Video iPod? How Steve Jobs Can
Not Take Back His Words
08/27/2004 02:03 PMWhy is Apple looking for an engineer to work on
video
integration for the iPod, even after what Steve Jobs has said?
Here are some wild and crazy ideas...
1. Apple will pioneer a new
eyeglass add-on, where video will be piped to just one of the two
lens. Now, you
can watch video while exercising.
2. The
iPod will not only be able to record audio, but video too.
3.
Daddy and mommy can listen to jazz in the frontseat of their BMW,
while the kids can watch Barney in the backseat. From the same
iPod.
Do you have any
ideas beyond what
Microsoft is doing with its portable video player?

Bill Gates Claims Open Source Kills Jobs
07/12/2004 07:35 PMIn another futile attempt to sway companies away from Open Source
software, Gates proclaims that Open Source software costs jobs.
Understand that this is a random statement with no facts or figures to
back up his claim, Mr. Gates apparently figures that we will simply
take his word for it.
Well let’s also consider this, Mr. Gates. There are a number of
companies that are not only growing, but also turning a profit
utilizing their own branded version of Open Source software. Open does
not mean free, it means it is open to be reviewed, revised, and then
redistributed as the developer see fit within the constraints of the
GPL. Competition is a scary thing, huh, Bill? ;o)

The
Possibility of Spectrum as a Public Good. I find your faith in
technology disturbing. (e.g. Spread-spectrum does not "allow data
transfer rates to be much higher than the carrying capacity of
frequency considered as a virtual wire"; it actually does just the
opposite, which is why people are switching to non-spread-spectrum
technologies like OFDM as fast as they can.)

The FCC is considering opening up additional spectrum to unlicensed
uses -- the same kind of regulatory change that gave rise to
Wifi. Much of the spectrum being considered for unlicensed use is
currently allocated for broadcasters, however, so FCC's proposal
creates tension between incumbents and groups that want to take
advantage of the possibilities inherent in unlicensed spectrum.
Most issues the FCC deals with, even contentious ones like limits on
the ownership of radio and television stations, are changes within
regulatory schemes. The recent proposal to move the maximum media
market reach from 35% to 45% took the idea of an ownership cap itself
at face value, and involved a simple change of amount.
Unlicensed spectrum is different. In addition to all the regulatory
complexities, an enormous philosophical change is being
proposed. Transmuting spectrum from licensed to unlicensed changes
what spectrum
is. This change is possible because of advances
in the
engineering of wireless systems.
This matters, a lot, because with the spread of unlicensed wireless,
the FCC could live up to its mandate of managing spectrum on behalf of
the public, by allowing for and even encouraging engineering practices
that treat spectrum itself as a public good. - More at

Real
and France's Virgin claim that they deserve to be able to sell their
music on Apple's iPod. To prove they're serious, Virgin Mega has
filed a complaint against Apple to do so. Perhaps I'm missing
something here, but last I checked it wasn't anybody's responsibility
to open up their product or service to purposely allow the competition
in. That is, of course, unless the government steps in. Are Real and
Virgin Mega just being whiny little brats, angered that they're not
invited to the party? What are legitimate reasons for the legal system
to get involved and to rule in favor of such plaintiffs? While the
obvious Microsoft may come to mind, are there other examples you can
think of? As for me, I'd like to hand out copies of "Atlas

Microsoft asks nicely, “Apple, will

08/27/2004 02:05 PMMicrosoft, about to release their online digital music store (in
typical late-to-the-game form), has apparently asked Apple to open up
the iPod to songs purchased from their store. Yeah, they were
rejected, just like a certain other company in Washington State was;
looks like not even all their stock in Apple could get them to loosen
their stranglehold on the iPod. Not that they really have to or
anything, so are you really surprised? Could this mean that Microsoft
is going to ask that certain someone for advice on how to manage
proper iPod support?
