BT To Block Child Porn - But Who Makes
The List?

BT To Block Child Porn - But Who Makes
The List?
06/07/2004 02:39 AM
Lots of folks are talking about the decision by BT to b lock access to child porn and how this is the "first mass censorship of the web attempted in a Western democracy." Actually, that's not true at all. Pennsylvania has been forcing ISPs to do this for years. While most of the Guardian article above focuses on how it's now technically feasible to do so, it doesn't really get into the reasons why this is problematic. First, it's unclear who gets to make up the list, and how they decide what's "bad" and what's acceptable. The article mentions a list, but it's not clear that's the list that BT will use - or if there's any kind of appeal procedure for sites that have been unfairly blocked. It's also not clear if (as in Pennsylvania) blocking a site that's on a shared server will mean every other site on that server will also get blocked. The article talks up how this was an idea by NCH, the children's charity who has a habit of putting out very biased and very misleading studies trying to blame child porn on everyone but the people actually creating and hosting the child porn. This is yet another effort by them to try to hide away the problem, rather than dealing with its root causes.

From Wish List to Check List: Customer
Input Drives Microsoft Office OneNote
2003 Service Pack 1
04/20/2004 11:26 PM
In an academic setting, a score of 90 percent earns an automatic "A". By that measure, the team shaping Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 merits a similar high passing grade. When the innovative application debuted last October, it reflected the pioneering edge of the digital note-taking category. Today, Microsoft honed that edge by announcing the preview release of Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1 (OneNote SP1). Ninety percent of the features included in the software update are a direct result of customer input and feedback -- with the remaining 10 percent coming from indirect customer feedback.

This comes as quite a surprise, but the other day Steve Jobs told a group of financial analysts that Apple has no plans to sell Macs that could record TV shows like the new Media Center PCs that have been coming out:"We're not going to go that direction," Jobs said. "There is a small audience that likes this." Jobs said there are several problems with the Media Center concept, in particular the wide divergence in the way people want to watch television as compared with how they use a computer. "Generally what they want to view on television has to do with turning their mind off," he said. Jobs said that video recording is processor intensive and is best left to a device that is not doing other things such as playing games or running spreadsheets.
