Jon Udell's been paying a lot of attention recently to categorizing XHTML elements. Two of his readers suggested that he use the class attribute, delimiting the categories (if necessary) with spaces; this is also valid CSS. I'm in favor of it as well, as it has worked well for me in two other circumstances. At del.icio.us/crysflame, I keep a notebook of interesting links. Each link has several pieces of metadata; of interest is the tags field. The content of this field is a space-delimited list of categories, so to speak; a blog post about Google's IPO would be assigned "blog business", while a paper about graphing social dynamics would get "science social math". It's worked out very well for me, so far; I can find things easily enough by selecting individual tags, though more complex slices of the data aren't...

Dare Obasanjo reports that MSN Spaces now supports "one-click subscription" via the feed URI scheme (aka: "feed :// protocol"). According to Mike Torres:

"Clicking on the orange RSS button or the "Syndicate" link above will no longer spit out raw XML to your readers using a modern browser. Instead, they will see a "pretty printed" RSS feed with a link to learn more, subscribe in My MSN, or subscribe in an aggregator supporting one-click subscription (feed://)."

In other words, readers of any of the 4.5 million MSN Spaces blogs can now simply click a feed link to subscribe to the feed in FeedDemon, NetNewsWire, NewsGator, Shrook, RSS Bandit, NewzCrawler, Sharpreader or any other RSS reader which support the feed URI scheme. Very nice!

No reason has been given, but apparently, Google has dropped Merrill Lynch from their list of underwriters which included every single major Wall Street underwriting firm, except Bear Stearns. Makes you wonder what Merrill did to upset the Google-ites. Even Goldman Sachs, who famously pissed off the Google crew and lost their spot as the lead made it to the overall syndicate. Of course, the alternate explanation is that Merrill may be making a stand and could have opted out on their own if they believe the fees they'll get won't make taking part worthwhile.

Today's big bombshell: Priv ate Jessica Lynch reports that she was raped. But here's the kicker. In the biography, she confesses that she has no memory of the incident. The citation comes from "medical records." But even author Rick Bragg notes that the records "do not tell whether her captors assaulted her almost lifeless, broken body after she was lifted from the wreckage, or if they assaulted her and then broke her bones into splinters until she was almost dead." Serious allegations against her captors or trumped up charges that fail to pinpoint the perpetrator? (It's also worth noting that Bragg was suspended from the New York Times when he relied on the work of stringers and interns. Is it possible that a similar approach was utilized with these medical records?)
