At least there's some evidence that Brian Dear's company - EVDB - has a logo.
Lots of folks are talking about it - but Brian's zipped
lipped.
But they're apparently part of the 'Calendaring and Scheduling
Consortium' - so now they're public. :-)

Hmm - why isn't WhizSpark part
of this consortium? I wonder if they wanna help put up shared
XML servers of Events - scraped from throughout the web? That's what
OpenEvents is all about. Open APIs

Near-Death Company Springs To Life,
Thanks To Found Patents
Near-Death Company Springs To Life,
Thanks To Found Patents
03/31/2005 07:20 AMDan writes
"Ampex is another company resorting to an arsenal of patents to
keep themselves alive. Now, their stock price price has taken
off." This story is an interesting one. The company has been
around for quite a long time, and obviously has done some very
innovative things over the years. However, its patent windfall seems
like a fluke. It certainly doesn't sound like any of the companies
they've convinced to cough up these millions of dollars really made
use of these patents -- they just came up with the same concepts
independently. That, of course, demonstrates the weakness of the
patent system. The point of the patent system is to publicize the
info, so that others can build on top of it, while compensating the
original creator. The problem, though, is that if innovations are
done entirely separately of the patents in question, then you could
easily make the claim that the original patents aren't valid. They
should only have been granted if they were "non-obvious" and if others
are coming up with the same thing independently, it's difficult to
claim it wasn't obvious to the skilled practitioner. Either way,
while the article suggests Ampex is trying to build a business model
out of this, it's hard to see how it's sustainable for more than a few
years. Sure, they're creating a licensing program, but the patents
will run out in a few years -- and they realistically
lucked
into this patent windfall. They've just been hanging onto them for
years, and suddenly noticed they were relevant. That's not a
sustainable business model, but a lucky windfall.

Inside
of all of us, there is a tiny, tie-dye-wearing Assembler demo coder
waiting to shine. Don't let him out—he'll only make a couple of
cool 65k demos before deciding what he really wants to be is a
four-track MOD DJ, spreading the healing power that a danceable remix
of the Airwolf theme provides.
Instead, keep him deep inside your brain, appeased by the random
number generator of the random lovers generation, the Lava Lamp. This
new model available on Thinkgeek is not only powered by USB, but is
only ten bucks.

03/25/2005 12:46 PMHere are a few details on Target's exclusive "Lava Vader" from
"Metalzombie".
I work for a Target DC, and on Sunday we had about four skid loads
of the Target exclusive Darth Vader's roll in. My buddy and me popped
a case open, and they look incredibly sweet. They come packaged in a
clear plastic case, like the vintage OTC ones, with Star Wars: Revenge
Of The Sith on the back. The bottom says Target Exclusive, with a red
picture of Vader to the left, and the sticker across the top simply
says "Darth Vader".USB-powered mini lava-lamp

.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?pr03146Of all the personal
computers to be unwrapped during the holiday season, more than 80
percent will be used to go online and search the Web's more than 92
million gigabytes of data (comparable to a 2 billion-volume
encyclopedia). Getting online is the easy part, finding a useful Web
page is a bit harder—keeping track of a useful Web page is another
issue altogether.
People have devised many tricks—such as
sending e-mails to themselves or jotting on sticky notes—for keeping
track of Web pages, but William Jones and Harry Bruce at the
University of Washington's Information School and Susan Dumais of
Microsoft Research have found that often people don't use any of them
when it comes time to revisit a Web page. Instead, they rely on their
ability to find the Web page all over again.
Keeping Found Things Found on the Web
Keeping Found Things Found on the Web
01/28/2004 08:56 AMKeeping Found Things Found on the Web - A Research Project of
the Information School at the University of Washingtonhttp://kftf.isc
hool.washington.edu/projKFTF.asphttp://kftf
.ischool.washington.edu/publications.aspThe goal of
this study is to understand better the ways in which people manage
information for subsequent re-access and re-use. The study focuses on
the management of information found on the Word Wide Web. Follow-on
studies will look at similar problems and practices of personal
information management for other information types including email and
personal files (electronic and paper-based). The classic problem of
information retrieval, simply put, is to help people find the
relatively small number of things they are looking for (books,
articles, web pages, CDs, etc.) from a very large set of
possibilities. This classic problem has been studied in many
variations and has been addressed through a rich diversity of
information retrieval tools and techniques.
A follow-on
problem also exists which has received relatively less study: Once
found, how are things organized for re-access and re-use later on?
What can be done to avoid the need to repeat the entire search
process? We refer to this as the problem of Keeping Found Things
Found. The current study addresses this problem in the context of
World Wide Web use. The study focuses on use of the Web by managers,
researchers, librarians and other information specialists. But it is
expected that the results of the study will be relevant to most users
of the Web.
