Federal Government considering requiring

Federal Government considering requiring
ISP's to archive user activity
06/17/2005 03:50 PM

Let me get this straight you go online and every action you take while online is recorded, so that just in case your suspected of something in the future a government agency can come in with a search warrant, and ask for all the present and past log files from your ISP of your activities.

First of all the administrative burden on ISP's is going to be terrible, not to mention making the millions of Americans subject now to search, and seizure types of rules that smells very foul.

Here is the deal, the feds think your doing something bad they get a search warrant or a wiretap order, and collect info from that point forward or whatever they can take with them when they kick the doors in, and seize your data.

I have a word in my head I want to use, but being the feds are only thinking about it, and not acting upon it I will keep that word reserved for a later date. This really disturbs me. [CNET News]

Measuring Your Web Site Traffic

Measuring Your Web Site Traffic 12/24/2004 12:53 PM
Do you know who's visiting your site, where they come from, and how long they stay? If not, then you are designing and tweaking your site in the dark.

C kick Here to Learn How to Measure your traffic
"Regardless of the statistics package you use, whether it’s provided by your web host or one you download and run on your own computer, it’s vitally important that you learn how to read your site statistics, and do it regularly. Otherwise, you have no tools to gauge how well your site is performing, and how well you are promoting your site – whether links from other sites are actually sending you traffic, whether search engines are finding your most important pages, etc."

Site Traffic Re-Visited

Site Traffic Re-Visited 07/13/2004 12:29 PM

Here's a quick little graph showing how traffic has increased over the last eight months. Click the little image (or here) for a much larger version.

The trendline tells the story — we've solidly doubled page hits. And this is just to the HTML pages — God (and Webalizer) only know what's happening on the RSS feed.

The spikes you're seeing there are posts that got linked to from high-profile sites. The Bill Gates post got a link from Boing Boing a few months ago and then there was the Basecamp review that got linked by Kottke a few weeks back. I think the smaller spikes further to the left are a couple entri es that got linked from Scripting News.

The regular spikes you see are the difference between weekday and weekend traffic — proof that we're all reading when we should be working.

Every web site owner has wanted to drive additional traffic to their web site – and of course we’re all in a big hurry to do it. But have you ever thought about the fact that any webmaster can drive great qualified traffic to their site in less than one day? That’s right – you can literally set up an entire traffic driving campaign and see the traffic coming to your site even in the same day! Here’s how:

I saw this quick post over on Micro Persuasion and it just rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe in the "Blog Business World" reality it's true, but for most bloggers getting high traffic numbers really isn't why we're doing this. Sigh. I know that Steve is just writing to his audience, or at least the audience he'd like to have, but it still bugs me. A lot. Anyone want to guess how long it takes before weblogs suffer the same...

Merging Web Site Traffic Analysis
With... Sim City?

Merging Web Site Traffic Analysis
With... Sim City?
06/09/2004 10:35 AM
Dealing with large amounts of data is often difficult. For years, people have tried to come up with better graphical representations of data - which is why we see so many pie and bar charts all over the place. One developer has decided to go one step further in making website traffic analysis more visual. For anyone running a website, visitor traffic analysis often becomes something of an obsession. They want to see their stats, about who's visiting, how many people are visiting, where they're going and what they're doing on the site. Most web hosting companies offer up some very simple traffic analysis programs, but they usually don't let you dig too much into the information. There are a number of large "enterprise" level traffic analysis packages that are popular, as well as some cheaper ones that are pretty good themselves. However, they all produce the same sorts of charts and lists of data. Robert Savage thought that the data could be presented in a more intuitive way and creat ed an interface for web traffic analysis that looks more like Sim City than a traditional analysis package. The idea is that pages getting a lot of traffic look like large buildings, and people moving from one page to another hail taxi cabs, so you can see where they're going. Buses with their rooftops labeled show where people are arriving from (Google, Yahoo, etc.). The larger your website, the more it looks like a city than a small town. While it sounds (quite) gimmicky, people using it say it becomes addictive very quickly. Of course, it looks like the VisitorVille website can't take the traffic beating it must be getting - at posting time, all of its own images are broken.
