Fox News review of Fahrenheit 9/11: "a
film that members of all political
parties should see without fail"
06/16/2004 02:01 AM
Will wonders never cease. Roger Friedman reviewed Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" tonight on Fox News: a really brilliant piece of work, and a film that members of all political parties should see without fail. As much as some might try to marginalize this film as a screed against President George Bush, "F9/11" — as we saw last night — is a tribute to patriotism, to the American sense of duty — and at the same time a indictment of stupidity and avarice.... Before anyone's even seen it, there have been partisan debates over which way Moore may have spun this or that to get a desired effect. But, really, in the end, not seeing "F9/11" would be like allowing your First Amendment rights to be abrogated, no matter whether you're a Republican or a Democrat... On the other hand, there are more than enough moments that seemed to resonate with the huge Ziegfeld audience. The most indelible is Bush's reaction to hearing on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, that the first plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Bush was reading to a grade-school class in Florida at that moment. Instead of jumping up and leaving, he instead sat in front of the class, with an unfortunate look of confusion, for nearly 11 minutes. Moore obtained the footage from a teacher at the school who videotaped the morning program. There Bush sits, with no access to his advisers, while New York is being viciously attacked. I guarantee you that no one who sees this film forgets this episode. How times have changed. It seems like the establishment is finally wising up to Bush's incompetence. At least I hope so. Or maybe Friedman's body will be found floating in the river tomorrow. I hope not. Via Strangelove....

The Crescent Girls School in Singapore is bringing their students into a new era of technology with Tablet PCs. I think this is awesome and I wish that more schools had the resources to make this happen. To me, this is the start of a commitment by the Crescent Girls School to empower their students with knowledge and computer skills that will serve them well into adulthood….

This issue of Topic in Depth explores some of the resources available online regarding school finance. The first article from the RAND Review (1) discusses the challenges involved in meeting the ambitious goals established by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and the need to develop a school accountability system that can provide "the incentives and resources that the schools really need to help all students meet the state performance standards." In the second article (2), Linda Darling-Hammond, a Professor at Stanford University discusses the inequality of school funding across the US, again using California as an example. This website from CPRE (3) offers several articles that explain how school finance in the US works. The NCES Education Finance Statistics Center (4) is also a hub for information on public elementary/secondary education finance, including finance data on school districts nationwide. The Education Commission of the States (ECS) (5) offers this listing of state finance agencies for more state-specific information. Students can explore the topic further using this educational website from NCES (6). A collection of reports available through New American Schools (7) highlights one approach to the problem of school finance, namely resource reallocation. Taking yet another tactic, the author of this last article (8) proposes "a 'World Bank' for American education.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2005. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

Finance Spam Passing Drug Spam While
Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PM
The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.

Girls Vs. Boys: Girls Are Winning

Girls Vs. Boys: Girls Are Winning 09/07/2004 10:13 AM

This article in The Observer about the upcoming trend of girl gadgets happens to interview our buddies over at Shiny Shiny, which couldn't be a better choice, really. And by 'upcoming' I mean 'already eclipsed male spending,' at least in the US, with 14 percent more money being dropped last year by women than men.

Women are not so interested in how many megabytes it has, nor indeed whether it looks nice, just: "How well does it work?"

It's only when I buy something that ends up really sucking and languishing in the corner do I ever get the stern eye, which is how it should be.
