one, but it's too amusing to pass up. Apparently, a few years ago, ESPN posted a picture of famed daredevil Evel Knievel with his arms around two women (one of whom was his wife) with the caption: "You're never too old to be a pimp." Knievel, not realizing this was a (weak) attempt at complimenting him, sued ESPN for defamation. A lower court tossed out the ruling, and he appealed. Now the Appeals Court has ruled against him as well, noting that, based on the context no one is actually going to think Knievel is a "pimp," and, in fact that the statement was supposed to be a positive one, as the slang of the day suggests. Knievel, apparently lacking a sense of irony over this particular case, has responded by calling the judges "bimbos." The full quote is: "They ruled against the law. What good is law in the United States of America if five or six goddamn bimbos are going to rule against it?" You think he intended that as a compliment? Anyway, in the meantime, feel free to go on captioning photos on the web while calling people pimps.

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules
09/13/2004 02:14 PM
USA Today is claiming that the rules have changed for resumes, now that they're mostly sent via email instead of snail mail. However, when they get into the details, they sound amazingly like the "rules" many of us learned back in the days before you emailed resumes: focus on results from previous jobs (read: throw in lots of useless percentages to make it look like you improved something), use "descriptive or significant terms" (read: make sure you include the BS buzzwords-of-the-moment to make it through that first pass filter), don't send the wrong cover letter to the wrong company (read: don't be completely stupid), and don't apply "above your skill level" (read: don't waste HR's time so much). I remember hearing all of these years ago as well, and they don't seem any different in this "new age of electronic resumes" as the article would have you believe. Then, of course, there's the biggest recommendation for this supposed new age: they suggest you spam as many companies as possible. Again, has there ever been a time when people were told to send out fewer resumes? If anything, it seems like this strategy is the wrong strategy in the digital age where HR folks are so inundated with resumes that some have found that going back to paper resumes is much more effective in getting attention.

Telephony R.I.P.?

Telephony R.I.P.? 01/07/2004 03:22 PM
I have an iSight and a nice new Mac laptop. I also have a beat-up old Mac and a decent Canon videocam that I don’t use that much, not having (yet) developed videographer’s reflexes. Anyhow, the Canon has firewire output, so I plugged that into the old Mac and what do you know, it works just fine with iChat AV. So we put the old Mac and the Canon with a little tripod on a desk in a quiet but wired area upstairs and it’s a free videophone to anywhere in the world. Restating for emphasis: whenever I’m anywhere in the world and have an Internet connection, I can have a free videophone call home, that goes on as long as I need to and nobody’s counting minutes or running up a phone bill. Let’s see; free telephone with video, or pay-for-it telephone with no picture. Costly and voice-only, or free with a picture. I think this is what an inflexion point smells like.

Vonage, 2nd try for IP telephony

Vonage, 2nd try for IP telephony 12/17/2004 06:36 PM

Last summer I switched to lingo.com, an IP phone service that proved to be cheap but unreliable.  Starting last week Lingo failed altogether and their tech support folks (available only by phone, which is kind of irksome) failed to call back, so I ordered Vonage, which is the same $25/month but does not include Western Europe in its unlimited calling region and has higher international rates.

Here's how Vonage has worked...

  • Vonage sends you a brand-new Linksys broadband router with included IP phone jacks and three Ethernet jacks; if you were relying on your old router for 802.11b or to use as an 8-port hub you may have to buy some new networking gear
  • the customer service Web site is very slow and about 25% of the time page requests produce an error page with a "try again later" instruction
  • tech support is available through a form on their Web site; this form asks for your name, phone number, account number, etc., even though you've already logged in and it should have all of his info as part of your account profile
  • tech support via phone results in a "we're experiencing an unsually high volume of calls; try again later"; customer service (billing, etc.) can be reached after a 15-minute wait in queue
  • they say that they never received my FAXed letter of authorization to transfer my old number from Lingo and want it refaxed
  • when set to simultaneously ring my cell phone Vonage does ring the cell but I can't hear callers (they can hear me though)

They say that it will take two months for them to transfer the phone number from Lingo, so I'll have to pay $25/month to Lingo for forwarding until that happens.

[Update:  I believe that I unfairly maligned Vonage in regards to not being able to hear callers on calls simultaneously rung to my cell phone.  It turns out that it is my PalmOne Treo flaking out on the very day that I installed Vonage!  This makes Treo #10 that has failed, I think.  It lasted about two months, just like the others.  Anyone have a suggestion for a GSM phone that will do a calendar and contacts sync with Microsoft Outlook?]

[Dec 3 Update:  When voicemail is pending, the Vonage system fails to change the dial tone.  A second try to reach technical support (at 1:30 pm Eastern time) resulted in the same "we're too busy to talk to anyone" recording.  The voice quality of calls is somewhat low, with some constant static.]
