09/01/2004 08:46 PMAP - As a Democratic keynoter at a Republican National Convention,
Sen. Zell Miller was to accuse leaders of his own party Wednesday
night of elevating partisan politics over national security and
planned to say Sen. John Kerry "wants to re-fight yesterday's war" at
a moment of peril for the country.

Texas Rep Makes Case Against His Own
Bill

Phil
King leads the charge against municipal network build-outs, but
undermines self again: King, in this Star-Telegram (Ft.
Worth) article, says that "he views most municipal Wi-Fi networks as a
ploy by cities to start for-profit businesses." But dozens of cities
are fighting his bill's language, which while revised remains broad
enough to fulfill its true purpose: eliminating private competition as
well as municipal competition for incumbent broadband providers.
The bill doesn't address the lack of broadband. Rather, it hands
monopoly and duopoly powers over to incumbents while reducing a host
of regulatory burdens that affect universal access to dial tone and
other resources.
Rep. King says, "No business should have to compete with public tax
dollars," King said. But it's not about that kind of competition. No
municipality should have to beg private corporations for the privilege
of having the basic services they need to survive. No municipality
should be barred from allowing private companies access to municipal
facilities in order to provide private competition.
If Austin's airport has its wireless network shut down as is possible
under the Texas bill, that only benefits the cellular carriers who are
allowed to continue operating their cell data networks within the
airport. It doesn't benefit air travelers, the city of Austin, or
business in Austin that view the airport's Wi-Fi network as a
competitive advantage.
If there's ever a case to be made for municipal self-determination
it's that so many municipalities view broadband networks (wireless or
otherwise) as vital components in their ability to serve the public
through police, fire, and emergency care and to make their communities
competitive for business. When Rep. King say he thinks that cities
want to turn broadband into a profit center, he just doesn't
understand what they're doing with the technology and how underserved
and overpriced most of his state is--or he's only listening to one
viewpoint: SBC's.

04/14/2005 02:25 AMI'm trying out blogtorrent on my server here, and my
first test file is a 12 minute clip from tonight's Dennis Miller show
with Harry Shearer, Xeni Jardin, and Mickey Kaus, as
they talked about blogging. I think all three were great though I
can barely stomach Dennis Miller these days.
Throughout the late 90's, I used to get HBO solely so I could see
the new Dennis Miller shows on every Friday night and I used to look
forward to watching them live. But then everything changed and his
sense of humor was replaced by anger, and his showed died soon after.
Oh well.

Judith Miller at UC Berkeley
Judith Miller at UC Berkeley
03/19/2005 03:02 AMDavid Pescovitz:
Last night at UC Berkeley, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Judith
Miller discussed journalism and democracy with investigative reporter
Lowe
ll Bergman (played by Al Pacino in The Insider). In a few weeks,
Miller may be behind bars for refusing to reveal confidential sources
relating to another reporter's
disclosure of a CIA operative's name. Before becoming a possible
martyr for the First Amendment though, Miller was known for penning
articles in the New York Times supporting claims that Saddam Hussein
had weapons of mass destruction. Whether Miller was tricked by her
sources (including members of the Bush administration) or, worse, in
cahoots with them is still not clear to her many critics. From
Bonnie Powell's coverage of the
Berkeley event:
Miller argues that if she was duped by her unnamed
sources, so was the Bush administration — and she's not
apologizing for believing there were WMDs in Iraq until the president
does. "I think I was given information by people who believed the
information they were giving the president," she told Bergman. "When
the president asked, you know, 'What about this WMD case? Are we sure
about this?' [then-CIA director] George Tenet said to him, 'Mr.
President, this is a slam dunk.' The people I talked to certainly
thought that." Other WMD believers, she said, included the entire U.S.
intelligence community as well as French, English, and Israeli
agencies. The debate, she claimed, was not over whether Saddam had
WMDs, but whether it was worth going to war over them...
Ultimately, Miller said, she "wrote the best assessment that I could
based on the information that I had." She attempted to tie the
controversy over her WMD reporting to her current struggle by saying
that she had heard after the fact — after she returned from
being embedded with an infantry division in Iraq — that there
had been people who had reservations about the WMD intelligence she
was receiving.
"I wish they had come forward at the time to express those
reservations," she said. "To me, this case that I am now involved in
emphasizes the importance of getting as many people as possible to
come forward with a dissenting view, or allegations of wrongdoing."

I'll be one of the guests on tonight's episode of CNBC's The Dennis

guests Mickey Kaus (of

genius
Harry Shearer (of
The Simpsons and KCRW's "Le Show"). We taped the program earlier
today, and talked about blogger's rights and the Apple v. Does case;
Al Gore's new TV network; and presidential iPods, among other things.
Image: mysterious
graffiti inside the closet in my dressing room today. I think I'm
lucky to have escaped alive -- the cryptic scrawl looks like a sekrit
cry for help for guests who may have been held there against their
will. Where are these former talk show hostages now? Did the Nutter Butters and Fig
Newtons in this basket do them in? Maybe things just got too
hot. On the opposite wall of this Closet of Doom, the words FRENCH
TWINS 04. A gang of disenfranchised AFTRA members? A pair of Parisian
porn princesses? A command from the other side? Don't know, but it
terrifies me.
