A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

It turns out Honda thinks Asimo is a male and consistently refers to it as "he". The Roomba, on the other hand, is female according to the author. The article also mentions the Neiman Marcus his & her robots which included a male and female robot. There's a related Slashdot discussion.

All 17 different joints are powered by a single motor, and there is even software to pre-script the movements on your computer and play them back again and again. Probably a little out of most casual robotics fans' price range, but for those that really like contributing to our species' ultimate destruction, you know, on the side, the Wow Robot is a lot of cybernetic doom for not a lot of cash. Experimenting AI Lab Robot

Experimenting AI Lab Robot 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
Reuters says that British researchers have created a Robot Scientist that Conducts and Interprets Lab Tests The article says that the robot can formulate theories and do research and works as well as a grad student. (er, um, Did the robot verify that claim with a control subject / grad student?) They did say that there were no differences found between the lab results from the robot and from those gathered by grad students. But at least they do say the tasks they have given it were simple ones and that it's unlikely to put anyone out of a job. So basically, this robot harbinger of the future can take the grunt work out of doing lab experiments, allowing robots to yet again free the world from drudgery (that professors usually dump on grad students). One researcher says, " If you opened it up I think humans would have the advantage. We tend to be more flexible " If it really can figure out things for itself, the scientists may have invented themselves out of a job!

WFAA.com says that a Grand Prairie TX company Lockheed-Martin is creating a new military robot called the "Mule". This war robot will go where humans dare not go. The Mule come in various configurations from cargo, air assault, counter mine, to rapid fire battle weapon. The Mule can go into hostile urban areas and brave streams of bullets that humans could not endure. Mules could be dropped in by helicopter or by cargo plane. Its advanced suspension and nimble wheels allow it to climb over obstacles or go up stairs. It can even kneel to shield troops. It can see and shoot! Be afraid! This robot could change the way troops battle on the battlefield forever.

Robot librarian

Robot librarian 07/21/2004 11:20 AM
Researchers at Universitat Jaume I in Spain are designing a robot librarian of sorts. The three-wheeled bot listens for verbal book requests, heads to the approximate location of the title on a shelf, and uses digital cameras to read the spines. The toughest challenge is engineering a grasper with "fingernails" to pull out the book, Professor Angel del Pobil told the BBC:
"It is mimicking the way we manipulate our hands. We have constant feedback from tactile sensors, so it is moving very slowly. In the first experiments, the books really got damaged because it was pressing too hard. Now it touches gently."

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use 01/07/2004 01:56 PM
The US Army TACOM group is spending $2.25 million on research projects aimed at building robot dogs that can carry a soldier's field equipment and keep up with the soldier over any terrain. Right now, each man has to carry up to 100 pounds of ammunition, food, and equipment. The long term challenge is making a four legged robot that can move as fast and quietly as a man over any terrain. The immediate challenge is making a four legged robot big enough for the job that doesn't fall over and doesn't need an internal combustion engine for power. For more, see Noah Shachtman's interesting article on the program in Wired.

The Grand Flying Robot Challenge

The Grand Flying Robot Challenge 07/23/2004 03:08 PM
If you're sitting around waiting for the X-Prize contestants to blast into space looking for their millions of dollars, or the autonomous vehicles of DARPA's grand challenge to figure out how to travel more than 10 feet or so, there are always other similar "grand challenges" going on. Apparently going on for four years now, the International Aerial Robotics Competition was held yesterday to see if teams could create a robot that can "fly 3 miles, identify a building and enter it in less than 15 minutes." Once again, however, no team successfully finished the challenge. Each year, though, the prize goes up another $10,000. So, while no one won the $40,000 this year, next year the prize should be $50,000. Get to work.

War Flying

War Flying 07/16/2004 01:21 PM
Bob wants to put WiFi in the Sky. “So here’s my plan for really cheap aerial Internet service. I’m preparing a number of experiments using a Linksys WRT54GS 802.11g router mounted on the roof of my house in Charleston, SC. The router is running Sveasoft firmware that gives me direct control of transmitter power if needed. I’ll be testing it with a variety of antennas, mainly omnidirectional but perhaps I’ll try a sector antenna, too. The other end of the wireless connection will be a second WRT54GS mounted in my funky homebuilt airplane. Operating the pair of routers as an Ethernet-to-Ethernet bridge will give me much higher performance than I could ever expect from just using a WiFi card in my notebook computer. And I’ll be testing a variety of antennas on the belly of my funky airplane, too.”

Where's My Flying Car?

Where's My Flying Car? 11/17/2003 07:51 PM
It's been decades since people have suggested that everyone would have a flying car or a personal jetpack. There are any number of "flying" technologies that futurists expected to be commonplace by the new millennium, and here we are a few years in and we're still pretty firmly grounded. MSNBC is looking at seven "promised" flying technologies that still haven't come home - from flying cars to personal jetpacks to regular supersonic commercial air travel (bye bye Concorde) to space tourism. Some of these may come true eventually, but they've all been talked about for years, and we don't seem that much closer.

Clearly I'm not the only one wondering where all the cool stuff went - check out RetroFuture
