IBM, Fox Working To Make TV Content Less
Useful
IBM, Fox Working To Make TV Content Less
Useful
04/18/2005 01:59 AMIt's amazing how much effort some companies are going through to make
their products
less useful to customers. The latest is an
effort by IBM and Fox Entertainment Group (patent pending, of
course...) to take the broadcast flag (which
might
not be legal) one step further and add the ability to
block transfers outside of a
local viewing area. Now, there is
some good in hearing
that this is happening -- because it shows that the industry at least
admits that there are some cases in which sending a TV show over the
internet makes sense, even if it's very limited. In fact, the main
reason they're working on this is because some were afraid that the
all out "no copying over the internet" broadcast flag would prevent
people from sending a TV show from their DVR to their computer, or
from one TV to another, or some other similar
local area
transfer. Of course, an easier way to handle that is to just remove
the broadcast flag altogether, saving not only the time and the money,
but the annoyance from viewers who are trying to do something
legitimate and are stymied by restrictive technology. Once again,
though, it's worth pointing out that the TV they're talking about is
broadcast TV which is (oh yeah!) already being sent out for
free over the airwaves and which is supported by commercials.
In other words, this is TV that the companies should want to make as
easy to share as possible because it drives more people to watch, more
people to see the commercials, and, thus, more advertisers interested
in buying ad space.

Why Charging For Newspaper Content
Online Doesn't Make Sense
Why Charging For Newspaper Content
Online Doesn't Make Sense
11/07/2003 04:16 AMOne of the arguments that shows up here repeatedly is on the
backwardness of local newspapers charging for online content. There
are a number of reasons why it's a bad idea - from the level of taking
yourself out of the online discussion and believing that walled garden
content can survive to misunderstanding the very basic economics of
the internet. Still, many newspapers are trying to do so, and some
even believe that
it's going
well. Along comes Vin Crosbie, who knows both the newspaper
business and the online content world, to
smack
a little sense into them. The Albuquerque Journal explained why
they thought they were brilliant for creating a "successful" operation
charging for their online content, and Crosbie picks apart the
argument, bit by bit, and explains how they're actually losing money
on this plan - and how all their other examples of newspapers charging
for online content are bad (or irrelevant) examples. If you're
interested in the economics of online content, it's worth a read.

Building accessible tables.
Building accessible tables.
09/30/2002 01:52 PMCSS and XHTML have given tables a pretty rough ride in recent times.
Of course, this is the fault of just about all web developers who have
at some point in their career used them for laying out page elements.
This article is not about using tables for layout. It is about how to
use tables to display information in an accessible manner. Use XHTML
and CSS all you want for layout, but if you have information
relationships to display, use tables and use them well.

10/25/2002 03:31 PMMany developers still view graphics and accessibility as being on
opposing ends of the web development scale. The truth is that
including graphics in your documents does not mean your page has to be
any less accessible. In fact graphics can be used to enhance the
accessibility of a page. There are, however, a few key techniques that
you can employ to ensure that you don't have to construct alternative
"Text-Only" documents.

Building Accessible HTML Tables for the
Disabled
Building Accessible HTML Tables for the
Disabled
10/01/2002 12:25 PMBlind and other severely vision impaired users rely on assistive
technologies to render web content. All text can be fed through a
screen reader or refreshable braille display to be presented to the
user. However, despite containing text, the table above could make a
real mess of things without a few extra behind the scenes
accessibility enhancements. To an assistive browser our table could
well look like this:
Time Planned Task Preferred Task What I actually did
10 - 12 Catch up on replying to my emails. Have a lie in. Surfed
aimlessly.
12-1 Have Lunch. Have Lunch. Had Breakfast.
1-5 Finish that project. Go to video store. Caught up on my emails.
Ok, we can still kind of make a little sense of it. That is because we
can see it. A blind user can't easily scan back up and check what the
third piece of information relates to. Was it what I actually did, or
what I would have preferred to do? This is why we need to create
relationships within the code of our table. Thankfully, from HTML4.0 a
bucketful of accessibility enhancements were introduced to enable the
conscientious developer to do this. -- Tim Roberts
