07/21/2004 12:47 AMHot on the heels of
yesterday's announcement of new whip antennae,
QuickerTek has just announced
new
PowerBook carry handles. These handles are designed for the
12-inch aluminum PowerBook, 15-inch aluminum Book, 15-inch TiBook and
the 17-inch PowerBook. These tough carbon fiber and aluminum handles
attach to the PowerBook case and offer an easy way to carry them as
well as a tilted stand for desktop computing.

There's a rule in the tech
industry—making something out of carbon fiber makes it cooler. I
don't care if it's a toilet plunger or a car hood, carbon fiber just
sounds more interesting than "shiny plastic." Therefore, we aren't
surprised to see that Asus is giving it a go in the carbon fiber
notebook niche.
A few other folks have gone this route, but Asus seems to have hit
a sweet spot. The V6V isn't too ostentatious. It's got a nice Pentium
M-based chipset, and it's acceptably light—a 15" screen at 5.5
pounds—to warrant the carbon fiber.

Carbon Fiber G5 Powerbooks?
Carbon Fiber G5 Powerbooks?
04/13/2004 09:52 AMJOEL JOHNSON -- Rumors abound that the G5 Powerbooks (which last I
heard wouldn't make it out until next year, but Cult of Mac is
guesstimating this summer) will ditch the aluminum casings for carbon
fiber. Carbon fiber is often used in high-performance automotive body
parts due to its decent...

Of
course, we can't vouche for the validity of this Playstation 3 Mockup,
but it's awful pretty, isn't it? It would sort of make sense
for the PS3 to play UMD, but something about the front of the big
mockup looks funky to me. Still, cool. (Thanks, Junki!)

because of the extra gig of space over the iPod mini. Rio has a nasty
habit of making seriously quality products that get passed over too
often.

Pocket-Lint manages to score
the first proper Rio Carbon review I've seen, and certainly the first
to use Guns & Roses as their test music. One thing that is a nice
is the Carbon's drag-and-drop ability, because while music managing
software can be very nice, it's also nice to have the option to just
copy over some music (or whatever) via Windows' Explorer or the Mac's
Finder. From the sound of it, it seems Rio has a real winner in the
5GB hard disk music player. The question is, will the consumer market
think so?

I'm glad Rio is actually going to push their new 5GB hard
disk-based Carbon player a bit instead of just letting it languish in
the market - it looks like a pretty solid product (I haven't used it
yet). To that end, they're running a special promotion for the first
500 people to order the new $250 player that includes a
custom-engraved, numbered back, a free shipping upgrade to 2 day air,
and a 3 month/20 track download option from Napster. Oh, and lest we
forget, a limited edition collectors box that looks suspiciously like
someone else's. It might not be enough to sway undecided purchasers,
but if you were already leaning that way, might as well give it a
whirl.

As we talked
about this weekend, Rio has announced at least one new player, an
update to the Rio Nitrus called the 'Rio Carbon,' a 5GB hard
disk-based MP3 player with a killer 20-hour battery life (if that's
the sort of thing that slays you; the iPod mini does about 8 to 10
hours, for comparison). Interestingly, the Carbon also has support for
Microsoft's new DRM platform, Janus; to my knowledge it's the first
player that has.
The Rio Carbon should be available late August and will retail for
$250. Now where's the Rio Chroma announcement?
