Jedi Council Screen Scene News 04/22/2004 10:39 AM

Amazon.com now has a listing for the upcoming Jedi Council Scene II (really 4th in the series.) Nothing we haven't reported on before, except that this set is due out on July 20th. They do have a nice clear picture though.

The Jedi High Council is in session in our Photo Archives today. Continuing the scene from last year's releases, this set features Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Ki-Adi-Mundi from The Phantom Menace, the third interlocking base and the first of the center floor pieces. Each figure has undergone some tweaking from its previous releases...just take a peek to see what Ki-Adi-Mundi is packing underneath his skirt.

The Jedi High Council continues its session in our Photo Archives today. Continuing the scene from last year's releases, this set features Plo Koon, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Eeth Koth from The Phantom Menace, the fourth interlocking base and the second of the center floor pieces. While Obi-Wan is the same figure from his Power of the Jedi release, both Plo Koon (based on the Saga version) and Eeth Koth (pretty much a new figure with the POTJ head, although really this figure should be Agen Kolar) have undergone significant changes.

One of the more popular items from last year was the series of Screen Scenes, specifically those from the Jedi Council. This year, they're back with four new sets, featuring characters from The Phantom Menace. The first two of the new sets have shown up on ebay, treating us to the first look at the centerpiece of the floor that completes the circle. Thanks to Scotty97 for the head's up.

In response to a question submitted by our very own Mark Hurray, The Hasbro site’s Q&A revealed today that the two remaining Toys “R” Us exclusive Jedi Councilthree packs will include the following: one set will include Stass Allie, Agen Kolar, and Shaak Ti, and the other set will offer Adi Gallia, young Anakin Skywalker, and Saesee Tiin. If you come from the school of ‘Walrus Man’ as apposed to the school of ‘Ponda Baba’, click the images above to put faces to names.

Jedi Council Boxed Photos 06/01/2004 12:02 PM
RoboChris comes through once again with new photos of the third and fourth Jedi High Council Screen Scenes, this time in the OTC style packaging (minus the OTC logo, of course). The third set includes Plo Koon, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Eeth Koth, and the fourth set includes Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Ki-Adi-Mundi. These characters imply these figures are based on their appearances in The Phantom Menace, although sharp-eyed fans will point out that several of the outfits are not movie-accurate. Sharp-eyed fans have also noted that the completed circle on the back (of which images first appeared recently) looks as if Eeth Koth and Adi Gallia appear in the council twice, although most likely this is Stass Allie and Agen Kolar, both seen in Attack of the Clones. Looks like Coleman Trebor will not appear in the Council after all...

Art scene and heard

Art scene and heard 07/07/2004 11:11 AM
Located in an historical Long Island elementary school building, P.S.1. Contemporary Art Center has been a hub of avant-garde art and culture for nearly three decades. Now, P.S.1. also has an Internet radio station. As you might expect, WPS1 features an eclectic mix of programming. No Clear Channel station is going to give you the voice of Marcel Duchamp, the techno of Todd Sines, and a discussion with Taipei City mayor Ma Yingjiu about public art. From this week's schedule:
11:30 am The Bio-Blurb Show, Edition #3: Bio-Art or Bio-Terror? - In this most provocative program, host Suzanne Anker speaks with former Whitney Museum director David Ross, art journalist Stephen Henry Madoff, and filmmaker Virgil Wong about the federal government's Patriot-Act case against the activist artist Ste ve Kurtz and the Critical Art Ensemble and the criminalization of the American artist in general. Must-hear listening!

12:00 noon Love Crazy, Edition #4 - Whazzup workaholics! For this session of her music series for WPS1, chanteuse Nora York zeroes in on how much we love our labors, especially when they're lost to song.

1:00 pm Curbside Cassette, Edition #3 - Okay, work's covered. How about school? Recent high-school grads Joe Ahearn and Max Kagan celebrate their diplomas with a science-and-math music mix. Indeed, where would we be without "Calculus Man"? Without the Beastie Boys, for one thing, joined here by Mos Def, Sun Ra, Elvis Costello, the Pixies, White Stripes and more.

power tower

« A full moon hangs over the power tower in Töölö. I've always thought this building has a striking visual effect since the signs are all the same colour, which is unusual, but they converge on adjacent sides of the building. Maybe it's only because I usually see the building when I'm drunk and snarfing food from the Jaskan Grilli across the street. »

Otava kept us up most of the night as his itchy-scratchy condition reached critical mass. The HU Vet Clinic couldn't give him an appointment for two weeks so we had to find someone who would see him ASAP. I spent my afternoon at the vet and dragging my ass to the pet store for a new giant bag of food and to the pharmacy for some medications. First we try a medicated shampoo and topical pesticide in case it is caused by microscopic mites, otherwise we will have to start hunting down the allergen which could be a long, tedious process. But, for now, he's sleeping comfortably without itching and whining which is a major improvement for us all.

While I was waiting in the pharmacy, I was looking at the cute doggie lunchbox that the pet shop gave to me for buying the giant bag of food which opens into two bowls with a water bottle and a food compartment when some nice old guy sat down next to me and started chatting me up about how a metal one would be better and such. I was so tired that I just smiled and nodded since I don't think I could have made conversation even in English. The pharmacy downtown is straight out of a scene from the movie Brazil with the cascades of pneumatic tubes that transport fresh drugs from the basement up to the awaiting customers.

Sean Burke made my evening last night when he pointed out one of the best reads I've had in a while: Dab blers and Blowhards. Even if you're not a geek or one of the incestuous digerati who will find this cutting a little too close to the bone if they read carefully it's a fun read. I remember distinctly when my bullshit-o-meter pegged on 11 when Tim O'Reilly and bunch of others as OSCON one year were starting to go on about how programmers were really artists and could be funded by patrons of the art of programming, etc. I imagine we were drunk, possibly stoned, and still it seemed like an incredibly pretentious way to put a good face on dot.bomb unemployment. The downside of the essay is that we are reminded of ESR's treatise on oral sex for geeks at the end. Hurrr.

Remembering the BBS Scene

Remembering the BBS Scene 04/02/2005 04:07 PM
Ah, those were the days. As now, it was a healthy mix of academics, techies, conspiracy theorists and trolls. Jason Scott has a great website chock full of old BBS textfiles, with no advertising. What does his collection include? Well, it's a lot like K5 if you ask me, but maybe a little more naive. There are some ugly things down in these archives; there are narcissistic ravings from pre-adolescent social misfits. There are calls for anarchy. There's satanism, there's racism, there's all the -isms in the book lurking in the words. But there's hope, too. There's excitement, there's joy, there's every manner of feeling being crammed down into ASCII and posted for the world to find. It's a spectrum of humanity, and this is what I hope you'll find, buried there, among the text. Enjoy. Jason Scott Proprietor, TEXTFILES.COM
