Alphalogix, Inc., a leading provider of software solutions and services for the connected enterprise, addresses the high cost of enterprise wide instant messaging deployment and management. With this in mind, Alphalogix developed the Versona Instant Messaging System (VIMS) which drastically lowers the cost of deploying and maintaining an instant messaging infrastructure without sacrifice to capabilities or features. This is made possible with the IM client streaming technology used by Alphalogix in the Versona Instant Messaging System. [PRWEB May 18, 2004]

Instant Messaging Mom And Dad

Instant Messaging Mom And Dad 01/03/2004 01:23 AM
My parents live more than 3,000 miles away from where I live, yet I'm in constant contact with them thanks to instant messaging software, which they started using nearly six years ago. It's amazing how much closer it's allowed us to remain as a family, despite the physical distance (though, my father has the somewhat disconcerting habit of waking up and logging in to the computer before I've gone to sleep the night before and starting up a conversation). It appears we're not the only family to bridge distance with such a solution. The NY Times is reporting that it's increasingly common for family members to stay in touch via instant messaging - even if they live in the same house. In some cases, it's made normally difficult parent-child communications easier, since many people are more comfortable expressing themselves through the written/typed word than the spoken word. Also, it gives a "built-in" pause in communication that often helps to stop people from saying something they'll regret, while also hiding any emotional facial response that could shut off conversation. So while some parents are complai ning that they can't get their kids offline, maybe they just need to log in on their own computer and start chatting with them.

How Americans Use Instant Messaging
http://www. pewinternet.org/report_display.asp?r=133

2004 Pew Internet & American Life surveys reveal that more than four in ten online Americans instant message (IM). That reflects about 53 million American adults who use instant messaging programs. About 11 million of them IM at work and they are becoming fond of its capacity to encourage productivity and interoffice cooperation. At the same time, IM usage varies widely across different age groups. Instant messengers utilize IM not only as a way to expand and remain connected their social circle, but also as a form of self-expression, through use of customized away messages, profiles and buddy icons. Instant messagers use the expressive tools of IM more frequently than the protective tools that allow them to block unwanted communications. Buddy list management also occurs relatively infrequently, with users reporting adding or deleting buddies from their list no more than a few times a month.

Instant Messaging Taking On More
Importance

Instant Messaging Taking On More
Importance
04/27/2004 11:42 AM
For all the talk of a battle over search and web-based email, not as many people have been paying attention to the growing battle over instant messaging services. Many people spend a lot of time each day in their IM programs - sometimes even more than their browser. Realizing this, Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL are all working to more closely integrate other aspects of their service into instant messaging. I'm still surprised that none of them have more actively turned their instant messaging program into a Friendster-like social networking service - since it seems like a much more natural fit than having to go into a website and list all your friends. With most IM services, you already have your list of friends and there's an actual practical use to it beyond surfing through friends of friends. The article also mentions (as we have before) the idea that Google should offer their own instant messaging client. Of course, the article brushes over the issue of interoperability, claiming that people haven't really been asking for it. That's not true. I've been asking for it for years, and know plenty of others who have as well. While the various services believe they need to stay as separate islands for the purposes of "lock-in," they're simply driving people away. I wouldn't need to use products like Trillian if Yahoo or AIM worked with each other. Just like text messaging on phones and email systems over a decade ago - once people decided to let them communicate across boundaries, they found that everyone did a lot more with them. It doesn't take people away, it makes them use the services more.

washingtonpost.com - If you're an avid instant messenger, you probably know what I mean: "Instant messaging doesn't work for me, does it work for you?" Yet I appear to be on the way to becoming a minority, a fuddy-dud resisting the text-chat party. Instant messaging, or IM, is catching on with adults in a big way as it moves rapidly into the workplace, according to recent surveys. In fact, analysts predict IM soon will overtake e-mail as the No. 1 form of electronic communication.
