and today is one of those times. But it's not convergence of protocols
and standards that I want to mention today. Instead, it's a
convergence of two of the concepts that intrigue me as they offer a
very good ration of reward to risk when combined.

A Nifty Trick
A Nifty Trick
10/28/2003 11:08 PMI have a nifty trick I wanted to share, since I think Web designers
might find it useful when making reductions of bugs to send to browser
developers. Basically I had this bug I was working on where content
would sometimes shift too far to the right in Safari (don't worry,
this bug isn't in 1.0). The bug was timing-related, and it only
occurred intermittently when you reloaded the page.
The bug would only happen if layout occurred at a particular time,
and usually this happened when a script was stalled loading long
enough for the browser to decide it needed to show the user what it
had so far.
If a script stalls, it's blocking the parsing of the rest of the
content, so if a layout does occur, you're basically guaranteed that
you're going to lay out the content of the page exactly up to the
opening script tag and no more.
The bug in question would only happen if Safari had to do a layout
before the script had loaded. Maciej (the JS guru on our team) came
up with a clever idea: instead of pointing the script at an external
resource, just make the script do something that would force a
synchronous layout. Then you could basically construct test cases
that made layout happen at precise chokepoints that you set up
yourself! How cool is that?
A trick that works with both Safari and Mozilla is to try to access
a property like offsetHeight, so here's an example:
<script>var v =
document.body.offsetHeight;</script>
The layout engine basically has to lay out in order to give you a
decent answer, so the handy little snippet above can be inserted
anywhere in a document to force the layout of a page up to that
point!
Armed with this trick I was able to easily fix the bug, since I now
had a test case that demonstrated the problem 100% of the time.
Thanks, Maciej!

Just One
12/18/2002 07:04 AMHere's a Nice Mozilla / Phoenix Trick: Just One
Here's a nice trick for web developers. Its not rocket science at all
but its certainly helpful. All (well at least folks like me) of us
have too many browsers open. This makes it hard to know which browser
is open to a Blog, which browser is open to Slashdot and which one has
the web application you're working on. What I do is save Internet
Explorer for blogging and content I'm reading / researching, Mozilla
for development tools like PhpMyAdmin and Phoenix for what I'm
testing. This makes my ALT+TAB switching between windows very easy --
I just look for that one icon for what I'm testing or the tool I need
instead of trying to "Step right up. Pick an Internet Explorer icon
and you have a 1 in 10 shot of getting the right one". (Replace 10 w/
the average number of IE windows you have).
Note: This could also be very useful on OS-X where the implementation
of ALT+TAB is brain damaged. At least brain damaged in my opinion. I
suspect Jeremy who has vented on this same topic would like this
trick. Just three browsers and you can always ALT+TAB directly to at
least one or two of them.

Is That Your Finger in Your Ear, or...
12/11/2003 04:57 PM
I've long remembered something about a wrist-phone with mic hidden in
the wristband and thumb as earphone, allowing you to talk on the phone
simply by making the international sign for "I'll call you."
Unfortunately I never blogged it and soon lost track of the link.
Thankfully, it appears to have returned, albeit a finger, not a thumb,
in your ear.
Yahoo!
News reports that NTT DoCoMo's Masaaki Fukumoto is developing the
idea. Similar to the "bone phone" idea back in the 70s or 80s, sound
travels as vibrations through the bones to the finger, into the ear,
where the eardrum converts them back into sound. And as if that
weren't juicy enough, "by touching forefinger to thumb, the user
starts or ends a call, and uses voice recognition technology to dial
the number."
You _know_ I want one...

Spammers Use Spyware To Trick You Into
Opening Spam
06/22/2004 12:09 PMThe war over spam keeps escalating, and it's pretty obvious that the
spammers have been winning in many cases. Once they figured out how
to get Trojans onto computer, creating their own virtual spamming
super computer, spammers have
adopted
this method for most of the spam they send out. However, they're
now adopting another net.annoyance to piss everyone off. They're
usi
ng spyware to get personal details about you that they can then
use to get you to open their spam messages. In other words, they're
doing some keylogging, not necessarily to get your credit card and
bank account info (not that they wouldn't mind that info, of course),
but to put the name of your children or your dog into the subject
line, making it
much more likely that you'll open the spam
message. Of course, it seems they didn't consider the next step,
which is that it also makes it
much less likely that someone
will actually buy. By tricking them into opening such a message,
spammers will tend to both creep people out and piss them off. That's
usually not the best sales combination.
